Interior design student and singer-songwriter Tala was blessed with an environment that nurtured her passion for music. Her parents, who owned a studio that catered to film, advertising, and music, introduced her to the world of entertainment during her formative years.
Oblivious to the fact that her songs would soon make waves in the local music scene, she wrote her debut single “nothing personal” in her bedroom with friends. The dreamy pop track eventually landed a spot on Spotify Philippines Viral Top 50 list.
Following the success of her first song, Tala went on to release a variety of catchy tunes such as “ain’t leavin’ you,” “control,” and “lucky!,” among others. Her consistent music drops caught the attention of Taiwanese artist Jinbo, resulting in a collaboration between the two. Together, they crafted “Over the Sea,” an upbeat song that explores the complexities of long-distance relationships.

Presently, Tala has more than 52,000 monthly listeners on the platform, serving as a clear indication that her name will twinkle even more.
In an exclusive interview with The Beat Asia, Tala talks about her songwriting process, her love for Phoebe Bridgers, and her newly dropped EP “honeymoon.”
Hi, Tala! Can you tell us how you got into music?
My parents, who are musicians, owned a recording studio that serviced the advertising, film, and music industry. I spent a lot of time in a natural music environment. As I got older, I gravitated towards people who share the same interests as I do. I can’t really say when I got into music because that was the life we knew, and I am fortunate to have grown up in an environment where creative expression was encouraged.
How was writing your first song like?
My first attempt at more “serious” songwriting was in high school. I saw my peers performing their own compositions — some of them had a musical background, and some didn’t, but they were dedicated to honing their skills, which encouraged me to do the same. My first compositions were far from a finished product, but that’s where I learned that there is a creative process involved that can be very satisfying.
Your debut single “nothing personal” charted on Spotify’s Philippines Viral Top 50 songs. How does it feel that many people gravitate to your music?
I am so grateful for that! Things fell into place through the efforts of so many. I came into this industry and charting was the farthest thing from my 18-year-old mind. I was so happy that people were listening to a song I wrote in my bedroom with my friends. I don’t think I’ve lost that excitement even six years after. I write things about my personal experiences and when people find that relatable, it propels me and keeps me creating.

Can you tell us about “Over the Sea” and how it came about?
Jinbo reached out to me through Instagram after hearing my song “lucky!” on Spotify radio. He wanted to collaborate, so we did — completely online. We even shot a music video, brilliantly conceptualized by Jinbo’s team. It was exciting to collaborate coming from two different countries, especially since the song is about a long-distance relationship, which made the whole concept feel more authentic. It’s written about tender affection, looking forward to the day they will meet up again.
Who are the artists you look up to and why?
I am inspired by so many local and international artists! I can’t name them all, but I’m particularly drawn to singer-songwriters — lyrics have a different impact on me. I just recently flew to Singapore to watch Phoebe Bridgers because I’ve been a fan of her work for years!
What achievements are you most proud of since getting into music?
Releasing my music is something I’ve been proud of. There’s a sense of vulnerability when you put your feelings out there, but when someone connects to it, it feels amazing. Another thing I’m grateful for is when musicians I look up to give my music a nod of approval. It’s so cool to hear that someone you admire likes your stuff. And even better when you get the chance to collaborate with them! Of course, there’s nothing quite like performing live and seeing people sing along to songs you’ve written. The energy can’t be explained.

Any advice for people who want to pursue music?
Start! You have to start somewhere. Be teachable and be open to other possibilities in order to get the best version of your music out there. Be consistent with wanting to learn and improve. Write from your heart. Have a vision that is unique to you. Be collaborative. Believe in yourself and in what you are creating. And remember, it's okay not to know everything - nobody does!
If given the opportunity to collaborate with or open a show for a specific artist, who would it be and why?
I love this question. I used to be asked this a lot, and my answer was always the producer, crwn. Now, we work together! But I’m always open to collaborating with anyone if the energy is good. Since you asked, the 2023 lineup for Washington DC’s “All Things Go” festival was just released, and I admire the work of every single artist on it. It would be a dream to be able to perform alongside them.
What’s next for Tala?
A lot of very exciting things! I recently signed with Pool Records, and I have just released my “honeymoon” EP produced by crwn. It’s composed of three love letters in the form of songs. This project is very special to me, and I hope people support it.
