Reimagined with a 20-piece orchestra led by Chino David and directed by Paolo Valenciano, the night promises to be filled with timeless songwriting, powerful storytelling, and sweeping orchestral arrangements that breathe new life into his storied records.
“I’ve had a long love affair with orchestras, dating back to my days as Sugarfree,” Ebe Dancel shared. “As a solo performer, I did a show with The Manila String Machine exactly two weeks before our government announced the lockdown due to COVID. To be back onstage with them now, with fans in front of me, feels like a full circle moment.”
The setlist is said to strike a careful balance between nostalgia and discovery. “I want it to be a mix of old and newer songs. I thought of my audience mainly when I chose songs from the Sugarfree catalog, but I also want them to experience the new songs with an orchestra.”
null

The concert is also Ebe Dancel’s way of deepening his connections further with trusted collaborators. “Paolo [Valenciano] is a dear friend. I have so much respect for him as a concert director, so he was my only choice to do this show again,” he shared. “For me to work on something this big, I need to be able to fully trust the guys running the show. Hence, Paolo Valenciano, and as musical director, Chino David.”
Tickets for “Ebe Dancel with The Manila String Machine: The Repeat Concert” will go on sale this Aug. 30, 2025, at 12 PM via TicketNet online and all authorized TicketNet outlets nationwide.
Ebe Dancel stands as one of OPM’s most enduring voices. From his early days as frontman of Sugarfree to his acclaimed solo career, he has built a body of work defined by sincerity, emotional depth, and artistry. With multiple hit songs, award-winning albums, and sold-out shows, his legacy continues to inspire generations of listeners — young and old, and everything in between.

When Singapore says they're bringing their flavors to Manila, they don't mean a token kaya toast in a small pop-up. They mean Candlenut's Malcolm Lee in the flesh, whipping up dishes alongside the stars of Hapag. They mean Asia's 50 Best Bars (#3) and World's 50 Best Bars 2024 (#5) Jigger & Pony, crafting their take on the Singapore Sling, the OG tropical cocktail. They mean Don Julio-infused cocktails, seaweed-laced Tanqueray tipples, and Poblacion's finest bars.
Welcome to SingaPob 2025, the third annual takeover hosted by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), with partners Diageo, Johnnie Walker, Don Julio, Tanqueray, Singleton, and Zacapa. Happening from Aug. 28 to 30, 2025, SingaPob pairs the best of Singapore's food and bar scene with some of the best hangouts in Makati's vibrant party district.
This year, SingaPob took things up a notch by including not just bar collaborations but restaurant collabs too, giving foodies a more immersive gastronomic experience.
“SingaPob is our way of sharing what makes Singapore a true culinary haven, where passionate culinary talents from diverse backgrounds come together to create and innovate," said Terrence Voon, Executive Director, Southeast Asia, Singapore Tourism Board. "Much like the Philippines, our dining scene is rooted in heritage yet constantly evolving, blending tradition with new ideas to elevate familiar flavors. By bringing this spirit to Poblacion, we hope to celebrate our shared love for food and drinks and invite more Filipinos to discover Singapore’s vibrant culinary community and be inspired to experience it firsthand in Singapore."
Here's a quick rundown of the participating spots and their pairings:
Malcolm Lee x Hapag: Lee of 1 Michelin-starred Candlenut and Pangium partners with Thirdy Dolatre and John Kevin Navoa of Hapag.
Keng Eng Kee x Super Uncle Claypot: A family-run hawker stall, Keng Eng Kee is a Michelin Guide-recognized landmark.
Jigger & Pony x OTO: Asia's 50 Best Bars (#3) and World's 50 Best Bars (#5) Jigger & Pony is Singapore's best bar, ready to sling cocktails at OTO.
Fura x Ayà: Redefining sustainability, as evidenced by their Ketel One Sustainable Award from Asia's 50 Best Bars 2024, you can catch Fura at Ayá.
Mama Diam x Polilya: Retro, nostalgic, and best of all, hidden, Mama Diam partners with Polilya for an enticing food and drinks menu.
Offtrack x Run Rabbit Run: Another Asia's 50 Best Bars (#23) awardee, Offtrack serves both drinks and beats at Run Rabbit Run.
Night Hawk x ???: Located in a secret location, you'll find Asia's 50 Best Bars (#77) and their special drinks only after you've completed the crawl's secret mission. Trust us, it's worth the effort.
OnlyPans Tacqueria: Those who frequent Poblacion would know OnlyPans. It's the go-to before and after drinking, so why not drop by for their exclusive SingaPob menu?

