We Tried Sound Bath Healing at I'M Hotel: Here’s What We Think
Living in Manila is a challenge in itself – the traffic, noise, pollution, trash, need we say more? In fact, according to a 2021 study, Metro Manila is the 3rd most stressful city in the world with a stress score of 95.15. We know us Asians pride ourselves in getting high scores, but in this unique case, we can do better. With a stress score like that, it’s no wonder wellness is at the top of everyone’s minds. Enter: Tibetan singing bowls.
Sound Bath Healing is a practice that’s been making waves in the wellness community. But before you dismiss it as another new-age fad, let’s look at what the research tells us. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine found that sound meditation can significantly reduce tension, anger, fatigue, and depression. Another 2020 study in the Complementary Therapies in Medicine journal suggests that singing bowls can decrease distress and anxiety, while improving your blood pressure and heart rate.
So when we heard about I’M Hotel’s “Soundscape at I’M Hotel” package, we were more than intrigued. Could this be the stress-relief solution we’ve been seeking?
Soundscape Package at I’M Hotel
Nestled in the heart of Makati City, I’M Hotel with its famous spa, “I’M Onsen,” is an oasis amidst the urban chaos. In partnership with V432 Wellness, the hotel offers a unique retreat that promises to rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit. Starting at P6,500 for a Classic Studio room, the “Soundscape” package includes a 60- to 90-minute sound bath session with guided meditation, overnight stay, and complimentary access to their I’M Onsen Spa Wellness (with an onsen pool, sauna, and steam room), pool, fitness center, and Antidote rooftop bar.
As we checked in and got ready for the sound healing session, we couldn’t help but get nervous. Is there a wrong way to relax? And is it even possible to completely relax? Our friendly meditation guides – Jose “Isla” Antinero and Tonette Asprer – quickly put us at ease, explaining how they’ll guide us through every step of the way.
Isla, a professional musician with a classical background from the UP College of Music, is not just a master of the trombone but also a Reiki Master and Sound Healing Teacher Trainer.
Tonette is a Sound Healer, Reiki Master-Teacher, Certified Yoga and Meditation. She graduated from the UP College of Music, majoring in Percussion.
Both Isla and Tonette studied Tibetan Singing Bowl Therapy and Sound Healing under Grand Master Shree Krishna Shahi in Nepal.
Our Sound Healing Experience
As we entered the intimate space in the I’M Onsen building, we were struck by how cozy it felt. The small and dim room had individual mattresses on the floor, complete with pillows and blankets. In an instant, we were put in a relaxing atmosphere that almost dared us to try to focus on our worries. Each session can accommodate up to 8 people, ensuring each person is paid attention to throughout the experience.
Tonette's energy was infectious as she opened the session. "Sometimes we don't realize how much tension we're holding in one part of our body until someone else points out that we need to relax it and release the tension," she explained. And she was right – we hadn't realized how much stress we were carrying on our shoulders until she told us to let it go.
She began by gently guiding us to relax every part of our body, from our toes to the top of our heads. It was surprising how much tension we were holding in places we didn’t even know could be tense. Our facial muscles, for example, felt like they were finally allowed to take a break from their constant state of “resting…stress…face.”
"We all have so many worries, so much stress," Tonette continued. "But now, for the next hour, the only thing you have to focus on is to relax." It was like she had given us permission to hit the pause button on life, and it felt good.
As the session continued, we found our minds wandering to our to-do list, errands, deadlines, bills, and the occasional embarrassing moment that we hoped would fade from our memories. But Tonette's gentle coaching brought us back to the present. "When that happens, just tell your mind: 'Thank you for bringing that up or for reminding me but please come back later,'" she advised. It was like politely asking our anxiety to take a number and wait their turn.
Music and vibrations from the Tibetan singing bowls filled the space as Isla and Tonette both worked their bowls from opposite ends of the room. They moved around the room, playing various instruments – singing bowls, chimes, and more. From deep notes that seemed to reach your bones to high, tinkling noises that zapped your brain into focus, the music seemed to resonate with our entire system.
