Upcoming Wetland Habitat at Bay East Garden Will Feature More Mangroves
Mangroves are more than just trees and shrubs; they are essential to protecting shorelines from erosion and storm damage, while also sequestering carbon dioxide and providing a habitat for marine life.
Recognising their importance, Gardens by the Bay has announced plans to plant more mangroves in a 5,148-square-metre wetland habitat at Bay East Garden, which is set to open in 2027.
This development was inspired by a study conducted at Kingfisher Wetlands, a nature attraction at Gardens by the Bay that opened in 2021. The study not only identified mangrove species that can survive in freshwater conditions but also revealed the carbon storage ability of mangroves that increases over time.
Visitors to Kingfisher Wetlands and the upcoming Bay East Garden will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of mangroves and discover the diverse range of marine life they support. Gardens by the Bay also plans to involve locals in planting the mangroves at Bay East Garden, fostering a sense of community and environmental stewardship.
