Art Exhibits to View in Singapore This October 2021 and Beyond
If, pre-pandemic, art used to be relegated to the backseat as a secondary thing, then the COVID-19 health crisis has shown us otherwise. Ordered to stay indoors to prevent the spread of the disease, we have spent much of our waking hours surrounding and filling our personal lives with art, from movies and music to literature, series, podcasts, and more.
Art has become central to our lives during the pandemic, yet the crisis has also prevented us from enjoying other forms of it such as theater and cinema, as well as the experience of viewing a work of art, such as in a museum or gallery.
Nowadays, however, institutions and galleries in Singapore have begun opening exhibits again to the public. If you’ve missed checking out art installations personal and up close throughout this pandemic, then we recommend you view these exhibits this October and beyond to have your fill.
‘Soft Realities’ – Until Oct. 29
"Soft Realities" at 136 Goethe Lab of the Goethe-Institut of Singapore will be on view to the public until Oct. 29, 2021.
Created by artists Fiona Tan, Finbarr Fallon, and Ong Kian Peng, "Soft Realities" takes inspiration from Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" and is at once a "site-specific installation and subterranean labyrinth." Viewers will be treated to a multi-sensory experience with this exhibit's filmic projections, cut-out silhouettes, and soundscapes.
‘Slander!’ at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) Mini Mobile Museum – Until Oct. 31
Jeremy Sharma's "Slander!" is on view at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) Mini Mobile Museum, a travelling art exhibition held in partnership with the National Library board. "Slander!" is based on Sharma's research on Singapore's films and popular culture from the 1950s to the 1960s, and is like a retrospect of the city-state as an urbanising nation. It is on view until Oct. 31.
Silver Arts Exhibition 2021 – Until Dec. 31
Silver Arts 2021 is a celebration of the art works of Singapore's seniors. For its 10th anniversary this year, the Silver Arts Exhibition will be done in a hybrid format, offering physical and digital programmes for the public to enjoy. Its lineup of over 30 programmes comes in different languages, from English, Malay, and Tamil to Mandarin and Chinese dialects. Silver Arts 2021 will be on view until Dec. 31.
‘A Little Love Story in Singapore’ – Until Jan. 2, 2022
Artist and educator Chiew Sien Kuan's "A Little Love Story in Singapore" is a series of assemblages and mixed-media paintings that rethinks the beginnings of modern Singapore's development. The exhibit, which is held at the Esplanada Tunnel until Jan. 2, 2022, is a visual delight for those who love heritage and urban planning.
‘Orchestral Manoeuvres: See Sound. Feel Sound. Be Sound.’ – Until Jan. 2, 2022
“Orchestral Manoeuvres: See Sound. Feel Sound. Be Sound" is an exhibit at the ArtScience Museum within Marina Bay Sands. It involves 32 composers and contemporary artists the world over to create a far-out exhibit featuring music scores, noise-making sculptures, objects that can speak and sing, and more. You will also encounter singers who don't sing, a choir you can't see, and a piano that plays itself. Interested? "Orchestral Manoeuvres" is on view until Jan. 2, 2022.
