Whether you’re a true-blue or casual watcher of K-dramas, the name Song Kang will ring a bell. Netflix subscribers would have definitely seen his name come up a few times, considering the South Korean actor has been dubbed “The Son of Netflix” as the streaming service is home to most of his notable dramas with even two originals in the mix!
Since his acting debut in the 2017 series “The Liar and His Lover,” Song Kang has played a variety of roles in film and television; from a passionate ballerino to a pitiless demon (we love a man who can do both!), showcasing his versatility. He has also been featured in music videos, modeled for iconic clothing brands, and appeared as an MC in the popular variety show, Inkigayo.
It's safe to say that his rise to fame is inevitable and with his talent and boyish charm, viewers just can’t get enough of the South Korean heartthrob, which resulted in several projects the actor has been receiving left and right in recent years.
From horror thrillers to sweeping romantic fantasies, we rounded up Song Kang’s best K-dramas you can readily watch on Netflix. And ICYDK: “Sweet Home” season 3 comes out July 19, so there is no better time to binge his other shows before the new episodes drop. Grab some popcorn, folks! We’re about to do a Song Kang marathon!
Love Alarm (2019)
2 Seasons | 14 episodes | Romance, Sci-Fi, Drama
Song Kang made waves in his first leading role in a K-drama when he played a troubled high schooler in this Netflix original series. Love Alarm is about a mobile application that can show if someone within 10 meters has romantic feelings for you (we’re not sure if we should be scared or excited about this kind of app in real life). Song Kang stars as Hwang Sun-oh alongside Kim So-hyun’s Kim Jo-jo, and their two characters fall in love and get tangled in a love triangle caused by the app. Ironic considering technology is supposed to make our lives easier, not messier.
This series is what catapulted Song Kang into the spotlight and was one of the top K-drama releases of 2019. Due to its popularity, it was renewed that same year and the second season premiered in March 2021. Richard Yu of Cinema Escapist commended the series for portraying the negative influences of social media and pegged the show as “Black Mirror” meets “Mean Girls.” As the first original Netflix K-drama, its success paved the way for global hits such as “Squid Game” and “All of Us Are Dead.”
Navillera (2021)
1 Season | 12 episodes | Drama
Also known as “Like a Butterfly,” this next drama on the list features Song Kang’s dancing skills as he plays the role of a talented ballet dancer who crosses path with a 70-year-old retired mailman pursuing his lifelong ballet dream. Together, they lift each other up as they face the harsh realities that come with chasing one’s dream.
The actor admitted that it was his most “emotional and physically daunting role” and that he underwent five to six months of ballet training for it. Just like a butterfly, Song Kang transformed in this series, proving his talent and growth as an actor.
Nevertheless (2021)
1 Season | 10 episodes | Romance Drama
Starring alongside Han So-hee, Song Kang takes on the role of a playboy who avoids commitment (sounds familiar? Kidding!). Adapted from a popular webtoon, two art students: one who had been burned by love and lost all belief in it, another who flirts away but thinks relationships are a drag, form an instant connection fueled by an undeniable attraction.
It’s romantic, heart-wrenching, and dare we say it, even steamy for K-drama standards (IYKYK). This show will have viewers hating and loving the male lead (more love, we hope!) which only proves that Song Kang did a convincing job of showing the complexities of his character, who is someone still learning what it means to love someone.
Forecasting Love & Weather (2022)
1 Season | 16 episodes | Romance, Drama
With all his romantic drama projects, Song Kang wouldn’t miss adding an office romance to his growing list of hits. And what’s better is that he’s starring alongside rom-com queen, Park Min-Young (“What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim” and “Her Private Life”).
Forecasting Love & Weather portrays the work and love life of employees at the Korea Meteorological Administration, with a focus on the relationship between general forecaster, Jin Ha-Kyung (Park Min-Young), and her younger colleague, Lee Si-Woo (Song Kang). The series is perfect if you’re looking for an easy-going love story to watch, but sweet summer nights could easily turn into turbulent storms, so fair warning! After all, love is just as unpredictable as the weather.
My Demon (2023)
1 Season | 16 episodes | Romance, Fantasy, Comedy
In his latest series, Song Kang ventures into the fantasy genre in one of the most anticipated tandems of 2023 as he stars alongside South Korea’s “Sageuk Fairy” Kim Yoo Jung. In this thrilling romantasy, a cruel demon becomes powerless when he saves a young heiress from death’s door. He discovers, however, that he can still access it when she’s within his reach, needing to physically touch the cross tattoo on her wrist which was transferred to her at the time he lost his powers. And so, their lives entangle, and he soon realizes that the woman holds more than just the key to getting his powers back, but also to his heart.
Equal parts comedic and dramatic, My Demon highlights Song Kang’s acting prowess, and even awarding bodies have taken notice. The actor won the Top Excellence Award for a Romance/Romcom miniseries at the SBS Drama Awards 2023, as well as Best Couple with his co-star Kim Yoo Jung.
Sweet Home (2020-present)
2 Seasons* | 16 episodes | Horror, Thriller, Drama
The apocalyptic thriller horror series is one of Netflix’s most successful original series to date with two seasons currently airing and a third one on its way this July 2024. Song Kang plays the role of Cha Hyun-su a high school student who was left alone after an unexpected tragedy killed his family. He moves into a new apartment complex called Green Home, where he becomes trapped along with the other tenants when the world is suddenly ravaged by monsters overnight.
The series stood out with its unique blend of horror, psychological drama, and human sentiment. Having Netflix as its home further amplified its success as it allowed it to reach a diverse global audience.
ICYDN: Universal Studios Singapore is bringing “Sweet Home” to life at their annual Halloween Horror Nights this coming September, aiming to thrill horror fans with staged sets from the acclaimed series.
