‘Expats’ Set to Debut on Prime Video: Starring Nicole Kidman in Hong Kong
October 08, 2023
‘Expats,’ the much-anticipated Amazon Studios web series featuring the renowned Nicole Kidman, is all set to debut via Prime Video on Jan. 26, 2024.
This limited six-episode series, directed by Lulu Wang of ‘The Farewell’ fame, promises a gripping drama set against the backdrop of 2014 Hong Kong.
Filmed on location, ‘Expats’ is an adaptation of Janice Y. K. Lee's novel, ‘The Expatriates,’ and has been a project in the making since 2018. Amazon Studios first greenlit the adaptation in collaboration with Blossom Films, the production company helmed by Kidman 001herself.
The story, adapted from Lee's novel, revolves around three women living in Hong Kong whose lives intersect when Kidman's character's son goes missing. These titular expatriates come from diverse backgrounds, moving from America to Hong Kong, each grappling with their pasts and how they shape their futures.
Margaret (Nicole Kidman) and Hilary (Sarayu Blue), both married women, bear the weight of past tragedies in their domestic lives, while Mercy (Ji-young Yoo), a recent college graduate, seeks a fresh start. Fate connects these women, compelling them to confront issues challenging their relationships and well-being. Joining this talented trio are Jack Huston and Brian Tee in supporting roles.
Notably, the fifth episode, titled 'Central,' already premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and is set for its European debut at the 2023 London International Film Festival on Oct. 9.
As for its release format on Prime Video, whether all six episodes will be available at once or released weekly is yet to be confirmed. Click here to see the series title page on Amazon.