Aside from the drinks and dishes, SingaPob has another surprise for its patrons: a raffle that could win you a trip to Singapore! All you have to do is visit at least two participating venues, get stickers on your wristbands (after showing your receipt, so don't forget to get and keep those!), and post about the crawl on social media using the hashtags: #SingaPob #MadeInSingapore#PassionMadePossible. Once verified, you could enter the raffle at the secret location where Night Hawk is. The SingaPob crew posted at each location will hand over the details for the secret location once they've verified your two stickers.
Apart from the raffle, you can also check out Klook's special travel offer from Aug. 16 to Sept. 30, 2025, featuring exclusive Singapore travel discounts. If the crawl isn't enough, then book that plane ticket to Singapore and take advantage of Klook's promos!
For this weekend, however, The Beat Asia took on the crawl, and while we didn't manage to try all the stops, here is what went down yesterday evening at SingaPob 2025:
Stop #1: Fura x Ayà
null
From left: New Yuck City, Dirty Banana | Photo by The Beat Asia
Sustainability has never been sexier. Fura's takeover of Ayà promised cocktails made from "abundant" and "invasive" ingredients, and we weren't disappointed. We got to try "New Yuck City" and "Dirty Banana," kicking off the crawl on a high note.
"New Yuck City" was a citrus-forward combo of Tanqueray No. 10, seaweed, shio kombu, calamansi, guava, and lime leaf coco foam. It danced between briny and bright, a tropical, beachfront cocktail that took us (mentally and spiritually) out of Makati's bustling business district. If it were a one-drink kind of night, the "New Yuck City" would've been a perfect companion to nurse, idly chatting with your friends in the dim, cozy seats of Ayà.
The citrus notes from calamansi and guava cut through the subtle oceanic umami from the kombu, lifting the drink, while the creamy foam with bright lime rounded off the flavors. Comforting, layered, slightly adventurous. Our SingaPob crawl started off in the best way possible.
Then came the "Dirty Banana," which took Johnnie Walker Black Label and mixed it with Prefer bean-free coffee, green cardamom, dates, banana, and banana skin caramel. It looked like an espresso martini, but behaved like an elevated breakfast or dessert cocktail. The date-banana trio delivered a velvety sweetness, while the cardamom injected a spice-heavy depth balanced against the faint bitterness of the coffee.
Fura's use of banana skin caramel highlighted their sustainability ethos without compromising flavor. The caramel gave the cocktail a toasty, almost burnt sugar complexity that only added to the drink's comforting flavor. In all honesty, both of Fura's drinks were easy to love. They were like warm hugs on a rainy day, and we need more of that feeling with Manila's weather right now.
Stop #2: Jigger & Pony x OTO
null
Peanut Alexander | Photo by The Beat Asia
At OTO, Jigger & Pony flexed why they're amongst the Top 5 bars in Asia and in the world. We tried out the "Singa Sling" and "Peanut Alexander," the former is their take on the classic Singapore Sling cocktail, while the latter is a dessert in a glass.
Starting off with the "Singa Sling," a light but subtly lethal mix of Tanqueray No. 10, Cointreau, cherry, pineapple, and carbonated soda. It looked unassuming but went down like a summer sunset (that is, until you've had three of them, and the gin comes swinging). If you can imagine yourself watching the sun go down atop one of Singapore's stunning rooftop bars, this drink is right up there with you in that daydream.
The cherry note was upfront, clean, and the pineapple added a subtle acidity. Carbonation lifted the drink, while the Cointreau balanced the drink with a hint of bitterness. It reminds us of a cherry soda, but don't get us wrong, it's not a sugary bomb. It's delicate, intentional, and well-rounded.
Next up was the "Peanut Alexander," which reminds us of a creamy dessert. If that dessert comes with simmering rage. With the combination of Don Julio Blanco, salted peanuts, ube, cacao liqueur, fig, and cream, this drink reminded us of an upbeat, dance-worthy pop song hiding painful lyrics that catch you off guard, but still, you can't help but sing-scream to it anyway, cause it makes you feel "all the feels." The first song we thought of while drinking this? Paramore's "Hard Times," and we love it.
The Don Julio Blanco tequila gave the drink a strong backbone, softened by ube and fig. On the other hand, the bitter cacao and salty peanuts added more depth to the cocktail, as the finishing touch of cream rounded it all out. Comforting, while carrying hidden heat.
Stop #3: Mama Diam x Polilya

