Bangkok's Karun Thai Tea Toasts 7 Years with First Overseas Shop in HK

Karun Thai MainPhoto by Instagram/ Karun Thai Tea

Karun Thai Tea, the Bangkok-based tea brand known for their rich milk teas and playful flavors, is marking their 7th anniversary by opening their first location outside Thailand. And the tea brand is landing in Hong Kong!

The brand announced the milestone on Instagram, inviting fans to "celebrate its next chapter together." Karun hasn't shared the new shop's address or a specific opening date, but the timing lines up with a giveaway that flies winners to Hong Kong in late October, hinting at when doors might open.

Karun, which opened in 2019, built its Bangkok following on classic Thai iced milk tea, roasted variations, and a rotating menu of fruit- and floral-infused riffs. The Hong Kong shop marks the brand's first step outside of Thailand — a fitting jump to a city that takes its bubble tea seriously.

To mark the occasion, Karun is running a giveaway for their membership program from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15, 2026. Every THB700 spent on a single receipt earns one entry, and entries stack. Separate smaller receipts can't be combined to qualify.

What's the prize? Round-trip business-class tickets to Hong Kong. Four sets of two seats. Winners also receive a "Karun Travel Kit," which includes a voucher for special menu items at the new Hong Kong shop and dining credit at Anping Grill or Master Beef Prime.

Karun is also giving away seven Regular Tea Sets, seven weeks of free daily Thai tea (one cup a day), and seven bundles of seven free toppings.

Winners will be announced on Sept. 21, 2026 across Karun's Facebook, Instagram, and LINE accounts, with final confirmations from the winners by Sept. 25. The prize trip is scheduled for Oct. 23 to 25, 2026. Entrants need an active Karun Membership account. Catering orders are not counted toward the giveaway, and only one grand prize is allowed per person. Full contest rules are available through Karun's social media channels.

Karun has yet to publish their Hong Kong menu. But their Thailand lineup offers a solid preview for curious tea lovers. The core menu spans traditional Thai milk and black teas, roasted Assam, barley, and genmaicha versions, and specialty flavors like sweet osmanthus and cherry berry.

There are more dessert-like combinations that mix yuzu, apple, coconut, and more, while those seeking healthier options can swap in oat, almond, or soy milk.

Every drink is customizable by ice level and sugar percentage, as is typical parlance in a milk tea store. Their topping bar covers homemade boba, brown sugar konjac, whipped cream, and cookie crumble, among others. Karun also offers a slushie lineup, bottled teas for on-the-go, gelato, and seasonal flavors.

Still seeking the ultimate refreshing treat to help you cool down in this weather? Hoping the treat includes some alcohol as well? You're in luck, as two of Hong Kong’s most exciting names in desserts and drinks are joining forces for a limited-time summer treat!

Local favorite gelateria Messina has teamed up with Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026 newcomer MIUS to turn some of the bar’s signature cocktails into two new irresistible gelato and sherbet flavors.

Their "The Scoop" collaboration features two exclusive flavors inspired by cocktails created by MIUS founder and award-winning mixologist Shelley Tai. Known for her balanced, precision-driven approach behind the bar, she has worked with the Messina team to transform two of MIUS’ most popular drinks into frozen form.

The lineup includes Apple-ly Ever After, a non-alcoholic creation inspired by MIUS’ Gin and Apple cocktail. The scoop combines crisp green apple sorbet with coconut, lime leaf, pandan sherbet, and juniper berries for a refreshing, botanical finish.

Meanwhile, A-MIUS-ing Negroni (alcoholic) draws from the bar’s Strawberry Negroni, blending strawberry gelato with Italian amaro and pink peppercorns for a sweet yet bittersweet flavor profile that echoes the classic cocktail.

One memorable collaboration in Ho Chi Minh City last year clearly wasn't enough. This September, Michelin-starred Hong Kong restaurant Whey reunites with Chef Hiep Truong and his team from Vietnam's Upstairs Tasting Room for a two-night dining collaboration.

Taking place on Sept. 7 and 8, 2026, the exclusive dinner brings together the two one-MICHELIN-starred restaurants known for their thoughtful, ingredient-driven approach to Southeast Asian cuisine. Chef Hiep, whose modern Vietnamese tasting menus at Upstairs Tasting Room are rooted in heritage and local traditions, will join forces with Whey Founder Chef Barry Quek and Head Chef Keith Nathaniel Teo for a multi-course menu that explores the culinary connections between Vietnam and Singapore.

MONO Team Takes Over Upper House's Chef's Room for 4 Days

MONO Upper House pop upPhoto by MONO/Instagram

MONO, the One-MICHELIN -starred Latin American restaurant on On Lan Street, will close its doors from Aug. 23 to 31, 2026 for a renovation aimed at making the space feel more intimate.

