Seven Sundays (2017)

When the Bonifacio children discover that their father has been diagnosed with cancer, they reunite to spend their remaining two months with him. However, the seven sundays they spend together forces them to address unresolved issues and personal struggles, which tests their relationship as a family.
Philippine cinema is known to produce some of the most moving films out there, and “Seven Sundays” is no exception. With a powerhouse cast starring Ronaldo Valdez, Dingdong Dantes, Cristine Reyes, and Aga Muhlach, the movie portrays the realities of familial ties and how bonds between parent and child play an important role in the foundation of our identities. Themes of love and time takes center stage in this beautiful film, reminding us to be grateful to our parents and to cherish every single moment we have with them.

Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2013)

Based on a true story, this South Korean film follows the story of a mentally handicapped man (Yong-Goo) who is falsely charged with murder. In prison, he befriends his inmates who help him form a plan to smuggle his young daughter (Ye-Sung) into his cell to see her again.
“Miracle in Cell No. 7” is a heart-wrenching tale of a father’s love for his daughter and how it goes beyond reason and time. As unfathomable love is, it is also as simple as wanting to see your loved ones again—no matter the cost.
With its blockbuster success, several remakes have been produced around the world, including a Filipino film starring renowned actors Aga Muhlach, Xia Vigor, Joel Torre, and Bella Padilla. The movie was an instant hit upon premiering at the Metro Manila Film Festival in 2019.

Fathers (2016)

Diversity and Inclusivity in cinema is steadily gaining transaction in recent years, allowing more stories to be told from underrepresented groups. “Fathers” is one of these as it centers on two men raising a child. Starring Asda Panichkul and Nat Sakdatorn, the film tells the story of how they struggle to raise their adoptive son when he begins asking about his mother and why exactly he has two fathers.
Sincere and brimming with heartfelt scenes, this film portrays the highs and lows of parenting and how there’s no uncomplicated way to build a family. A beautiful addition to the LGBTQ+ film roster, “Fathers” is not only a great watch this Father’s Day but for this #Pride month too!

The Incredibles 2 (2018)

While the Pixar smash hit, “The Incredibles” told the story of how Robert ‘Bob’ Parr (a.k.a. Mr. Incredible) returned to his superhero work after struggling to hang up his cape when “supers” were banned from the world, it was in the sequel where he truly shone, proving that not all heroes wear capes… Sometimes, they wear aprons and solve high school algebra.
In “Incredibles 2,” we see Bob take on the role of a “House Husband” as his wife Helen (a.k.a. Elastigirl) go off to do superhero work. Between Elastigirl’s action-packed scenes and heroic pursuits, we see Robert’s equally exciting victories and struggles as a stay-at-home parent as he takes care of his three super kids. Faced with the realities and challenges of parenthood, Robert realizes parenting is just as hard as defeating villains. But if there is one thing our fathers are, it is that they are incredible and can rise to any challenge…just like Robert did.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

This heartwarming film follows widowed architect Sam Baldwin whose eight-year-old son, Jonah, calls in to a radio show asking for a new partner for his grieving father. The brief interview ends up with Sam talking about his late wife, making millions of (women) listeners to fall in love and to send him love letters. Including journalist Annie Reed, who becomes enamored by the father-and-son and travels halfway across the country to meet them.
Starring A-list actors Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, “Sleepless in Seattle” is a touching tale of grief, parental love, and the hope for new beginnings. More than just a romance, the film brilliantly presents the struggles of single parenthood and coping with a lost love that came close to what everyone calls: magic. This Nora Ephron classic can soften anyone’s heart and is the perfect easy-going film for you and your dad this weekend.

Mamma Mia! (2008)
