My Boo

Runtime: 2h 5m

IMDb: 6.5/10

In this captivating offbeat romantic-horror tale, Joe, a dedicated gamer, skillfully transforms his grandmother's haunted house into a thriving business, despite it being inhabited by three ghosts. As he strives to rid the house of its spectral residents, Joe cleverly devises a plan to incorporate the ghosts into a scheme that will make the haunted house profitable. Despite the significant barriers between the human and ghostly realms, Joe unexpectedly finds himself falling in love with one of the ghosts.

Directed by Khomkrit Treewimol, this movie offers a light-hearted blend of romance, comedy, and supernatural elements, creating an exciting new take on the rom-com horror subgenre – and a perfect watch for fans of quirky love stories. Filled with spine-tingling horror as Joe exploits the haunted house and its spine-chilling secrets, and peppered with humor as the fearless challengers find themselves screaming their way out of the attraction, it's a rollercoaster of emotions. And amidst all this, the enchanting chemistry between Anong and Joe steals the hearts of the audience.

The movie has the makings of a classic, packed with non-stop punchlines, thrilling jumpscares, and delightfully cheesy romantic scenes. Each character, from Joe to the three ghosts, brings a unique and colorful energy that truly spices up the humor. Despite being a horror-comedy, the love story between Joe and Anong delves into emotional depth, conveying a beautiful message of acceptance and boundless love. While the film excels in its humor and heartwarming moments, it lacks intense horror elements, so there is definitely room for improvement in terms of its plot.

Haunted Universities 3

Loading...

Runtime: 1h 59m

IMDb: 6.1/10

In one of the stories, a chilling legend from a northern university tells of a tragic love story. Koi, a college student, feels anxious about competing with her friend Hongtae for the last scholarship. To help her, Hongtae suggests visiting the shrine of Chao Nang, a goddess who blesses lovers but punishes insincere ones with death.

The third installment of the "Haunted Universities" series keeps up the tradition of entwining spine-tingling tales within the sacred grounds of a Thai university. There are three different stories of haunting events in Thailand’s universities — Jao Nang, Phee Take, and The Invisible Shrine. What sets this movie apart from other horror films is its skillful incorporation of folklore, particularly the exploration of the traditional Thai ritual "Ban Bai Sri," which adds an authentic layer of spookiness to the storytelling. This meticulous attention to cultural nuances not only roots the film in reality but also intensifies the feeling of dread that lingers in every scene.

Additionally, the movie brilliantly mixes fright with lighthearted moments, an unexpected combination of horror and humor adding a fun twist. It takes a comedic turn, allowing the audience to share laughs between eerie scenes. What’s more, the talented ensemble cast featuring actors like Chutavuth Pattarakampol and Eisaya Hosuwan, brings a diverse range of characters to life, each with their own chilling story.

"Haunted University 3" effectively blends atmospheric storytelling with traditional horror techniques set against a distinct Thai backdrop. This film showcases the lasting appeal of horror rooted in local culture and folklore, providing a fresh perspective on the genre. It demonstrates that horror can be both spine-chilling and enjoyable, ensuring a memorable experience for fans of horror comedy.

The Cursed Land

Loading...

Runtime: 2h 8m

IMDb: 5.9/10

After the heartbreaking loss of his wife, Mit, portrayed by Ananda Everingham, grapples with post-traumatic stress disorder. He is compelled to move to a dilapidated mansion in a Muslim-majority suburb of Bangkok with his teenage daughter May. Despite warnings from the locals, Mit decides to remove the talismans in the house, unwittingly unleashing a vengeful djinn and its 200-year-old curse. Meanwhile, the film introduces Heem, played by Malaysian actor Bront Palarae, renowned for his roles in popular Indonesian horrors who is seen trapped in Islamic black magic, adding an element of enigma and terror to the storyline.

Breaking new ground in Thai horror, "The Cursed Land" boldly departs from the traditional Buddhist cosmology that has long dominated the genre. This innovative film challenges preconceived notions and introduces audiences to a world of demonic entities and Thai Muslim identity. By skillfully interweaving Thai horror with Islamic Thai culture, the filmmakers have ventured into relatively unexplored territory, captivating horror enthusiasts. Following in the footsteps of "The Djinn’s Curse," the film sheds light on the rarely explored aspects of Thailand’s southernmost Muslim-majority provinces.

