Hong Kong Jazz Crew ‘Soul Funk’d Ape’ Launch Album at Soho House on Jun. 24
New Hong Kong-based jazz ensemble ‘Soul Funk’d Ape’ are celebrating their first album launch at SoHo House on Jun. 24, bringing to crowds new original music for the first time.
Formerly the Carpio Brothers Quartet, the group is pivoting to creating their own expressions of jazz with Soul Funk’d Ape, bringing together multiple genres to create a distinctive sound.
The band includes Bernard Caprio of the saxophone, Chris Carpio on the keyboard, bassist Jezrael Lucero, and drummer Huang Tzu Yu.
“Our group was formed all the way back in 2016 as the original Carpio Brothers Quartet,” Chris Carpio explains to The Beat Asia. “Over the years, we started to create our own original music and wanted to have a different band identity. Thus, we re-branded the band to Soul Funk'd Ape.”
“We've been preparing this album since 2020 and did most of the work then. Now things have opened, we're looking forward to putting on a one-of-a-kind show.”