If Mama Diam's "Chai Tarik Brew" develops a cult following over the course of SingaPob 2025, we wouldn't be surprised. And we would be joining too. At Polilya, we wasted no time in ordering this drink we were fortunate enough to sample at the Media Launch the day before. Isn't it obvious that we loved it enough then to order it all over again?
Served in a retro milk can with a side of Biscoff biscuit, it felt more like a childhood memory than a cocktail. Even though it still packed a punch, the drink was still, at its core, nostalgia in a glass — or rather, in a can. Made with chai, brown sugar, bitters, and whisky, this was a complex, but oh-so-familiar sip that transported us directly to a small provision store in Prinsep Street.
Flavor-wise, the chai was king. Rich and spice-laden, but still, it managed to mesh well with the whisky. The brown sugar gave it a sweet depth, while the bitters kept it from turning into a sweet tea drink. It was a feat to balance strong, individual ingredients while delivering a soulful drink that keeps its heart. The Biscoff biscuit on the side added an additional touch of sweetness to the drink, allowing the drink to lean even heavier on the nostalgia.
All in all, this drink was a whole mood, evoking memories in people even if you're not a local Singaporean. In all honesty, it remains one of our personal favorites.
Stop #4: Night Hawk x ???
null
(Clockwise) Polite Provisions, Singing in Poblacion, and Lion 60 Sling | Photo by The Beat Asia
For this one, the venue is secret. But one hint is that it's near Polilya, which was perfect as it served as our next stop. To know the location, you'll need to visit at least two of the partner establishments. When you visit those bars or restaurants, make sure to approach one of the SingaPob representatives with your receipt proving that you ordered from their limited-time menu. They'll add a sticker to your wristband, and once you have at least two of those stickers, you'll be given a card showing the name and location of the stop where Night Hawk is residing for the weekend.
We went to the final location, and with our wristbands verified, we signed up real quick to join the raffle for a free trip to Singapore. Then it was time to check out Night Hawk's special menu for SingaPob 2025. We tried "Lion 60 Sling" and "Polite Provisions."
The former, "Lion 60 Sling," was a floral-forward beauty (with a literal flower on top): Tanqueray No. 10, clarified pineapple syrup, pear, cherry, citrus, and hibiscus soda. It looked great on Instagram, but that was only the cherry (pun intended) on top of a drink that tasted even better beyond its looks. It ended the night on a delicately sweet note.
"Polite Provisions," meanwhile, was anything but polite (in the best way possible). The drink blended together Tomato Don Julio Blanco, tomato mezcal, jalapeño syrup, citrus, and salt for a powerful, chaotic beast. It was spicy, savory, punchy — truly, a rollercoaster in a glass. The jalapeño hits you first, followed by the tomato's umami and then a salt-citrus combo that leaves you reeling. If, rather than a smooth, sweet way to end the night, you'd much prefer to go out with a bang, then "Polite Provisions" delivers.
Night Hawk also served bonus shots of vodka and tequila to patrons, cause why not? Even though the bar had no idea they were going to be the final destination of crawl, it was like they read our minds and pulled out all the stops to complete our crawl's vibe on a high.
SingaPob 2025 wasn't just a bar crawl. It's a borderless blend of cultures, cocktails, and culinary vibrance in a district that captures all of that energy and is capable of amping it up even further. Whether it was the elevated artistry of Malcolm Lee at Hapag or the chaotic brilliance of each award-winning bar slinging cocktails you'll dream of for years to come, each stop reminded us of Singapore's wildly diverse, ever-evolving F&B scene. So, gather your friends and take on the crawl!
And if you've conquered the crawl and can't help but long for more? Well, Singapore's just a short plane ride away. So, here's to hoping you'll win that free trip to Singapore!

