Stay at Home and Watch These Movies by Filipino Filmmakers for Free

Cabin fever is definitely real in these times, and while we say "hard same" with your urges to go out and see friends and loved ones, we also know that ensuring the safety of one another is greater than all these whims combined.
As Delta cases continue to rise in the country, staying at home to avoid being infected by and being carriers of COVID-19 should be our topmost concern. For now, find a cozy spot at home and check out these seven movies by Filipino filmmakers, if you haven't yet. No subscriptions required.
Sunday Beauty Queen (2016)
First up on our list is a documentary by Baby Ruth Villarama. "Sunday Beauty Queen," released in 2016, follows the lives of Filipinas in Hong Kong who work as domestic helpers. You'll witness their hurts as they strive for a living in a foreign country in anonymity, but also their joys in the friendships they nurture along the way.
TBA Studios has uploaded “Sunday Beauty Queen” for free on YouTube, along with a ton of other movies. Remember to have tissues on hand!
Bliss (2017)
If you're a fan of psychological thrillers, then you'll love Jerrold Tarog's "Bliss," which stars Iza Calzado as the main lead. It follows the story of Jane Ciego (Calzado), who gets involved in an accident during the production of her own film. While Calzado is impeccable on camera, we argue that Adrienne Vergara's the real star of this movie. But we won't spoil why. “Bliss” is free to watch on YouTube
K’na, the Dreamweaver (2014)
"K'na, the Dreamweaver" is a gorgeous film by Ida Del Mundo. It tells the story of K'na (Mara Lopez), a young T'boli princess who is caught between following her heart and the duties expected of her as the village dreamweaver. Watch “K’na, the Dreamweaver” on Youtube.
Smaller and Smaller Circles (2017)
Raya Martin's adaptation of F.H. Batacan's book is a gritty mystery involving two Jesuit priests, played by Nonie Buencamino and Sid Lucero, as they try to solve the murders of young boys in the Payatas slums. If forensics is your thing, then don't miss "Smaller and Smaller Circles" on YouTube.
Heneral Luna (2015)
Historical biopic film "Heneral Luna" became widely popular when it burst into the scene in 2015. Jerrold Tarog's masterful reimagining of General Antonio Luna (John Arcilla) during the Philippine-American War made history popular among the younger generations and gave rise to the quotable (and we say, classic) line, "Bayan o sarili?"
“Heneral Luna” is available on Netflix, but we know not everyone has a subscription. Watch it for free on YouTube instead.
Die Beautiful (2016)
Jun Lana's LGBTQ+ dramedy "Die Beautiful" will make you laugh and cry as you witness the death and journey of transgender woman Trisha (Paolo Ballesteros) in realizing her dream of becoming a winner of a gay beauty pageant. Her loved ones must now take it upon their shoulders to carry out Trisha's fervent wish, which is to be made up as a different celebrity on every night of her wake.
“Die Beautiful” is available for free on iflix.
Women of the Weeping River (2016)
Sheron Dayoc's drama film "Women of the Weeping River" has nabbed multiple awards here and abroad since its release in 2016. Set in Jolo, Sulu, and shot in the Tausug language, the film follows two women in a remote Muslim community as they take it upon themselves to undo a longstanding blood feud and its cycle of violence.
Albeit a heavy film, we urge you to watch "Women of the Weeping River," which is free on YouTube.
