The Mira Makes Durian Dreams Come True at 'Taste of Malaysia'

If you’ve ever been curious about trying the King of Fruits — or proudly count yourself among the durian obsessed — The Mira Hong Kong’s “Taste of Malaysia” shaped up to be the most indulgent event of the season

The durian celebration took place from July 15 to 17 in The Mira Hotel's Penthouse Ballroom, a culinary adventure featuring unlimited premium durian and savory Malaysian delights. 

Due to overwhelming demand, durian lovers can now mark their calendars for newly added dates from July 30 to Aug. 1, 2025

Backed by Miramar Travel and the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board, with the support of Malaysia’s Consul General in Hong Kong, Mr. Muzambli Markam, the event is a deep dive into the rich culture, flavor, and festivity of Malaysia, with a special focus on the "King of Fruit" as a symbol of Malaysian culture and heritage.

This celebration served up a one-ton-a-night durian extravaganza, complete with hawker-style tables and live performances, leaving no palate unchallenged.

Guests could get their hands on exotic fruits, like the “Queen of Fruit” mangosteen, sweet rambutan, and cempedak, and taste their way through five rare, premium durians freshly cracked open before their eyes. 

A highlight of the lineup was the ultra-creamy Musang King D197, the complex Black Thorn D200, and the nostalgic, bitter-sweet XO D24. Making a grand appearance is the bold newcomer from Penang, the Tupai King D214, gunning for “most desirable durian” of the season, and the classic, nostalgic Gang Hai D1.

And because there’s no such thing as too much durian, guests enjoyed unlimited helpings of fresh Musang King and three seasonal durians, highly rated by connoisseurs.

This wasn’t simply a durian buffet, however — it was also an authentic gastronomic journey of Malaysia’s street food and iconic dishes, brought to life with six sizzling live cooking stations

From smoky Char Kway Teow and rich Bak Kut Teh, to golden Fried Oyster Omelette and flavorful Malay Chicken Rice, the air was thick with aroma and excitement, reminiscent of Penang's famous street food markets.

At the hot buffet, must-try regional favorites like Nasi Lemak, tender Beef Rendang, and the tangy, daring Tempoyak Ikan Patin (catfish in fermented durian paste) showcased the true diversity of Malaysian cuisine.

On the list of savory specials, there was a live cooking station of Durian and Chicken Curry with Roti with Peanut and other creative offerings such as Durian PizzaDurian and Pineapple Seafood Fried Rice, and a Baked Vol-au-Vent filled with coconut milk and D24, so indulgent it should come with a warning.

Over at the drinks corner, a Malaysian Pulled Tea Master whipped up frothy glasses of Teh Tarik, while Ipoh coffee, tropical juices, and more kept everyone cool and caffeinated.

Dessert was where Executive Pastry Chef Smita Grosse flexed her durian mastery. 

She transformed different durian varieties into six creative desserts, such as Durian Mille Feuille, using D101 Mas Johor, Choux Puffs filled with D198 Golden Phoenix, perfectly crisp Durian Egg Tarts using the classic D24 Sultan, as well as the crowd-favorite Durian Panna Cotta with D175 Red Prawn.

Between bites, we were treated to a flurry of Malaysian cultural performances: beginning with a high-energy lion dance by Tam Pui Yuen Lion Dance Association, a graceful traditional dance, and a mini concert by Penang’s very own Rax Teh — aka “Dolphin Tone Prince” — who brought serious star power to the stage with his TVB pipes and magnetic presence.

Interactive games like bowling with durians and a durian guessing game added a playful spirit to the event that had the ballroom buzzing with laughter.

For those looking for a heartier meal, Jimmy’s Full English Breakfast (HK$198) is the choice for you!

The Banana Skillet Pancake (HK$138) is served hot in a skillet, this pancake comes topped with cinnamon sugar butter, crispy bacon, and maple syrup. Sweet, salty, and satisfying. 

Last but not least, the Caramelised Banana French Toast (HK$138) is here to indulge you. Brioche meets honey mascarpone and toasted pecans in this decadent dish that doubles as dessert-for-breakfast.