Fractured relationships, woeful naiveté, and passionate infidelity. These are the pieces that “Kaliwaan” unravels — a hard-hitting, yet unexpectedly tender Filipino translation of Harold Pinter’s modern classic “Betrayal.” At its heart, the play revolves around the emotional remnants left by a seven-year affair between a woman and her husband’s best friend, pulling the audience into a world where intimacy is just as cruel as betrayal.
“Kaliwaan” stars three of Philippine theater’s finest actors — Missy Maramara as Emma, Ron Capinding as Robert, and Nor Domingo as Jerry.

Translated by Guelan Varela-Luarca, the production is helmed by internationally acclaimed director Loy Arcenas, Giancarlo Abrahan as Dramaturg, Charles Yee as Set Designer, Tata Tuviera as Costume Designer, Ninya Bedruz as Lighting Designer, Arvy Dimaculangan as Sound Designer, Jenny Jamora as Intimacy Director, and Zoë de Ocampo as Graphic Designer.
“Kaliwaan” will be staged for three weekends, from Aug. 22 to Sept. 7, 2025, at The Mirror Theater Studio, Makati City. The show will run for 90 minutes with no intermission, and is staged by Stages Production Specialists, Inc. and co-presented by MusicArtes, Inc.
The Beat Manila got to watch their intimate opening night last Aug. 21, 2025, and here’s what we took away from this stirring drama.
Intimacy in the Familiar
Unlike most stories that present a clean, straightforward line, ”Kaliwaan” walks backwards through time, piecing the fragments of a love undone back together to reveal how everything came to be. Told in a familiar tongue — with a storyline that touches the Filipino psyche’s enduring fascination with secrecy and passion — the play presents the characters in a more intimate, stripped-down form.
There’s an undeniable sense of comfort with the use of conversational Filipino as the play’s main language; it lends humility and softness to the characters in comparison to their high-brow professions, grounding them in a reality that audiences can instinctively recognize.
Translations can often feel like a gamble, especially when it doesn’t capture the essence of the original. But in “Kaliwaan,” Varela-Luarca’s adaptation cuts even deeper. The structure is as it was in the original — the names, the settings, the professions — but it’s in the used language that draws us closer, transforming a modern classic into something more familiar, closer to home.
However, if there’s one thing we were left wanting from this adaptation, it’s the fuller embrace of cultural elements. Why stop at love and infidelity — themes already familiar to Filipino audiences — and language, when the rest of the play could have followed suit, deepening the wounds left by the story.

A Beauty in the Exposed
Yet even without those cultural layers, “Kaliwaan” finds its spirit in what it strips away. The production thrives at its bareness — the silences between words, the palpable tensions in the air, the indignation held through gritted teeth. Here, the beauty of the story lies in its exposure of the fragile, the uncomfortable, and what makes these characters painfully human.
The stark simplicity of the set designed by Charles Yee magnifies this intimacy, creating a stage where emotions cannot hide. Every stare, every breath, every step is laid bare — not just for the characters to deal with, but also for the audience to confront. Instead of overwhelming elements, the audience is met with near emptiness, a space that echoes and amplifies the play’s resonance.
Raw Emotions and Silent Rage in the Face of Love
Betrayal can be done in numerous ways, yet “Kaliwaan” does so in such a quiet cruelty that lingers even as the lights dim. At the center of this barrage are the three characters, each navigating through their web of lies and love with vulnerability and restraint.
Missy Maramara, Nor Domingo, and Ron Capinding all share a chemistry that is both magnetic and uncomfortable — the kind that draws all your attention in even when everything is on the verge of collapse. Each pairing depicts Harold Pinter’s characters with such grace in the face of deceit and desire: Emma and Jerry’s hidden tenderness, Jerry and Robert’s fragile brotherhood, and Emma and Robert’s delicate marriage that all follow through as if they’re all painting a picture.

