The Beat Bangkok's Up-and-Coming Artist: Thai Indie Band Television off

Thai Indie Band Television off Talks Music Collabs More

The vibrant Land of Smiles is not only known for its majestic tourist destinations but also for its exciting entertainment scene. Who doesn’t get spooked over their horror films or feel all fuzzy over their BL series? And with numerous T-Pop artists popping up and making their names known to many, there’s no denying that Thai music has also been on the rise in recent years.

Making their way into the genre is Television off, an indie pop band hailing from local music label Smallroom. Composed of Chok, Lap, Boat, and First, the four-piece act started making music just to “be cool.” This motivation, albeit simple, pushes them to create tracks that can spark curiosity in music lovers.

Fresh off the release of their new song, “do you?” featuring Korean indie band Lacuna, The Beat Asia had a quick chat with the band to talk about the collaboration, their beginnings, and upcoming activities. Check out the interview below!

Who is Television off? What's the story behind the band's name?

We are a four-piece pop band from [music label] Smallroom Bangkok. There is no particular story behind our band name. We just wanted something that sounded cool, and then we thought of “Radiohead,” and then the word “television” came up. We added “off” to have a little bit more.

How did the members come together to form a team?

Chok and Lap are twin brothers, and Boat is an old-school friend. We all met First in a bar where Lap used to work. We just clicked and started Television off.

How did each of you get into music? What sparked your interest in the craft?

Simply put, we just wanted to be cool!

Can you describe Television off's music to those who haven't heard of your songs yet?

We think there are no better explanations than our music. Please have a listen and let us know what you think!

Let's take a look at your creative process. How do you usually make your songs, and where or how do you get inspiration for them?

Of late, our creative process comes from jamming in the studio. We just get together and start something.

Congratulations on the release of your collaboration with the Korean band Lacuna! Can you tell us what "Do You?" is all about?

Thank you! The song is about when things are almost good, but [they] get stuck somewhere, and no one knows how to move forward.

How was it working with Lacuna?

This is our first time collaborating with other bands. There were some language barriers, but Lacuna is so talented, so everything went extremely well.

What do you guys love the most about being musicians?

Free beer.

What can you say has been your most significant achievement since your debut?

Our songs are sung by others.

If you could collaborate with other artists, locally or internationally, who would they be?

Jimi Hendrix.

What's next for Television off? Any gigs or new music we should watch out for?

We have an album coming out at the end of this year. Please stay tuned for that. Also, we are playing at "MPMG Music Festival: Vision Bangkok." Lacuna and other Korean indie bands will also be there.