It was as if the stress was shaken out of us – our breathing slowed, our muscles relaxed, and our minds were clearer than ever. For the first time in forever, we weren’t thinking about anything else other than the present moment. The musical vibrations seemed to massage our brains, our souls – as weird as that sounds.
As the session drew to a close, we felt a sense of calm that we hadn’t felt in ages. It was like taking a vacation from your own mind – and we needed it. The 90 minutes flew by and yet, paradoxically, it felt like we were there for hours, and in a good way.
Tonette led a brief discussion after the session, allowing the participants to share their experiences. It was fascinating to hear how each person had a unique journey – some felt like they were in a dreamless sleep, others felt like floating, and a few dozed off (but they said it’s completely normal and snoring is totally acceptable!).
I’M Onsen Spa: Metro Manila’s Relaxation Haven
After the sound healing session, it was time to experience the I'M Onsen Spa. As the first sento-style spa in the Philippines, it is well worth a visit. As we entered the gender-specific wellness areas, we were greeted by two onsen pools, sauna, herbal steam room, and rain showers. It was like stepping into a modern Japanese bathhouse.
We were provided our own yukata (Japanese bathrobe), rubber slippers, towel, and locker key. Inside, you can take a shower before slipping on your robe and heading over to their amenities. As the star of the spa, we immediately made our way to the onsen pools. Using state-of-the-art technology, they mimic the chemical composition of natural hot spring waters in Japan. The water types rotate, featuring seasonal "flavors," each with unique health and beauty benefits. The green wall surrounding the pools adds to the natural ambiance, making you feel one with nature despite being in the middle of the city.
Next up was the Finnish wood sauna. We’ve always been fans of saunas, but this one took them to the next level. The dry heat filled the room, increasing our metabolism and blood circulation. We could practically hear our muscles sigh in relief. The sauna can comfortably fit about six to eight people, but during our visit, we had it all to ourselves – pure bliss!
Last, but definitely not least, we stepped into their steam room. Infused with a combination of seven herbs and pure essential oils, it was like walking into a fragrant – albeit hot – cloud. The steam room promised to detoxify, beautify, and aid in weight loss. Not sure about the weight loss, but we did feel a tad lighter upon leaving. Naysayers would say it’s a placebo effect, but we beg to differ.
Now, how do you maximize all of these experiences? First, take a quick shower to clean your body. Then the recommended circuit is to spend about 10 to 15 minutes each in the sauna and steam room (for first timers, however, you should test them out for 5 to 10 minutes to start). Afterwards, take a cold shower and take a dip in the onsen pools. Repeat this as you see fit, but make sure to stay hydrated – there are water stations conveniently located around the spa!
Can't get enough? I’M Onsen Spa offers a host of spa treatments from massages, to body scrubs, curated baths, and facials. Massages start at P2,000 per person for a 60-minutes, and they offer add-ons for an Afternoon Tea package, Dinner Buffet at TCG, or Multi-Course Meal at M Osteria. You can also avail additional services such as a Hot Oil Hair Treatment, foot spa/reflexology, and massages that cater to specific pain points or parts of the body.
If you prefer to have a more private wellness experience, they also offer a variety of Couple Suites: with access to the Steam Room (P2,500), Jacuzzi (P3,500), Steam Room and Jacuzzi (P4,000), and Private Onsen (P4,500). These private suites come with two massage beds and refreshments (tea, juice, and water). For those seeking a romantic and luxurious spa experience, a Couple Suite is well worth it. View their full menu, including couple and party packages here.
After what felt like ages in relaxation heaven, we retreated to the lounge with its La-Z-Boy chairs and unlimited ginger tea or juice. It was the perfect way to cap off the experience, sipping ginger tea as we stared into the Makati buildings beyond the glass windows.

- You are required to be fully nude in the onsen pools. While it may be awkward in the beginning, the tension will soon fade when you dip into the relaxing pools.
