‘My Spidey Senses Are Tingling’: Malaysia Sets New Guinness World Record
Spider-Man is without a doubt one of the most popular fictional superhero characters from the Marvel franchise. From comics to live-action and animated films, it’s so loved around the world that fans wouldn’t be surprised anymore about the medium it’s going to venture next.
One of the testaments to Spider-Man’s popularity is the world record that Malaysia set last month.
To celebrate the release of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” Sony Pictures Entertainment Malaysia invited fans to swing by at AEON Mall Bukit Tinggi to break the Guinness World Records title of the “largest gathering of people dressed as Spider-Man.”
“Get ready to suit up, sling some webs, and show the world that Malaysia's Spidey fandom is unbeatable! You won't want to miss this web-slinging extravaganza!” their Facebook caption reads.
On June 3, Malaysian fans didn’t disappoint as a total of 685 people suited up to sling their webs! They defeated the record of Sony Pictures Entertainment India on Dec. 15, 2021, with 601 people wearing a Spider-Man costume. Attendees who suited up not only became part of history, but also had the chance to take home a PlayStation 5 and Sony Electronics products.
Official Guinness World Record Adjudicator Kazuyoshi Kirimura announced the success of the attempt in the afternoon, rewarding the certificate to Sony Pictures Malaysia Managing Director Simon Foo and AEON Chief Property Officer Lee Beng Beng.
AEON Mall also posted a recap video of the event, which you can watch on Facebook.
Premiered in cinemas on June 1, “Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse” tells the story of Miles Morales, who encountered a team of Spider-People trying to protect the Multiverse. But their opinions clashed on how to handle a new threat, leading Morales to be pitted against other Spiders.
