July 21, 2023
Levi's recently announced the launch of their first 501 jeans made with 97 percent plant-based materials, signifying the industry's shift towards reducing synthetic materials derived from fossil fuels and promoting renewable resources.
These jeans are made from 100 percent OCS-certified organically grown cotton and utilize plant-based indigo dye from Stony Creek Colors. Levi's has invested in producing 100 percent bio-based indigo, thus underscoring their commitment to sustainable practices.
Apart from using plant-based materials, Levi's has incorporated other eco-friendly components into their 501 jeans. The internal pocket bag is crafted from 100 percent cotton and printed with BioBlack TX, a plant-based black pigment derived from wood waste.

Levi's aims to continually improve its design practices and conserve environmental resources. Una Murphy, Levi's Director of Design Innovation, underlined the brand's commitment to incorporating sustainable innovations across its product line.
“By incorporating sustainable innovation, both in our mainline and premium products, we can learn what’s possible and how we can continue working towards solving some of our biggest challenges,” stated Una Murphy, Levi's Director of Design Innovation.
Levi's persistent commitment to sustainable practices and product innovation reflects its drive to challenge conventional denim manufacturing and embrace the principles of a circular economy. By demonstrating what's achievable today, the company aims to surpass these accomplishments in the future and consistently enhance its sustainability efforts.
