“Music became my sanctuary and my voice.”

In the chaos of life, finding a moment of peace can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Yet, there’s one place many of us turn to for solace, a space where worries fade and the world seems to pause: music.

Meet Ekai, an up-and-coming singer-songwriter from the Philippines. For her, music is like a personal diary, there to carry her deepest thoughts and tell her unspoken feelings. This transcends into her own craft, which aims to bring healing and comfort to anyone who listens to it.

From being inspired by Taylor Swift’s music and posting song covers on Facebook, Ekai found her way into the music industry. Today, with her angelic voice and heartfelt melodies, the young singer is capturing the hearts of listeners from around the world.

Fresh off her nomination at the 37th Awit Awards for her TikTok-viral song, “Di Nila Alam,” Ekai spoke to The Beat Asia about her inspirations, her recent achievements, her latest single, “Talaarawan,” and many more. Read on to get to know this emerging singer!

Hi Ekai! Can you tell us about yourself, your beginnings, and what made you venture into music?

Since childhood, my heart has been deeply intertwined with the magic of music. Singing was my first passion, and I've always dreamt of performing under the bright stage lights. Growing up, Taylor Swift's music was my constant companion, inspiring me to pick up the guitar at the age of 12. With my brother's support and countless YouTube tutorials, I embarked on my musical journey.

However, life took unexpected turns, and I found myself drifting away from music, even becoming fearful of singing. In those challenging times, I sought solace in learning new instruments like the drums, cajon beatbox, and ukulele. Despite this detour, music's magnetic pull eventually drew me back.

Years later, I began recording short song covers with my guitar and sharing them on Facebook. In the realm of songwriting, I discovered a profound outlet for my innermost thoughts and emotions. Writing became my way of articulating the unsaid, a vessel for my unspoken feelings and affections. Music, once again, became my sanctuary and my voice.

How would you describe your music for those who haven't heard of it yet?

I would describe my music as an intimate journey, inviting listeners to step into my world and experience my stories of life. Through each melody and lyric, there's a palpable sense of vulnerability, creating a deep connection that resonates on a personal level. As an artist, my ultimate goal is to craft music that heals and comforts. I aspire for my art to be a sanctuary, a haven where people can find solace and feel safe [being] their authentic selves.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician?

What I enjoy most about being a musician is the vibrant community that comes with it. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals who share my passion is profoundly rewarding. As an artist, having a support system that understands and accompanies you throughout your journey is essential. This network of fellow creatives not only nurtures my artistic growth but also provides steadfast encouragement and a sense of belonging.

We heard you're a fan of Taylor Swift! What drew you into her music and how does she inspire yours? Could you tell us some other artists/bands that have also inspired your work?

Taylor Swift’s music throughout the years has had a great impact in a way that I feel like I grew up with her. Her songs became the indirect expression of the things I could not put into words. Because of the comfort I felt whenever I listened to her music, I wanted to also be an artist who could have that effect on my listeners.

"Dilaw," with their pure OPM sound and the rawness of their vocals, inspired me to write more Tagalog songs and give emphasis on how to beautifully sing using our native language.

Your TikTok-viral hit, "Di Nila Alam," now has over 200k streams on Spotify and is nominated at the prestigious Awit Awards. How do you feel about these achievements? And what was it like when you found out that you're nominated for an Awit Award?

I feel very grateful. The achievements of my songs have taught me to appreciate even small wins. It also motivated me to work harder and enjoy the process of everything. When I found out about being nominated for the 37th Awit Awards, I honestly couldn't believe it at first. I was already really happy, even to just see my name out there.

We'd like to take a peek at your creative process. Where do you get inspiration and how do you usually create your songs?

All the songs I’ve written are deeply rooted in my personal experiences. I strive for honesty in my music, hoping that listeners can empathize with and relate to my stories. In the solitude of my room, with only my guitar, I craft melodies and lyrics simultaneously, vividly visualizing the narratives in my mind.

There have been moments of spontaneous collaboration with other artists during various studio sessions, resulting in the creation of new songs. However, more often than not, I find myself creating my art in the privacy of my own space, where I can fully immerse myself in my emotions.

Let's talk about your recent single, "Talaarawan." What is it about and what was the story behind this song?

Talaarawan” is a song about the so-called "backburners," the "second options," and the people who are never noticed. The term "backburner" has recently gained popularity on TikTok, as people relate to it in the sense that they are kept in a no-label relationship and are being treated like a safety net. The lyrics tell the experience of a person who is always there but is never chosen.

"Talaarawan" means diary or a daily journal. This is the chosen title because people who are used as "backburners" are often treated like "human diaries."

You've already achieved impressive feats despite being young and new in the music scene. What more would you like to achieve in the future?

As I continue my journey as a recording artist, my goal is [to focus] not only on my music but also impact their lives. To be able to be an avenue of comfort and to set a good example as an artist. Music has saved me and helped me in ways I can’t explain, and with that experience, I believe that people need more music.

If given the chance to collaborate with another artist, locally or internationally, who would it be and why?

I would really love to be able to make music with Beabadoobee, an international artist who is also a Filipina. I want to explore her style and be able to learn [about] her creative process in songwriting.

What's next for Ekai? Any upcoming gigs, music, or activities we can expect soon?

This month, I'll be diving into a series of live performances. I've been working on a lot of new songs, exploring fresh sounds and styles, and I can’t wait to share them with you!
