Robbie McRobbie Talks About the Beautiful Game with HK's Top Villain

As World Cup fever nears its peak, local football fans still have much to look forward to, as next month Kai Tak Stadium welcomes six of the biggest clubs in Europe to battle in our very own international football fiesta.
First up, the Hong Kong Football Festival returns after last year’s inaugural success, featuring two mouth-watering Anglo-Italian match-ups. On Aug. 1, 2026, FA Cup winners Manchester City take on Serie A champions Inter Milan, while on Aug. 5, it’s the turn of FIFA Club World Cup champions Chelsea to face the legendary Juventus.
The third and final fixture is the Audi Football Summit 2026, which takes place on Aug. 7 and sees reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich up against the recently crowned UEFA Europa League champions Aston Villa, a rematch of the epic 1982 European Cup Final.
This is Villa’s first trip to Hong Kong for 15 years, and it’s fair to say that there’s no one more excited about their return than Kidd So, Chair of the Hong Kong Aston Villa Fan Club.

Founded in 1874, Villa is one of England’s oldest football clubs based in the industrial heartland of Birmingham — more recently made famous as the location for the Peaky Blinders Netflix series. They are also historically one of the most successful sides in England, having won not only multiple domestic honors but also the European Cup.
True Claret and Blue
Of course it's fair to say that Kidd is no ordinary fan — just ask his wife, who had to fly all the way to Villa Park in Birmingham for their wedding photos, or his daughter who he named Claret after the club’s distinctive shirt colors of claret and blue.
So how did a local Hong Konger, born and bred, end up a die-hard "Villain"?
"Back in the early 90s, I used to watch English football on TV with my Dad and the rest of the family, and I just fell in love with those beautiful colorful shirts," Kidd recalls. "Villa's form in those years was a bit hit and miss, but in 1995/96 we finished fourth in the Premiership, won the League Cup, and the club signed the wonderfully talented Alan Wright — that was me sold!"
"Later on, during the David O'Leary and Martin O'Neill eras, the club really took off, which is when a lot of today's fans started paying attention to Villa — and that was exactly when I truly fell head over heels for this club."
He discovered and joined the Hong Kong Aston Villa Fan Club, known as the Hong Kong Lions Club. When the fan club founder, Daniel Watts, headed home to the UK in 2014, the reins were entrusted to Kidd.

The Fan Club at the time consisted of a small hard-core group of expats. Over the years, however, the membership has grown to over 100 — majority of whom are locals.
"We have a WhatsApp group to keep connected. I run a Facebook page and a YouTube channel, and every two or three months we get together for a live watch party," Kidd shares.
The fans also get an opportunity to enjoy some live action once a year, as the Villa Academy side are regular participants in the HKFC Soccer Sevens, which allows them the opportunity to get up close with the stars of the future. Kidd reveals, "I got the chance to watch Jack Grealish as a youngster coming through at the Sevens, and it's always encouraging to see the home-grown talent the club is producing."

The 15 Year Wait Ends
However, the last time the senior Villa team visited the city was back in 2011 when they played Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea at the old Hong Kong Stadium, an occasion Kidd has fond memories of as he was interviewed for the Aston Villa Club TV show.
So when it was announced that they would be returning this summer and taking on the powerhouse of Bayern Munich, it was a call to action for Kidd and the local fans to make sure their heroes receive the welcome they deserve: "We have been liaising closely with the club, of course, and we're arranging a special welcome for the squad at the airport. We're also in contact with the Hong Kong Bayern Munich fan club, and we've challenged them to a friendly match before the big game — you never know, we might even see some club legends turn up for a run!"
When asked which of the Villa stars he is most looking forward to seeing in the flesh, Kidd has no hesitation in naming the inspirational Club Captain "Super" John McGinn.
He adds, "John has been with the club since our days in the Championship; he never gives less than 100% on the pitch, and he's great with the supporters. We all love John so much. I'm also hoping to get a chance to see Tyrone Mings. When he suffered a long-term injury a couple of years ago, my daughter made him a video to wish him a speedy recovery, and he sent her a lovely message back thanking her...it would be special if she got to meet him in person this time."

The Kai Tak Magic
As well as the thrill of watching his beloved Villa live, Kidd is also looking forward to his first experience in Kai Tak Stadium: "Unfortunately, I wasn't quick enough to secure tickets for last year's sold-out Hong Kong China representative team matches, but I heard so many positive reports afterwards about the Kai Tak atmosphere that I've been itching to see for myself."
He adds, "So to be watching the greatest football team in the best Stadium, it doesn't get any better than that!"

The People’s Game
The World Cup has not been without its controversies, but it has yet again demonstrated that there is no other sport that can bring countries to a standstill when their teams are in action.
For those who attended the Hong Kong China men’s representative team games at a packed-out Kai Tak, it was truly a reminder that at its best, football remains the “beautiful game.” A unifying force in society.
We look forward to hosting another world class sports event to the city. See you at Kai Tak!
