Located in the West Kowloon District of Hong Kong, the M+ Museum measures 17,000 square-metres of exhibition space featuring 33 galleries with more than 1,500 works and displays.
Without further ado, here are six thematic exhibitions in the opening of the M+ Museum that you shouldn’t miss!
Hong Kong: Here and Beyond – Nov. 12-27
The exhibit highlights the social and cultural transformation of Hong Kong from the 1960s post-war era up to the modern day. The dynamism of the city will be shown through individual and collective histories of ground-breaking artists, architects, designers, and filmmakers.
This project will take place at the Main Hall Gallery, featuring the works of Greg Girard (Kowloon Walled City—Children on Rooftop), Rocco Yim (Hollywood Terrace), Sandy Choi (Poster), and Tsang Tsou-choi (Untitled, Partial Map of Kowloon).
M+ Sigg Collection: From Revolution to Globalisation – Nov. 12-Oct 7, 2022
The Sigg Galleries will showcase the social and economic changes relative to Chinese art from the 1970s to the present. The artists aim to converse how these practices changed the lives of millions of people through art. Some highlighted objects on display during the exhibit are the following:
- Wrestling: One and One Hundred by He Yunchang
- The Second State by Geng Jianyi
- Six Small Turntables by Huang Yong Ping
- River of Light by Feng Guodong
Things, Spaces, Interactions – Nov.12, 2021-May 21, 2023
If you’re into Asia’s design and architecture, visit the East Galleries of M+ Museum and behold more than 500 works of furniture, architecture, graphic arts, and other design objects.
Things, Spaces, and Interactions is about the relevant things we use, the place we live in, and the way we interact with the world. This exhibition presents Peter Cook’s architectural drawing and design objects like the Toshiba Automatic Rice Cooker (1955), Hannan Chair Long (1984), and the Kiyotomo sushi bar (1988).
Individuals, Networks, Expressions – Nov.12, 2021-Feb 5, 2023
This is another historical-themed event that tells artists' experiences and artwork stories since the 1950s. Through visual arts, the exhibit will bring to light Asia’s identities and define histories in cultural, social, and geopolitical contexts.
Some of the masterpieces you must see are the lifeworks of Tehching Hsieh, Cheng Wei Kuong, Patty Chang, Lee Mingwei, and Michael Lin.
Antony Gormley: Asian Field – Nov. 12, 2021 – Jul. 3, 2022
Antony Gormley is a British artist who launched the Asian Field installation that comprises hand-sized figurines made of clay, moulded with two eyes, that can stand.
Gormley’s monumental works are one of the must-see exhibitions during the M+ Museum opening. The installation will include figurines produced from Australia, North and South America, the United Kingdom, and Europe.
The concept of the Asian Field mirrors the extensive territory and population of China. The exhibit will also present the works of photographer Zhang Hai’er.
The Dream of the Museum – Nov. 12, 2021- Sept.18, 2022
Together with 27 other artists, the pioneers of this exhibition (Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Yoko Ono, and Nam June Paik) present the development of Conceptual Art. With this artistic practice, the artists interpreted how the world of the M+ Museum and its collection can take us to amazing discoveries.