Both films feature footage from the historically troubled Narathiwat province, which has been affected by separatist unrest since 1948. Directors Panu Aree and Kong Rithdee, both Thai Muslims, set out to challenge stereotypes and oversimplified portrayals of their community in the media. Having previously collaborated on successful documentaries, they have now ventured into the horror genre to create Thailand's first-ever Islamic horror film.

The filmmakers skillfully intertwine a captivating narrative of supernatural occurrences, shedding light on the cultural and political tensions within Thai society. After making its debut in Europe, the film is poised to challenge Thai audiences’ preconceptions of ghosts, introducing the intriguing concept of Djinn from Islamic lore. Although the pace of the film may feel a bit slow at times, it ultimately captures the audience's attention with its fascinating concept.

Terror Tuesday: Extreme

Runtime: 39 to 47 mins per episode (8 episodes)

IMDb: 5.8/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 80%

This Netflix series is a chilling collection of true haunting stories that is inspired by the famous "Angkhan Khlumpong (Terror Tuesday)" radio show. This horror anthology series consists of eight episodes directed by eight different filmmakers, each promising extreme terror and unexpected fear, infused with drama, thriller, and horror.

Terror Tuesday stands out as one of the most captivating Thai horror anthology series that is binge-worthy. If you’re a fan of this genre, it will remind you of TV series like "Two Sentence Horror Stories" and "Creepshow."

This anthology series delves into the depths of the human mind, offering a captivating exploration of fear in its various forms. Across eight compelling episodes, it taps into culturally-rooted horror narratives, breathing new life into familiar tropes like cursed objects and haunted spaces. Far from a mere scare-fest, the series delves into the complexities of human relationships, trauma, and psychological struggles, offering a thought-provoking and bold take on the darker aspects of the human experience.

One of the standout episodes is the first one, "Our Little Sister," which follows a young woman named Aye as she copes with the grief of her sister's passing and discovers that her mother has adopted a doll with a life of its own. This pilot episode is filled with jump scares and creepy moments, making it one of the most thrilling episodes as it uncovers Aye's ongoing struggle with PTSD. Meanwhile, episode 4, "The Vow," delves into the themes of honesty and the repercussions of broken promises. Additionally, episode 8, "Viral Curse," captivates with its chilling narrative that portrays the delicate balance between ambition and temptation.

The duration of each episode is perfectly calibrated to keep viewers eagerly anticipating the unfolding of events. While the plots may lean towards the minimalist side, the genuine scares and eerie atmosphere are truly unsettling. The show's ability to blend emotional depth with classic horror elements offers a fresh and captivating experience for both avid fans of the genre and those in search of spine-tingling thrills.

“The Bootleg Show” at MOCA Bangkok

In the realm of art toy production, Thai-Hong Kong artist MRKREME (Worakan Jonghtanapipat) unearthed a fascinating disparity between his original art toy designs and their factory-produced counterparts.  This observation raises the question: “What is originality, and who is defining it?

When MRKREME first brought the character "Mushkin" to life — a whimsical furry monster — unexpected distortions during manufacturing altered his original vision. This intriguing experience ignited a deep curiosity about the essence of originality, especially since Mushkin stands as one of the central figures in the artist's body of work.

As a result, The Bootleg Show by MRKREME features pieces that reinterpret Mushkin through the memories and perspectives of others. It includes paintings, sculptures, and videos that encourage viewers to reconsider the idea that imperfection can serve as a starting point for creativity.

Location: Atrium and Temporary Exhibition Rooms 1, 2, and 3 (G Floor), Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA BANGKOK), 499 Kamphaengphet 6 Road, Ladyao, Chatuchak, Bangkok 10900

“Glass Plate Negatives: Circles of Centres” at BACC

If you're intrigued by history, you'll want to check out a remarkable exhibition featuring glass plate photographs curated by the National Archives of Thailand. Step back in time to the majestic reign of King Chulalongkorn of Siam, a period that weaves together the threads of ancient philosophy and political discourse, illuminating the complexities of a world in transformation.

"Circles of Centres" documents a unique period in Siamese history through the lens of Roland Barthes. Here, you will be transported into the multifaceted life of the King — not only amidst the bustling streets of Bangkok but also during his adventurous travels across mainland Southeast Asia, from the serene landscapes of Prachuab Khiri Khan to the vibrant shores of Songkhla, and further south to the Sultanates, such as Terengganu, and beyond.

