It’s a BINIverse: Walking Down BINI’s Milestone Lane
P-Pop (Pinoy Pop) has been around for a long time, and although it hasn’t reached the same level of popularity as its international counterparts like K-Pop and Western music, it’s clear to see that it has risen to incredible heights in recent years with the likes of SB19, Alamat, and 1ST.ONE who are reinventing the genre one pop hit at a time.
And let’s not forget the cherry on top — the eight girls dubbed as the “nation’s girl group,” BINI, who is solidifying their place among the Philippines' most beloved pop artists. From their boppy pop anthems such as “Pantropiko” and “Lagi” to their noteworthy fashion looks, BINI Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena are the epitome of pop stars.
With their Grand BINIverse concert only a few days away and after having just celebrated their third anniversary, we figured it’s a good time to look back on the group’s rise to fame and how they made their way into our summer playlists.
2019: Star Hunt Academy
BINI’s humble beginnings began in 2018 at Star Hunt Academy (SHA), a project by media conglomerate ABS-CBN Entertainment where they train aspiring idol groups. The eight members were among hundreds of girls screened by talent managers led by Director Lauren Dyogi looking to form the next big idol group.
Following the auditions, they underwent a series of rigorous boot camps for over three years under the supervision of Filipino and Korean coaches including professional vocal coach and former chair of the Department of Voice, Music, Theatre, and Dance at the University of the Philippines, Kitchy Molina. They took singing, dance and performance arts classes while also being nurtured physically with fitness sessions, as well as mentally and emotionally with regular counseling.
Much like what their supporters are called, the members of BINI were seeded and nurtured till they bloomed into pop stars. Out of the 250 hopefuls, it was cut down to 50 and further narrowed down to twelve. From the twelve trainees, only eight flowers were picked. True-blue “Blooms” know how much hard work these girls went through to reach their dreams, which has become an inspiration to many.
2019-2020: Pre-Debut as SHA Trainees
Their first appearance took place on the online pre-show of the reality show, Pinoy Big Brother Otso, where they were collectively introduced as SHA trainees. Two members, Sheena and Gwen, were also previously teen housemates on the show.
This was followed by their first-ever mall show in Taguig on Aug. 15, 2019, and their attendance at a National Youth Convention event where they were named youth ambassadors. Additionally, the group also participated in the 2019 Manila Southeast Asian Games Thanksgiving event.
In October 2020, Director Lauren uploaded a YouTube video introducing the final lineup of BINI, while also sharing stories of how each member made it into the cut and their qualities that stood out in the entire process.
BINI continued to make appearances and participated in various events like the Philippine K-Pop Convention's Happy Hallyu Day 4 where they covered popular K-Pop songs like Blackpink's "How You Like That” and TWICE's "More & More."
In November, BINI was all set to wow the crowds with their talent and charm as they released their pre-debut single, “Da Coconut Nut.” This was followed by their first live performance on the noontime show, “It’s Showtime!”
2021: Debut
BINI made their official debut on Jun. 11 which was marked by the release of the official music video of their first single, “Born To Win,” which was released the previous week on Jun. 4 — the same day they made an appearance on “The Runway” where they strutted down the catwalk in gorgeous outfits crafted by Filipino designer, Francis Libiran.
The first live performance of their debut single took place at the Miss Universe Philippines coronation night stage on Sept. 30. BINI made waves in the music scene with this song when the music video received more than 200,000 views in its first 24 hours, making it the fastest among debut MVs from a P-Pop group.
Their first album of the same name dropped on Oct. 15 and immediately rose to the charts, topping the iTunes Album Charts in the Philippines, Thailand, and Hong Kong.
2022: Collaborations and New Album Launch
On Jul. 22, BINI collaborated with Coca Cola for the sixth season of Coke Studio Philippines. The season’s theme was Coke Fan Fusion, which allowed fans to collaborate with their favorite artists. BINI co-wrote “Love Yourself” with one of their Blooms, which was released on Sept. 7.
The rising P-Pop group was only getting started it seemed because, in the same month, they released their comeback album “Feel Good” with the lead single “Lagi.” This marked the beginning of BINI’s bubblegum pop era, which they pursued in later singles.
Later in the year, they took the stage with the internationally renowned P-Pop group, SB19, at the PBB Kumunity and performed songs from their sophomore album at the Global Peace Festival in Clark, Pampanga.
2023: Rising to New Heights with “Talaarawan”
BINI’s popularity skyrocketed the following year with the release of their first extended play (EP), “Talaarawan” in March which launched six tracks including their mega hits “Pantropiko” and “Karera.” The former trended on social media as millions of online users jumped in on the “Pantropiko” dance challenge while the latter became a popular song choice for graduation ceremonies.
By the end of the month, “Pantropiko” catapulted BINI to the top, becoming the number one P-Pop group in the country with over three million monthly Spotify listeners.
The group also collaborated with Hip-hop group PLAYERTWO for the seventh season of Coke Studio on Oct. 23 and performed a reimagined rendition of “Bata, Kaya Mo.”
2024: Expanding their Brand Portfolio and Grand BINIverse Concerts
BINI continues to make themselves known as a force to be reckoned with this year, making them ideal role models and coveted ambassadors for various brands. The group represented brands left and right earlier this year including popular ones like Modess, Ponds, Shopee, Penshoppe, and Filipino fast-food giant Jollibee where they reimagined “Pantropiko” into a catchy Cheesy Yum Burger jingle.
In May, Star Music announced via social media that BINI was set to cross oceans to see their overseas Blooms for their much-awaited North America tour.
The following month on Jun. 28, the group held their first major solo concert at the New Frontier Theatre. Not only was this a career milestone for the group, but also a celebration of their third anniversary in the industry. Tickets were sold in mere minutes, which led to management adding two more dates, serving as a heartfelt gift for their devoted Blooms.
Also in June, BINI performed hit songs during the Star Magic All-Star Games halftime show. BINI Mikha also participated in the games as part of the Volleyball lineup.
On Jul. 27, BINI made P-Pop history when they performed at KCON LA 2024, the world’s largest K-Pop fan and artist festival. The group captivated audiences at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles with their latest single “Cherry on Top” for the pre-show of the popular M Countdown Stage.
Following the success of their three-day concert, BINI announced on Aug. 11 their biggest event yet: The “Grand BINIVerse” concert at the Araneta Coliseum happening on Nov. 16 and 17, 2024. Blooms were in a frenzy on the day of general ticket sales when Star Music announced that it would not push through as tickets were already sold out during the pre-sale for fans and BINI club members, which you can sign up for via their official website. Ticket prices ranged from P1,387 for General Admission to P11,195 for VIPs.
Apart from concert tickets, fans can also purchase various artist merchandise on the website, like hoodies, stickers, and pillows. Pulp Spaces+ also unveiled their official light stick in October; a fan essential designed exclusively for Blooms and inspired by the Sampaguita flower.
