Thailand’s Oldest Movie House is to Reopen for One Day Only this Apr. 26

Thai film buffs and history lovers surely wouldn’t want to miss this.
The Crown Property Bureau, in partnership with the Thai Film Archive and the Nang Loeng Community, will be hosting the “107 Years of Sala Chalerm Thani” in celebration of the 107th anniversary of Thailand’s oldest wooden stand-alone movie theatre, the Sala Chalerm Thai Theatre.
The theatre, which first opened in 1918, will be reopening for the first time in 30 years with a special screening of the 1993 film “My Wonder Year” on Apr. 26, 2025. The film was directed by King-Somjing Srisuphap and starred Thai film icons Saksit Tangthong and Patiparn Patavekarn.
Situated in the Nang Loeng quarter of the Rattanakosin district, the Nang Loeng Theatre is the oldest cinema in Thailand. It first opened in 1918 during the silent film era and was built in a similar design to a barn.
In the 1930s, it was renamed the Sala Chalerm Thani Theatre. For years, it became Nan Loeng’s main source of entertainment until it quietly closed down in 1993.
