Try These Mooncakes for Mid-Autumn Festival 2022

Often called the “Mooncake Festival,” 2022’s Mid-Autumn Festival is only a few weeks away. Hong Kong’s favourite tradition to stuff one’s face full of mooncakes is slated on Sep. 10, with family and friends set to enjoy time on the day gazing at the moon and gifting mooncakes to loved ones.

Shangri-La

Rosewood’s chef Li brings the traditional recipe and cultural food back to the basics with the luxury hotel’s offerings for Mid-Autumn Festival. The Rosewood Traditional White Lotus Seed Paste with Double Egg Yolks (HK$498 for four cakes) sticks with traditions to bring “the mist perfected recipe” of the ever-indulgent white lotus paste-packed mooncake, paired with that classic salted duck egg yolk flavour. The mooncakes are available for purchase and delivery from Aug. 22 to Sept. 10.
Grand Hyatt Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s high-flying luxury hotel offers creative twists in their mooncake selection, with unique flavours such as egg custard with crystallised ginger, mango and coconut, and red date with dried tangerine peel and osmanthus. However, their original flavour white lotus seed paste with two salted egg yolks in the Full Moon Box (HK$468 for four cakes) is to die for. Order online to receive from Aug. 12 to Sept. 10.
China Tang

Elegance and luxury are put forward first with China Tang’s Chinoiserie-patterned mooncake set. Packaged in modern gift boxes, the China Tang Luxury Mooncake Set (HK$388 for four cakes) elegantly infuses patterns of powerful blooms and flower motifs are met with yummy authentic bites of white lotus seed paste with rich double egg yolks. The lotus seed paste is made from traditional recipes and coupled with glistening salted yolks and pure peanut oil, finished with a flaky golden crust for that sweet aroma. Yong Fu

Shanghainese one Michelin-starred restaurant Yong Fu brings the mainland Chinese trend of consuming durian mooncakes during the traditional festival. Famed chef Liu and team brought Malaysian durians over to Hong Kong to create two types of flavoured mooncakes: Musang King Durian Snowskin Mooncake and BlackThorn Durian Snowskin Mooncake (HK$428 for six cakes). Hurry up as availability is capped at 1,000 boxes in Hong Kong, with orders accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Paul Lafayet

French patisserie chain Paul Lafayet has teamed up with illustrator and artist Emilie Sarnel to collaborate on a flavourful and colourful mooncake offering, with the theme of jade rabbits on a fun space journey. Paul Lafayet's Mid-Autumn Mooncake Gift Box (HK$398 for four cakes) is packed with four beautiful flavours: French crème brulee, Manuka honey, early grey, and green tea. Order online from July 4 to Sept. 10!
Steak King

Hong Kong’s artisanal butchery, fishmonger and grocer Steak King is not afraid to flip the Chinese tradition on its head, introducing the Wagyu Beef Wellington Mooncakes (HK$888 for four) to meat-eating Mid-Autumn Festival-celebrating Hong Kongers. Made from M9 Wagyu Tenderloin and encased with truffle mushroom duxelles, wrapped in puff pastry, the mooncakes take inspiration from Gordon Ramsay’s recipe. The mooncakes come frozen in a box of four 150-gram cakes and available for pickup and delivery from Aug. 22 till Sept. 5.
