Aug. 12 Celebrations: Her Majesty’s Birthday, National Textile Day, and Mother’s Day in Thailand

On Aug. 12, Thailand celebrates the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother, along with National Thai Textile Day and Mother’s Day. That’s a lot of celebrations in one day, but it only goes to show how much Thais value their Queen Mother and her contributions to the kingdom.
Let’s look into how these celebrations came to be and how Aug. 12 has been an important date to the people of Thailand.
Thailand Mother’s Day
While International Mother’s Day takes place every second Sunday of May, Thailand has assigned a specific date for them to celebrate this important day — Aug. 12.
Queen Sirikit’s leadership greatly complemented His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great’s rule. She was appointed as the queen regent when His Majesty entered the Buddhist monkhood in 1956, and did an outstanding job at it. She also empowered Thai women in the rural communities and created SUPPORT Foundation, so they can sell their handicrafts while preserving the history and craftsmanship of Thai textiles. Her Majesty’s love for the people has been likened to a mother’s unconditional love, so the date for Mother’s Day in Thailand was changed to Aug. 12 in 1976 to coincide with her birthday.
As Her Majesty’s birthday is a national holiday, many Thais celebrate Mother’s Day or Wan Mae by going back to their hometown and spending time with their family. They also create or buy garlands made of jasmine flowers as per tradition and give them to their mothers.
National Thai Textile Day
To commemorate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, Aug. 12 has been declared as National Thai Textile Day. This is to honour Her Majesty’s dedication to promote and modernise Thai textiles, which is one of the main reasons the industry is thriving today.
In 2003, she requested to renovate the 1873 Ratsadakhorn-bhibhathana Building in the Grand Palace to turn it into a textile museum. The Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles (QSMT) has then been established with the help of SUPPORT Foundation and opened to the public in 2012 as Her Majesty’s gift to the people and its future generations.
If you’re planning to visit the museum, one of the exhibitions you must check out is the “The Power Love.” This exhibit was launched to celebrate the 87th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother on Aug. 12, 2019. It honours her dedication to different fields, including textile, since her royal appointment in 1950. It gives the public a chance to view in person some of Her Majesty’s outfits and accessories such as handbags, handheld fans, and hats.
The exhibit has been around for a long time, but if you still haven’t visited it yet, you only have until Aug. 15, 2022, to drop by. A catalogue published along with the exhibit’s launch is also available for THB1,200 in Thai and English. Other items using Thai textile, such as clutch bags, hilltribe slippers, and headbands, are available in the museum’s online shop. The museum is open daily from 9 AM to 4:30 PM.
