'Mula Sa Buwan' Returns Onstage with a New Director and a New Perspective

The beauty of a multi-faceted story comes from the personal discoveries of every viewer. “Mula sa Buwan,” a play inspired by Edmond Rostand’s “Cyrano de Bergerac” weaves theme upon theme: love, friendship, and war. As the production transports its audience to Manila in the wartime era of the 1940s, viewers are introduced to three protagonists: Cyrano (Myke Salomon), Roxane (Gab Pangilinan), and Christian (MC Dela Cruz), all of whom are entangled in a love triangle to remember.
Though the play has been adapted to fit the Filipino narrative, what remains of the original is the same: the agonizing despair of unrequited love – and Cyrano’s beloved, if somewhat hyperbolic, nose.
“As with any story, you have to journey through the narrative to find what’s most meaningful to you,” shared Pat Valera, the man behind the book and adaptation of “Mula sa Buwan.”
“I find most meaning in the idea of fighting for truth, self, and country as seen in how Cyrano tries to navigate his life, which ultimately leads him to fight for or dream of a better country.”
While the initial intention of the play wasn’t to be political, the playwright does acknowledge that everything tends to take on a more meaningful lens that way. However, he does clarify that the play simply wishes to impart its own story.
“I guess that’s what’s nice about ‘Mula sa Buwan,'" mused Pat. “It offers a lot of themes, pathways, and narratives but it’s all blended and centered around the idea of unrequited love.”
Gab and Myke, who reprise the role of the play’s leading characters, mention that working on “Mula sa Buwan” is like a “big reunion” of theatre enthusiasts. Of course that doesn’t mean it’s all peaches and cream.
The importance of telling a story must never be underestimated, and plenty of research is involved in order to bring such historical characters to life. “It’s part of an actor’s job to go heavy on the research,” shared Gab. “For ‘Mula sa Buwan’ especially, it’s a story that marries both fact and fiction, but we make it a point to ground it in truth, guided by the vision of our director.”

In fact, one wouldn’t find it strange to catch the cast going through backstories and character sketches together during rehearsals. “In theatre, we always find new ways to discover,” said Pat. So even though “Mula sa Buwan” had already been staged in 2022, the 2024 production is as much of a challenge – and an experience – as the previous performance.
“As with any production, if you change the director, the vision can change,” explained Gab. While before, Pat had been an omnipresent force in guiding the production, this year’s run sees a new director, Mikko Angeles, step in those shoes.
“Interestingly enough, the text or the music of this year’s production didn’t change – but since it’s coming from a new perspective [from our director Mikko Angeles], there are [some] certain new discoveries that we’ve made along the way,” Gab added.

Fortunately, Pat and Mikko share a fabulous professional relationship. And as Pat put it, “It’s easy to give [the play] to someone you trust, but it’s more exciting to give it to someone who can challenge you.”
While “Mula sa Buwan” has always centered itself around the concepts of love and defiance, the August premiere sees the story tap more into the facet of “defiance.”
“But at the same time, we also realized as we were exploring that we can only dive deeper into defiance if the love also runs deep,” shared Gab. And as the passion of its cast and crew can attest, there is plenty of love both on and off the stage. The only task then, is for us to witness it.
"Mula sa Buwan" will run from Aug. 16 to Sept. 8, 2024, at the Samsung Performing Arts Theatre in Makati. Tickets are available here.

The upcoming staging of "Mula Sa Buwan" brings together a talented ensemble of both familiar faces and fresh talent. Leading the cast are Myke Salomon, Gab Pangilinan, and MC Dela Cruz, reprising their roles as Cyrano, Roxane, and Christian respectively. Many actors from the 2022 run are making their return, including Phi Palmos as Rosanna, Jillian Ita-as as Gabriel, and a group of beloved cadets: Rapah Manalo (Rosario), Khalil Tambio (Limon), Jep Go (Gimo), and Ericka Peralejo (Carissa).
The ensemble sees the return of Chesko Rodriguez (Filemon), Mikaela Regis (Dalisay), Liway Perez (Maila), Ace Polias (Miguel), Keith Sumbi (Felizidad), and Lance Reblando (Serafina). Adding new energy to the 2024 run are Jerom Canlas as Tato, Omar Uddin as Maestro, and Brian Sy as Maximo. The cast is also joined by new ensemble members: Ade Valenzona, Daniel Wesley, Jannah Baniasia, Cheska Quimno, Dippy Arceo, Iya Villanueva, and Jules Dela Paz.
Ensuring the show can go on no matter what, Paw Castillo stands by as Cyrano's alternate, while Teetin Villanueva serves as both Roxane's standby and the female swing. Rofe Villarino rounds out the understudies as the male swing.
Behind the scenes, a skilled creative team brings "Mula sa Buwan" to life. Mikko Angeles takes the helm as Director, working alongside Musical Director Myke Salomon (who pulls double duty as the lead actor). The production's visual elements are in the capable hands of Ohm David (Set Designer), Meliton Roxas Jr. (Lighting Designer), and Bonsai Cielo (Costume Designer), while JM Cabling crafts the show's movements as Choreographer.
