Pegged to “understand the true nature of the universe,” Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced the launch of his own artificial intelligence (AI) firm, xAI. The startup is expected to rival today’s biggest AI innovators, OpenAI and Google.

The announcement, which contains brief information about the new company, came with the launch of xAI’s official website and Twitter page.

According to the website, the xAI team is helmed by Musk and AI practitioners who have previously worked with OpenAI, DeepMind, Microsoft Research, and the University of Toronto, among others. The team is advised by the Center of AI Safety’s director Dan Hendrycks.

Some of the biggest breakthroughs in the field, including GPT-4, AlphaStar, Minerva, and Inception, were also pioneered by the xAI team members.

“We are a separate company from X Corp, but will work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission,” the website also said.

Currently, the startup is recruiting experienced engineers and researchers to join the team based in the Bay Area. xAI likewise encouraged the public to meet the firm’s team and ask them questions about the new platform through a Twitter Spaces chat that will occur on July 14.