Drinks range from artisanal tea drinks such as the Premium Tangerine Pu Erh Black Tea (HKD$40) and Hangzhou Dragon Well Grean Tea (HKD$40), signature options like Lemon Iron Buddha Sparkling Tea (HKD$35) and Lemongrass Sparkling Green Tea (HKD$35), as well as other refreshments.

Sake Sensation 2025 at The Mira: Elevating the Art of Japanese Sake

If your August calendar is still looking a little too tame, The Mira Hong Kong is about to shake things up. 

Back for its third edition, 'Sake Sensation 2025' promises a spirited celebration of Japanese tradition, craftsmanship, and culinary finesse, all under one roof. From August 8 to 9, the hotel’s penthouse Ballroom will transform into a Kyoto-inspired carnival, setting the stage for one of the city’s largest Japanese sake tasting events, with additional events spanning from August 11 to 24

The best you can expect from this campaign is the return of Hong Kong Sake Festival, co-hosted with the Federation of Japanese Sake Industry of Hong Kong

Attendees will have the rare opportunity to sample over 800 types of premium sake and shochu sourced from 30 local distributors across 43 prefectures of Japan. Among these are award-winning bottles from the 2025 Oriental Sake Awards, including several making their Hong Kong debut. The Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association has also curated a selection of rare shochu, adding depth to the tasting experience.

But is this just about sipping? The Mira is going all out with immersive decorations inspired by Kyoto’s iconic Gion Festival. A Smoking Affair Refreshes Menu with Creative Recipes and New Broths

High above the fray of Causeway Bay, A Smoking Affair delivers an intriguing blend of nostalgia, nightlife, and hotpot — served with a wink and a splash of gin. 

Perched on the 27th floor of Soundwill Plaza II, this 3000 sq. ft. space is decked out in neon lights straight out of 1970s Nathan Road, with bold dai pai dong flair and a side of cheeky charm. Prepare to be transported to vintage Hong Kong, reimagined for today’s late-night crowd.

The newly refreshed menu and culinary team at A Smoking Affair are breathing new life into the local hotpot scene with a nightlife magazine-inspired menu, designed as much for grazing as it is for group karaoke sessions in one of seven private rooms (outfitted with hand-painted murals by local artists and state-of-the-art sound systems).

If you're in the mood for a sunset sesh, grab a cocktail on the outdoor terrace with a front-row view of Victoria Harbour before diving into the broth and beef.

There are nine new soup bases to choose from, with something for every spice tolerance and soul-warming craving. Start with the Signature Satay Broth (HK$168) or the fiery Chongqing Spicy Broth (HK$228), crafted by Sichuan master chef Hu Taiqing of sister restaurant Sichuan Rouge

Enhance your hot pot experience with their selection of signature handmade delicacies — choose from succulent prawn, tender cuttlefish, or flavorful beef meatballs, alongside aromatic truffle dumplings and silky wontons.

Seafood stans won’t be left out either: Boston Lobster (HK$388), Geoduck (HK$998), Razor Clams (HK$78 per piece), Oysters (HK$198) and Kuruma Shrimp (HK$138/6 pieces) are ready to be poached to perfection.

A renowned Japanese bakery from Fukuoka, Moropain, has opened its first overseas branch in Hong Kong. The bakery offers a variety of freshly baked items including their signature Melon Bread and Hong Kong-exclusive Tiramisu Melon Bun and Matcha Melon Bun

Due to a high demand of the Tiramisu Melon Bun, the bun will be offered three different times a day (10AM / 12PM / 2PM) and as Moropain only bakes 20 pieces per flavor a day. Expect a queue! 

The bakery closes on Monday and they're open from 9AM-5PM or until everything is sold out, so always double-check before heading to the bakery.

A delicate gilded butterfly tuile on top nods to the energy of summer and adds an Instagram-worthy flair.

