This February, the Foreign Correspondents Club (FCC) is hosting a different kind of exhibition on its Hugh van Es Wall. In the place of on the ground photojournalism, the FCC has decided to display social media memes in it’s first-ever meme-centric exhibition: ‘Meme the News’.
The exhibition will feature six of Hong Kong’s best meme curators and creators, including Chaotic Hong Kong Expats, Hongkonggag, hkmehmeh, Hong Kong Memes, Surreal HK, and Victor Chen Art.
Through the pandemic years, Hong Kong became an all-too-easy farm for memes, helping many of us see humour in trickier times. Sat with our devices in hand, we are met with new and creative ways that capture the essence of ‘Hong Kong’ while scrolling endlessly.
In a world saturated with internet culture and memes, their meanings have become an integral part of news commentary and public discourse. It’s no surprise that memes are the news for most of the digital audience.
According to the Reuters Institute Digital News Report of 2022, “Users in many Asian countries now prefer to use social media to access news, reducing the connection with news brands.”
As part of the exhibition, guests are invited to look back on the memes that have graced their Instagram feeds that helped them make sense of what was going on around them – creating levity and a feeling of togetherness through tough times.
Showcasing memes from 2019 to 2022 during unprecedented changes in the city, the memes range from macabre hamster culling jokes to life in Penny’s Bay. ‘Meme the News’ undoubtedly resonates with many of us, connecting with each of us in our niche context of life in Hong Kong.
When: 10 AM - 12 PM, 3PM – 5:30 PM Daily, Now until Feb. 28.
Where: Foreign Correspondents Club, 2 Lower Albert Road, Central, Hong Kong