But before the shutters come down for the refresh, Chef-Founder Ricardo Chaneton and his team are briefly relocating to one of the city's most exclusive tables: Chef's Room at Upper House.

From Aug. 26 to 29, 2026, MONO will take over the 49th-floor culinary studio for a four-day residency, bringing its refined take on Latin American gastronomy to Pacific Place with views of Victoria Harbour. Chef's Room, run in partnership with Chaneton at Upper House, describes itself as a space for intimate residencies by global culinary talent, and this MONO takeover is shaping up to be one of its highlight bookings this year.

The pop-up will run two seatings a day. Lunch is a five-course menu for HK$1,488, featuring MONO staples like the Foie Gras Taco and the 21-Ingredient Black Mole. Dinner steps things up with an eight-course menu for HK$2,888, including the Danish Langoustine and Ecuadorian Cacao Expressions.

Guests can expect a front-row seat to the action: the format is designed to let diners watch the cooking process up close and interact directly with the chefs, rather than admiring from a distance.

Just a few notes: dietary restrictions can't be accommodated within 48 hours of the reservation, and latecomers will be served a shortened version of the menu with no refund. Seatings are limited, and reservations can be made online via this link.

For more information, visit MONO and Chef's Room Instagram pages.

New in Central: French Madeleine Boutique MADÉ Opens on Lyndhurst Terrace

Adding to Hong Kong’s summer of new pastry openings, is MADÉ's soft opening on Lyndhurst Terrace in Central. Dedicated entirely to elevated French madeleines, the boutique also pays homage to Hong Kong through colorful mahjong-themed marketing.

Founded by French couple Marie and Jean-Charles, the new takeaway concept puts a modern spin on the classic shell-shaped cake, transforming it from a simple tea-time treat into a handcrafted indulgence. Instead of traditional madeleines, expect generously sized creations with layered textures, refined flavor combinations, and premium French ingredients. The batter is rested for 12 hours before baking, and every batch is made fresh throughout the day in an open-view atelier.

Foodies can choose from six signature flavors, including the chocolate-packed The Choc-o-holic, matcha and white chocolate The Bitter-Sweet Symphony, black sesame-filled The Dark Secret, lemony Zest Appeal, and The Local Star, a Hong Kong-inspired version with a smooth egg tart custard center.

Those curious to sample the lineup can start with a minimum order of three madeleines for HK$98, while larger sharing boxes go up to 20 pieces for HK$488.

More than just a bakery, MADÉ is built around the idea of creating a daily pause amid Central’s fast-paced energy through their #myMADmoment philosophy. To celebrate their soft opening, the boutique is giving away extra madeleines with every order: buy three and receive one complimentary madeleine, buy six and get two extra pieces, buy 12 and receive three extras, while purchases of 20 madeleines come with four complimentary pieces.

MADÉ is open daily from 11 AM to 8 PM. Look forward to monthly seasonal creations and limited-edition flavors arriving later this year. For more details and updates, follow them on Instagram.

Location: G/F, 54 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, Hong Kong

Don't Miss 852 Mahjong Social's Monthly Mahjong Nights at BaseHall

852 Mahjong Social will host their August edition of their monthly "Mahjong Nights" at BaseHall 02 on Aug. 12, 2026, from 7 to 10 PM.

Tickets cost HK$250 per person, which includes a HK$100 BaseHall food voucher. You can grab tickets in the club's Instagram bio.

The event, set in BaseHall's BH02 Event Space, is the latest installment of the club's monthly mixer. Organizers said they'll lay out 15 to 20 tables, spanning a range of styles and skill levels, then match guests to seats based on pace and personality.

Beginners are 100% welcome, but complete novices should brush up first. Players need a working knowledge of gameplay, so rounds stay fair for everyone at the table. For guests who already know the basics and want to sharpen them, though, they say the club is one of the fastest ways to level up.

Beyond the mahjong, the three-hour event includes mini table games sprinkled throughout the night, with a sponsor-backed prize for whoever wins. There's strictly no gambling involved. Organizers have said the games are for fun only.

"We're really here for strengthening the connection, honoring the culture and building the community," the founders told The Beat Asia.

The event taps into a familiar problem for younger players: plenty of people want to play mahjong but don't always have a group to call on to play, and even fewer want to deal with hosting. It's also quite intimidating for newcomers to join the local mahjong scene where games move faster than beginners can follow. Their club aims to be the complete opposite.

"Some of our guests tell us that the locals are a little bit too fast and scary and intimidating, and we are very inclusive at our club," the founders told The Beat Asia. "There's absolutely no gambling, and we're just here to have some fun, meet people and play mahjong."