East meets mixology with Baijiu Society, a modern collective founded long-term friends Craig Butler and Bobby Tse that’s shaking up China’s iconic spirit for a new generation of curious drinkers

With roots in tradition and eyes on the global bar cart, Baijiu Society reintroduces baijiu in playful, layered blends designed for mixing and sharing.

Launched in Hong Kong and backed by a community of over 70 baijiu lovers across China, the UK, and beyond, each bottle is a gateway to the rich, aromatic world of baijiu.

The lineup includes six unique blends, crafted from a classic blend of sorghum, wheat, and barley, which is then infused with natural fruit extracts for a bold yet balanced twist.

The brand's signature Blend No. 01 Society stars warming notes of star anise, clove, and orange oil — best served with their signature B&T (Baijiu & Tonic), ice, and a slice of orange. Blend No. 02 Life is a floral hit of peach, pear, and lychee, perfect frozen as a shot or in a Peach Passion Martini.

Blend No. 03 Love, a cherry-forward pink bottle, makes for a gorgeous Hong Kong Sling, while Blend No. 04 Prosperity features zesty yuzu and bitter orange — try it in a Baijiu Negroni or a Yuzu Spritz. 

Blend No. 05 Unity neatly fuses lychee and pear with a smooth, sweet finish, ideal in cocktails with vodka, Vermouth Bianco, and plum sake.

Finally, Joju Dark Coffee Liqueur adds roasted coffee and anise to the mix — shaken into a Baijiu Espresso Martini.

Venner is the Next Nordic-Inspired All-Day Hangout Space for Buns & More

Hong Kong’s café and wine scene is getting a refresh with Venner, a new Nordic-inspired all-day hangout spot bringing together small-batch cakes, coffee, and curated natural wines, opening its doors at 161 Hollywood Road in Hong Kong. 

Founded by Nelson Htoo and Elin Fu, the hospitality duo behind the now-closed Hjem, the space blends Nordic simplicity with cozy community vibes, creating a more intentional, more personal space to enjoy good pastries, playlists, and vibes.

By day, Venner is a calm oasis on Hollywood for coffee and small-batch Nordic bakes, all made in-house. Highlights include locally roasted, medium-to-light roast coffee, alongside ceremonial-grade matcha and seasonal variations like Matcha Coconut (HKD$55) and Double Matcha (HKD$60). 

Signature drinks from Hjem also make a return, including Honey Golden Latte (HKD$48) and Swedish Lemonade (HKD$48). Pastry highlights include the classic Cinnamon and Cardamom Bun (HKD$48), the Skolebrød (HKD$48), and Venner’s signature Breakfast Plate (HKD$88).

By night, Venner’s focus shifts to a curated selection of natural wines from small producers, serving rotational wines by the glass starting from HKD$88. To go with the wine, Venner offers a selection of light bites including a savory Goat’s Cheese Cheesecake (HKD$98), Dates with Proscuitto and Brie (HKD$48), alongside other rotating small plates designed to be easy to share and enjoy without feeling heavy or formal.

HUMAN MADE and Shake Shack just teamed up for an awesome collaboration featuring special menu items and merchandise!

ICYDK, HUMAN MADE is a lifestyle brand launched in 2010 by NIGO, and is built on the concept of "The Future is in the Past," emphasizing both heritage and innovation. The brand has garnered a global following since, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries.

The collaboration merges Shake Shack’s iconic burger logo and HUMAN MADE’s heart, and will feature two exclusive collaboration menus that draw on Japanese and American flavors. Get a taste of the Teriyaki Shack (HK$88 - Single), which is your regular cheeseburger made better, packed with pickled daikon, crispy onions, scallions, and sweet soy mayo on a toasted potato bun, and then topped with a sweet teriyaki glaze and toasted black and white sesame seeds. 

Burger always goes with fries, so don’t miss the Curry Cheese Fries (HK$46), which are crispy crinkle-cut fries topped with curry cheese sauce, applewood-smoked bacon, and scallions. Both items will be available in limited quantities only at IFC Mall, Pacific Place, and Harbour City Shacks*, and served in exclusive packaging featuring the heart-burger collaboration icon.
