In celebration of the holiday season, Ballet Philippines, the company behind the haunting restaging of “La Sylphide,” brought ballet lovers a sprinkle of joy and holiday cheer with their own version of the classic tale of “Peter Pan” for its 55th season.
Held at The Theatre at Solaire from Dec. 6 to 8, the adaptation breathed new life into J. M. Barrie’s timeless tale with a brand-new libretto, music, choreography, a talented pool of dancers, and the creative flair of artistic director Mikhail Martynyuk. Find out how “Peter Pan” brought “faith, trust, and a little bit of pixie dust” to ballet lovers over the magical weekend.
‘Peter Pan:’ A Journey to Neverland

Penned by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie, “Peter Pan” tells the adventures of the titular character, the boy who never grows up. Peter Pan, along with his sidekick and best friend, the sweet and enchanting fairy Tinker Bell, and his gang, the Lost Boys, go on all sorts of quests, including battling his archenemy, the wicked pirate Captain Hook.
In an effort to retrieve his lost shadow in the Darling household, he and Tinker Bell encounter Wendy, daughter of George and Mary Darling, and his brothers John and Michael. He then invites Wendy to Neverland to mother the Lost Boys and tell them stories. Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, and the Darling Siblings set out for a journey to Neverland, where they meet various mythical characters, such as the mermaids of the Mermaid Lagoon, the Indian princess Tiger Lily, and Tick-Tock the Crocodile.
A Youthful Retelling
As a gift to families and children this holiday season, Ballet Philippine’s rendition offered a lighthearted portrayal of the classic tale. Themes of innocence and joy shone throughout the whole show, with its libretto putting the spotlight on the cheerful adventures of Peter Pan and the gang, coupled with moments sprinkled with comedy.

Speaking of comedy, the show was nothing short of amusing with the appearance of Tick-Tock the Crocodile, who, despite being a menacing character in the original play (and the Disney animation we all know and love), gave a breath of fresh air with his comical dance and connection with the audiences.
Another standout of the night was Jemima Reyes, as her portrayal of Wendy sparked joy in our hearts with her everlasting smile and charm that perfectly matched the character’s loving and nurturing qualities. Similarly, Richard Capongcol’s Peter Pan was a delight to watch, not only because of his graceful movements but also his infectious energy and charisma.
Classical Ballet at Its Finest
True to Ballet Philippines’ distinct elegant flair, “Peter Pan” offered a masterclass of classical ballet. With a full-blown classical form, the show mesmerized us with its enchanting choreography, flawless en pointe, and precise movements.
The dancers' routines, which perfectly captured the respective characters’ essence, were also impressive: Peter Pan’s buoyant and playful steps, Tinker Bell’s sharp and perky performance, and Captain Hook’s mischievous and theatrical approach to the role.

We were particularly enchanted with the pas de deux by Peter Pan and Wendy, which showcased their heart-fluttering chemistry and pristine technique. The mermaids’ performance at the Mermaid Lagoon scene also had our eyes yearning for more with the dancers’ splendid synchronization, accentuated by the dancers’ colorful outfits and the stage’s majestic lighting.
If there was something we wished could have been more thrilling and featured a more intense choreography, it is Peter Pan’s final battle with Captain Hook, which offered more comedic relief than a dramatic clash.
Bringing Neverland to Life
There’s nothing like witnessing a fairytale in person – and Ballet Philippines’ ‘Peter Pan’ gave us just that! The show truly brought Neverland to the Solaire stage, featuring elaborate stage set-ups for the story’s various settings: from Darling’s humble home to the magical islands surrounding Neverland. Kudos to the production team, who put immense effort into making intricate backdrops and realistic props to make the show even more magical.
The characters’ costumes, designed by Eleanora Martynyuk, are also worthy of praise. Not only do they give a proper nod to the character’s original fits, but they also seem to be something straight out of a fairytale — particularly Wendy’s magical blue dress, which elegantly flows along with Reyes’ movements, Tinker Bell’s green attire that sparkled under the lights, and Captain Hook’s detailed outfit that matched his larger-than-life persona.

Overall Thoughts
Ballet Philippines’ “Peter Pan” was an enjoyable performance, taking us back to the joy of childhood with its comical storytelling and its lighthearted approach to the beloved tale. Truly the perfect holiday offering for families, kids, and ballet enthusiasts alike.
