A sequel to one of Hollywood’s most beloved “chick flicks”? Groundbreaking. No really!

When Puck released that article citing the “Devil in a Cerulean Dress," we thought we might have to eat a cube of cheese to keep us from fainting. Since then, several US media sites such as the Hollywood Report and Variety have reported that a sequel is being developed for the 2006 hit movie starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt. While nothing is set in stone yet, here’s what we know.

Aline Brosh McKenna, the original screenwriter, will be penning the script. It’ll be produced by Oscar-winning film producer Wendy Finerman, who also backed the first film with 20th Century Fox. With Disney buying out Fox in 2019, the sequel would mostly fall under the House of Mouse.

It is still uncertain who from the original cast will return, but there are reports that the storyline will revolve around Miranda Priestly, the iconic fashion editor, navigating her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing. Emily Blunt’s character receives a major upgrade in this sequel, as the secretary is now a top-notch executive from a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly needs to keep her publication afloat.

Fans have been speculating a sequel for years, and it only made them want it more when the leading trio reunited onstage earlier this year at the 2024 SAG awards. Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt also recently sat down with Variety to reminisce on their experiences while working on the film for the Actors on Actors series.

“The Devil Wears Prada” is based on a 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger about an aspiring journalist who ends up becoming an assistant for a fashion magazine. The story follows her nightmarish experiences with her brilliant but cruel boss. The film grossed a stellar $326 million at the worldwide box office and earned Meryl Streep an Oscar nomination.

A stage musical was also produced featuring an original score by Elton John, and direction and choreography by Tony-award winner Jerry Mitchell. They had an industry-only reading in July 2019 before its official world premiere in Chicago three years later. The musical is set to open in London’s West End this October at the Dominion Theatre, with Vanessa Williams playing the role of Miranda Priestly.
