Hello, Love, Goodbye (2019)

Location: Hong Kong

Set within “Asia’s World City,” this romantic drama follows the story of a Filipino domestic helper and a bartender in Hong Kong and gives a beautiful yet heart-wrenching depiction of the daily life experiences and struggles of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers). More than a romance between two people, this film also touches on issues surrounding family and self-love.

"Hello, Love, Goodbye" starred two of the biggest names in Philippine showbiz: Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards, and was the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time until early this year when it was dethroned by the movie, “Rewind.”

Some iconic locations featured in the film include Victoria Harbor, Quarry Bay Monster Building, and the overlooking view atop the Lion Rock Hiking Trail.

Under Parallel Skies (2024)

Location: Hong Kong

With massive shopping malls, soaring skyscrapers, and exquisite culinary and nightlife experiences, Hong Kong offers an eclectic mix of attractions you wouldn’t want to miss, which is why we’re featuring another film set in its bustling city streets to get you to book that plane and experience it firsthand!

In “Under Parallel Skies,” Filipina showbiz darling Janella Salvador and Thai actor Win Metawin team up to tell the stories of Iris, a Filipino hotel receptionist, and Parin, a Thai bachelor on a quest to find his mother in Hong Kong. It’s a story about navigating love and heartbreak, understanding cultural differences, and healing from one’s past set within the confines of a city known to bring cultures together.

Some key locations featured in the film include both of Hong Kong’s more popular tourist destinations such as the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui, and underrated gems like Tai O Fishing Village.

Suddenly it’s Magic (2012)

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Joey (Erich Gonzales) and Marcus (Mario Maurer) have two things in common. One, they both make fairytale romances happen through their work: Joey through her exquisite wedding cake creations and Marcus by starring in romance movies. The other thing they have in common is that despite their jobs, they are both unlucky in love and lack the fairytale endings they desire. So, what happens when this small-town baker crosses paths with the Thai movie star? Instant magic, of course!

Another Filipino-Thai collaboration, “Suddenly It’s Magic” will definitely tickle your hearts as it gives you a glimpse into the colorful city of Bangkok from its bustling metropolis to its awe-inspiring temples.

My Ex and Whys (2017)

Location: Seoul, South Korea

Starring one of the country’s most popular love teams, this romantic comedy slash drama about second chances follows the story of blogger Cali (Liza Soberano) and her ex-boyfriend Gio (Enrique Gil) who broke her heart due to his womanizing ways. Throughout "My Ex and Whys," Gio tries to convince Cali that he is a changed man, while Cali tries to resist his charms and tests him. This causes issues within their friend group and forces them to face unresolved conflicts.

With the rising popularity of K-pop and K-dramas in the Philippines, it’s no surprise that South Korea is among the top destination spots of many Filipinos and this film will only encourage you to finally plan that trip! From the enchanting Ginkgo trees of Nami Island to the delicious street food and exciting shops lining Myeongdong Street, this film gives you a glimpse of what you can expect on a trip to Seoul.

Kita Kita (2017)

Location: Sapporo, Japan

An unusual but heartwarming story about a Filipino tour guide in Sapporo who becomes blind after getting her heart broken, and her kind neighbor who visits her every day to cheer her up. Between these visits, Lea (Alessandra de Rossi) and Tonyo’s (Empoy Marquez) love blooms slowly, the way cherry blossoms flail gently against spring winds. “Kita Kita (I See You)" was a box office success during its run in 2017 and is the highest-grossing Philippine independent film to date.

“Kita” in Japanese means North, which is apt considering the movie was filmed in Sapporo, the capital city of Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido. With snowy cityscapes, quaint harbor towns, and gorgeous Shinto shrines, Japan’s northernmost prefecture offers all that and more and deserves a spot on your travel bucket list. Some popular spots featured in the film include Odori Park, Sapporo Fushimi Inari Shrine, and Otaru Canal.

Imagine You and Me (2016)

Location: Verona, Italy

Set in Italy’s “City of Love,” this 2016 feature film is about a hardworking Filipina caregiver (Maine Mendoza) who strongly believes in love and fate — and the young, handsome medical student (Alden Richards) she coincidently crosses paths with who believes in the exact opposite. Can the bubbly idealist and brooding cynic fall in love?

If you’re surrounded by romantic cobbled streets, sprawling vineyards, and stunning lake views? Anything is possible! If anything, "Imagine You and Me" is proof.

Looking to travel to Europe? Italy might just be the place for you! Be captivated by awe-inspiring destinations such as Casa Julieta (Juliet’s House), the medieval building believed to be the Capulet family’s dwelling, and the charming Lake Como.

Meet Me in St. Gallen (2016)

Location: Switzerland

This romantic drama follows the story of an aspiring painter and a frustrated musician who form an instant connection only to end up going their separate ways. Years later, they meet at St. Gallen but as completely different people. Starring Carlo Aquino and Bella Padilla, this film is brimming with true-to-life experiences and life lessons that will surely tug at your heartstrings.

Switzerland needs no introduction as a premier destination, perfect for travelers looking for adventure or simply a place to slow down and enjoy picturesque views. "Meet Me in St. Gallen" was shot in the titular location, a city situated in northeastern part of Switzerland, and features landmarks such as the St. Gallen Cathedral, Three Ponds, and the seasonal St. Gallen Christmas Market. After watching this film, you just might want to start planning for your next holiday. *wink*
