HK’s Famed NYE Fireworks Display at Victoria Harbour is Cancelled

If you were looking forward to ringing in the New Year with a bang at Victoria Harbour, we may have some unfortunate news. The Hong Kong Tourism Board has announced that the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display has been cancelled.

The decision was confirmed through an official government statement released on Dec. 17. While no specific reason was given, the cancellation is believed to be linked to the recent tragedy in Tai Po last month.

However, that doesn’t mean that the event is completely scrapped. The New Year Countdown on Dec. 31, 2025 will be moved to Chater Road pedestrian zone in Central, with full event details to be announced soon.

Fireworks displays at Victoria Harbour have long been a highlight of Hong Kong’s festive calendar, regularly drawing massive crowds and international attention. From the Lunar New Year fireworks to the New Year’s Eve countdown shows that span large sections of the harbour front, these spectacles have become must-see events for both locals and visitors.

This year may feel a little different, but it’s still far too early to say that New Year’s Eve is ruined. Who knows? The upcoming lineup of celebrations might just surprise us and more than make up for what’s missing.

And if you’re truly set on witnessing a spectacular fireworks display, Hong Kong Disneyland is pulling out all the stops with its New Year’s Eve Countdown Party, complete with dazzling fireworks and immersive projections lighting up the Castle of Magical Dreams — an enchanting way to ring in the new year on a high note.

Step back into Hawkins and descend into the Upside Down as the 8 Degree North x Stranger Things pop-up has finally arrived at K11 MUSEA ’s Sunken Plaza! From now until Jan. 11, 2026, visitors will get the chance to explore the immersive experience through a two-level concept filled with exclusive, limited-edition 80s-inspired merch — just in time for the popular Netflix series’ fifth season.

8 Degree North is the first lifestyle brand in Hong Kong to reveal official Stranger Things Season 5 merchandise and is the first brand to globally release a cross-category collection spanning apparel and lifestyle goods. Joining the collab is Bark n Bites, debuting Asia’s first Stranger Things-themed pet apparel, extending the fandom to beloved furry companions.

But first and foremost, you need to choose what kind of tree you want.

In Hong Kong, most of your choices will be limited to: Noble Fir, Douglas Fir or Nordmann Fir.

Noble Fir: This tree is slightly lighter in color, with short, blue-green needles. The Noble fir has some of the best needle retention among Christmas tree species, with stiff branches and an attractive form to handle heavy ornaments.

Douglas Fir: This is a classic Christmas tree vibe. Dense with soft, light green needles and a pleasant scent, the Douglas fir is one of the most popular Christmas tree species. Because the branches are not as stiff as some other species, the Douglas fir is best decorated with lightweight ornaments.

Nordmann Fir: Darker than almost any other fir, the Nordmann fir features glossy, dark green needles and excellent needle retention. The structure presents in a layered or tiered fashion, with sturdy branches for displaying ornaments. This tree has very little or almost no fragrance, making it a great option for those who may be sensitive to scent.