Nor Domingo was stellar in his portrayal of a man who is both knowingly ignorant and naïve to the consequences of his desires, while Missy Maramara delivered a moving portrait of a woman torn by passion and principle with grace and candor.
But it was Ron Capinding who truly commanded the stage from the moment he appeared until the very last. His portrayal of a man scorned and betrayed by the very people he cherished was captivating — every moment he stepped into the scene, the air in the room felt heavy. What made his performance unforgettable was not the explosive anger his character was owed, but in the fury he kept held — in his every pause, every silence, and every stare, the audience felt the full weight of a rage left unsaid.
null
Ron Capinding | Courtesy of Kaliwaan (Photographed by Kyle Venturillo)
Together, the performances by all three characters wove the tangled threads of “Kaliwaan” into something deeply human. The play was not just about betrayal, but how the fragile seams of love and pride unknowingly collide, quietly, passionately, and with consequence.
Final Thoughts
In the end, “Kaliwaan” lingers, creeping through the cracks of what was left unsaid. By unfolding its story in reverse, it holds a mirror up to the painful and messy truths we so often choose to hide. Love shouldn’t always have to be undone with a messy aftermath, but for many of us, that’s a reality we live in. “Kaliwaan” leans into the truth of this emotion, showing love in its most ardent, but also in its most human: messy, fragile, and unapologetically real.
Whether you’re a play aficionado or someone who is still trying to dip their feet into the world of Philippine theater, it’s a must-watch for anyone. If you’re also into watching shows that dabble in the messiness of love, then you shouldn’t miss out.
“Kaliwaan” has extended its shows until Sept. 7, 2025, at The Mirror Studio Theater in Poblacion, Makati City. Tickets are priced from P800 (Bronze), P950 (Silver), P1100 (Gold), and P1250 (Platinum). You may get your tickets here.

Once Upon a Time, renowned composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim dared to ask what happens next after “Happily Ever After,” which gave birth to one of the most celebrated musicals to have ever graced the theater scene.
“Into the Woods,” which first premiered on Broadway in 1987, masterfully intertwines the stories of several beloved fairytales, such as “Cinderella,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “Rapunzel,” with an original story about a Baker and his Wife who get entangled with a Witch to have a child. At its heart, the musical revolves around the power of wishes and the price that comes with pursuing them, weaving themes of morality, generational legacy, and the strength found in the community.
New theater collective, Theatre Group Asia (TGA), recently brought the award-winning musical to the Philippine stage, with Olivier and Tony Award-winner Lea Salonga leading an ensemble of remarkable, world-class talents. Filipino theater fans got the chance to be enchanted as the play opened this month at the Samsung Performing Arts theater, promising a few hours of rich music, engaging storytelling, and a whole lot of fun and chaos through the woods.
Into the Woods of Shadows and Song
For the uninitiated, “Into the Woods” is a fairytale retelling that combines the original Brothers Grimm tales with an original plotline revolving around a Baker and his Wife.
Act One follows the main characters on their journey into the woods to pursue their own wishes, with Cinderella wanting to go to the ball, Jack wanting his cow to give milk, Little Red wanting bread for her grandmother, Rapunzel longing to be set free from her tower, and the Baker and his Wife wishing to have a child. The stories intertwine due to the couple who embark on a quest to find four things under the direction of a Witch who promised to lift the curse that has kept their family tree barren, having cast it on his father for stealing vegetables and the magic beans from her garden years before. As compensation, the Witch took their daughter, Rapunzel, whom she raised in a tower. So yes, the Baker and Rapunzel (played by Joreen Bautista) are actually related, which added depth to the characters’ relationships.
The Philippine production of “Into the Woods” retells Sondheim’s intriguing fairytale with utmost reverence, putting together a cast of amazing talents to bring his music and characters to life.
Lea Salonga dazzled as the witch, a complex character who is both villain and protective guardian — a victim and also enabler of dark intentions. Lea has long been renowned for her beautiful singing voice and acting chops, and this show only proved that. Her performance stood out from the rest, causing us to sit a little straighter in our seats whenever she’s on stage. More than an antagonist, the Witch is also the catalyst that moves the story forward, which Lea performed magnificently, from her wrinkly old hag version to the transformed enchantress. There’s no doubt that the villain brings magic into these fairy tales.
Filipino pop singer-songwriter Nyoy Volante surprised us as he took on the role of the Baker, showcasing not only his impressive singing voice but also his excellent acting skills. He’s complemented by his real-life wife and seasoned theater actress Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante, whose clear tone and high-powered mezzo soprano gave us chills, especially when she performed her solo, “Moments in the Woods.” The two of them together gave just the right amount of humor, heart, and agony.
The August production is no doubt the hottest ticket of 2025 and for good reason, considering they’ve also cast some seasoned Broadway stars. Apart from Lea, Arielle Jacobs graced the stage as Cinderella, portraying the role with heartfelt innocence and fierce independence. It’s a character you couldn’t help but root for, her beautiful, clear soprano reminiscent of a Disney princess, making her performance easily believable.