“Folded Corners” at River City Bangkok

“Folded Corners” at River City Bangkok
Facebook/River City Bangkok

There’s something unspoken about folded corners. “Folded Corners” is a pop-up exhibition curated by River Art Gallery in collaboration with River City Bangkok, featuring Taiwanese-Canadian artist Yi-Shuan Lee and Taiwanese artist Ray Han. This exhibition serves as an informal marker, existing in the liminal space between privacy and public display — subtle yet powerfully directing attention to ideas that demand to be noticed, revealing layers of meaning that are yet to be fully unraveled.

In this showcase, Yi-Shuan Lee makes a bold intervention in the canvas space with whimsical cartoon-style lines, emphasizing brushstrokes and linear forms that articulate the tension between suppression and desire. At first glance, the delicate black outlines may appear light, but these images resonate with the profound anxiety of a younger generation, caught between the expectations of previous generations and fragmentary cultural influences.

Location: Room 248 – 249, 2nd Floor, River City Bangkok, 23 Soi Charoen Krung 24, Talat Noi, Samphanthawong, Bangkok 10100

The transition from childhood to adulthood transforms everything. In our youth, play was our greatest joy — a universal language that allowed us to explore and understand the world. Whether we were molding clay or doodling around, each moment of play unlocked new dimensions of our reality and ourselves. Yet, as we grow older, we often find ourselves closing the door on these possibilities, becoming trapped in familiar routines. We start to fear mistakes and overthink how others perceive us, leading us to forget how to fully embrace life. This art exhibition by Udom Taephanich, which is not-so-playful, is a way to reconnect with your inner explorer that once fueled your curiosity.

Location: 8th floor, The Pinnacle Hall, ICONSIAM, 299 Charoen Nakhon Rd, Khlong Ton Sai, Khlong San, Bangkok 10600

Date: June 7 to Aug. 3, 2025

Step Into The Bootleg Show by Thai-Hong Kong Artist Mrkreme
Bootleg Photo by MOCA Museum of Contemporary Art/Facebook

Step into the quirky world of 'The Bootleg Show An Exploration of Originals and Alterations," a mind-bending solo exhibition by Thai-Hong Kong artist Mrkreme, now running at MOCA Bangkok until June 29, 2025.

This is not your typical art show. Driven by the question, "What does it mean to be original?" get ready to be immersed in an interactive experience that'll spark ideas on imperfection, reinterpretation, and transformation — core themes of the show.

The adventure kicks off with a massive furry monster Mushkin, standing 30 mushrooms tall (measured by MOCA), welcoming you into a world where the bizarre reigns supreme. Mushkin is the star of this show – a whimsical art toy concept gone wonderfully awry. What started as a simple prototype that went wrong morphed into a deeper examination of originality.

But that’s just the beginning, each room holds more surprises in Mrkreme’s signature pop-surrealist style. Mrkreme uses clay in his works, the very material that sparked his art toy journey, alongside trippy acrylic paintings, to bring his vision to life.

The fun, interactive elements of the exhibition make it a must-visit. Mrkreme challenges you to become a co-creator by sketching Mushkin from memory. Your drawings will then be reimagined and transformed into new artworks in a fusion of paintings, sculptures, and even video installations.

Get lost in the weirdness and let your creativity flow at the one-of-a-kind "The Bootleg Show."

Adult tickets are priced at THB180, Students (with ID) at THB100, and there is free entry for kids under 100 cm. You can purchase these tickets here.

Held annually for over 14 years since 2011, “Thai Night” has served as a key platform in highlighting the strength and influence of Thailand’s entertainment industry. It fosters collaboration between Thai entrepreneurs and international buyers and investors, helping promote long-term growth and sustainability in the sector.

Most importantly, it is a valuable opportunity to present Thailand’s rich culture and soft power on a global stage. Additionally, the event features the “Thai Pavilion,” where representatives from Thailand’s film industry participated in business matching with global partners. The pavilion is located at Booth 22.01, Palais -1, at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes, and is open from May 13 to 21, 2025

Another highlight of “Thai Night” is the presentation of Thai cuisine under the “Thai Selectcertification, which guarantees the authenticity and quality of traditional Thai flavors. These dishes will be served at “Thai Night” as part of a reception for international guests, celebrating the unique identity of Thai food.

“The Thai film industry is growing rapidly, as reflected in its increasing production capabilities, entries into international film festivals, and rising interest from global markets,” said the Director-General of DITP, Ms. Sunata Kangvalkulkjj. “Thai Night serves as a platform to showcase the pride and quality of Thai films, and to propel Thailand’s soft power through the film industry. It presents the charm of Thai culture, creativity, and identity to a global audience, while opening doors for business networking with international partners to support the sustainable growth of Thailand’s film industry.”
