Women are prone to harassment when commuting especially during peak hours. To provide a safe and comfortable space for them, Rapid KL launched a women’s coach trial on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Kajang line in September last year – and now they have extended the special coach to the MRT Putrajaya line last April 8.

According to Rapid KL’s Facebook post, the Women’s Coach is located in the middle section of the trains, taking up parts of coaches two and three. For those who might be a little confused, there will be pink markings and stickers on the station platforms and doors to help identify them.

In a report by The Star, Rapid Rail Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Amir Hamdan said that the special area can accommodate 300 to 400 female passengers on each journey. Women of all ages can take advantage of the Women’s Coach, but boys aged 12 and under with accompanying female passengers can also ride the said wagon. The Women’s Coach also gives priority to the PWD community, ensuring an easy journey for them.

You might be wondering, what about women with families, partners, or groups? Either they ride the common carriages with their male family members, or they board separately – male friends or family (except those aged 12 and below) take the common coaches while women take the special one.

Taking the successful initiative of several cities like New Delhi, Jakarta, Dubai, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico City, Rapid KL aims to provide the same convenience to the women of Malaysia. For more information, follow their Facebook page.