Another notable performance was from Josh Dela Cruz, who played a double role as the Prince and the Wolf and was animatedly gorgeous on stage. His movements showed varying expressions, and his comedic interventions were always on point. He definitely embodied charming with a side of humor. Together with his stage brother Mark Bautista, who played Rapunzel’s prince, their “Agony” number was comedic, but we felt it fell a little flat on chemistry and lacked the desperation present in previous reiterations.
Teetin Villanueva and Nick Chien’s Little Red Riding Hood and Jack brought the youthful spirit to the show, while seeing Eugene Domingo (Jack’s Mother) in an English-language production was a rare treat and made us smile all the way through her performance.
Overall, the cast was outstanding and gave us exactly what one would expect from a world-class production. Music-wise, it was also exemplary. Sondheim’s music has always been rich and engaging, and with the baton of Maestro Gerard Salonga, he conducted the orchestra in such a way that it fully realized the composer's vision.
Local Magic in a Global Fairytale
The production’s most striking reinterpretation of Sondheim’s classic musical comes from its subtle yet intentional Filipino touches, which are mostly seen through its visual storytelling.
Set with a colonial-era architecture-inspired fixed set, it turned the story’s village into Filipino or Spanish ancestral houses. Props and costume designs also accompanied this, such as the kalesa (carriage) and the textiles and fabrics worn by the cast, which are reported to have all been made with local materials and woven by native craftsmen.
The production’s artistic director, Clint Ramos, wanted the Filipino identity to become part of the visual language, which we believed they succeeded in — creating a world on stage that looks and feels Filipino.
Although the artistic vision for the set was ambitious and unique, we felt it did little to move the story forward. The forest was quite plain, and the transition from forest to palace or to the village was often the same. We believed more could’ve been done to separate these venues, like an added pillar or backdrop, without obscuring the main steps of the stage.
The lighting, although it showcased a variety of colors and shades that expressed emotions of each scene, lacked that sinister aura that should’ve been present when one is lost in the woods, especially in the second act, which was set there entirely.
The costumes were remarkable, however, and were definitely one of the highlights of the show. Renowned designers Rajo Laurel and Raven Ong worked collaboratively on the Witch’s costume, which was one of the most standout looks of the show. The designers created a gown inspired by the anahaw leaf with layered green and aqua pleats that shimmered and danced against the light. Lea came out of this gown after her transformation in Act One, and we were in awe at how lovely it translated on stage — expressing beauty, grandeur, and rebirth, but with a touch of villainy as green is often the color associated with evil.
Her second dress was also noteworthy, as the actress switched up for a darker green gown embroidered with intricate leaves, which, according to Rajo in an interview with Preview magazine, was inspired by the vegetables in the “Bahay Kubo” song. They also created two capes for this dress, completing the villain look.
Other standout costume pieces included Cinderella’s peasant dress and ball gowns, which had Filipiniana butterfly sleeves, the princes’ Maguindanao Inaul royal ensembles, and the Wolf’s tattoos that resembled those of a Visayan warrior.

Overall, “Into the Woods” succeeded in blending a global musical force with local artistry, creating a unique experience for theater fans and casual theatergoers alike.Watching this cast perform was such a treat, and while the set design had its setbacks, it didn’t take away the fact that it was a spectacular show worth buying a seat for.
Magical, thought-provoking, and highly entertaining, TGA’s first musical production deserves a standing ovation, and we simply can’t wait to see more world-class productions adapted onto local stages.
“Into the Woods” is now playing at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati City and will run until the end of August.
