Dance Theatre Work 'Burying Children' Imagines a World With No Children

Theatre fans, don't let Women's History Month pass without catching "Burying Children."

A dance theatre production with some music and aerial silks thrown in, "Burying Children" takes place in a dystopian world where the solution to overpopulation is a zero-child policy. With an all-woman cast, it follows the journey of a nomadic group of women who abandon the city as objection to this policy and find themselves in the arms of mother nature.

Written and directed by Bold Moment's co-founder Khairul Kamsani, the production asks the question, "Who mandates the life of a child?" and is both an investigation of "burying children within ourselves" and the concept of rejecting childbearing in a world where the future is bleak.

"Burying Children" is an important work for Kamsani as a theatre artist, who considered the production "as a grounds for the questions to be engaged with in our contemporary social and political climate."

"With the subject matters being potentially highly political, controversial and lengthily discursive, I wanted to allow the responses to the contexts emerge through physical expression; how does the live human body reconcile with the mind games that we play with ourselves? What does the body want to say to the choices that our mind believes it has made up?” Kamsani’s director’s note read.

The show stars Adi Amon Mesika, Kristina Pakhomova, Nadia Rahman, Tatiana Konovalova, Kelly Choo, and Tang Sook Kuan.

You can still catch "Burying Children" until Sunday, March 26, at the Esplanade Theatre Studio. Standard tickets are priced at S$55, whereas tickets for students, seniors, and national full-time servicemen cost S$45.
