Taiwan’s SOMA Tea Founder Jeremy Lo on Hyatt Centric Collaboration
In a first-ever crossover for Taiwan’s “No. 1 Milk Tea” SOMA and a Hong Kong brand, Hyatt Centric Victoria Harbour Hong Kong is hosting an exclusive pop-up Boba Happy Hour at The Farmhouse Deli. We were fortunate to be invited to the collaboration launch and sample the four delicious drinks SOMA developed alongside The Farmhouse team, including a delicious alcoholic bubble tea!
At the launch event, Jeremy Lo, the Founder of SOMA Tea & Mocktail, also sat down with The Beat Hong Kong to dive into the pop-up, the story behind his new drinks, and the genuine passion for tea he exudes in every word he shares. The drinks are thoughtfully crafted, fusing the art of Taiwanese bubble tea and traditional Hong Kong flavors with high-quality ingredients.
SOMA applies the essence of French culinary art in their hand-shaken drinks and operations. Jeremy’s warmth and generosity mirror the brands values of vibrancy and innovation, resulting in the brand’s Taiwan’s “No. 1 Milk Tea” win at the 2019 Taiwan Milk Tea Festival.
Read on to learn about how you can enjoy a taste of Taiwan in the heart of North Point, the joys of sharing tea, and Jeremy’s tips for your next Taiwan trip!
What was the inspiration behind your collaboration with The Farmhouse?
Actually, it started out at The Farmhouse, their staff had visited Taiwan and saw our tea. And as you know, Hyatt Centric really focuses on combining [other region’s] local cuisines and local culture.
I'm a big fan of Hong Kong and I used to come here I was a kid. So actually a lot of people in Taiwan, said that when they tried our milk tea, they sensed a kind of Hong Kong style feeling in the product itself. So when Hyatt approached me, I thought this is a great opportunity and a great partner to do a pop-up here.
And the reason this is the first time we came out [of Taiwan for a collaboration] is because it's really hard to go outside of Taiwan, or even just outside Taipei, [as] there are so many things we can’t control, especially water issues, because different areas have different water.
How did you choose the four different flavors that you have for this collaboration?
Firstly, original [HK style milk tea] is definitely something we want to show, and for SOMA, everything starts with the base tea and then we do variations.
Sesame, is something that I think is very related to Hong Kong in a way, they have this sweet sesame black soup, which is also one of my favorites as well. It's something that not many people use with milk tea, so we want to bring it to Hong Kong.
For Yuen Yeung, it doesn't get more Hong Kong than that. Personally, I'm a big fan and when I go to cha chaan tengs [local restaurants] it’s something I always order.
And finally VSOP, a lot of people when we when they hear about using branding inside milk tea, they think a cocktail, but for us, the alcohol itself has so many unique flavors that you don't really show in other drinks. And we want to really incorporate that, but without showing it as an alcohol [focused] drink. We want to present it as to enjoy the flavor and the scent, without having a punch drinking [experience like with] cocktails or really hard alcohol.
Do you have a favorite drink from this collection?
My personal favorite is actually VSOP.
For people who want to go to Taiwan to visit SOMA in person, do you have a unique flavor or drink to recommend to first timers?
There's one — we call it the Yamazaki Milk Tea we used Taiwan local mountain tea to make more of a lighter milk tea and we added Japanese whiskey to it to show the flavor without the burn.
Another one is actually something so simple, it's just lemon with mountain tea. It's a very generic flavor, you see it everywhere, but we didn't want people to drink the lemon and the tea, we wanted to make it a combination, a flavor in itself. It’s extremely refreshing and although it's simple, it's very long lasting. That one is actually one of my favorite drinks in SOMA as well.
After successfully launching your pop-up at Hyatt Centric, would you consider expanding to Hong Kong in the future?
We're definitely looking into it, and for us, the key issue is actually finding the right partner, because for us and milk tea [specifically], to execute operations here, we need a long kind of training [process] and a lot of details, so finding the right partner to collaborate on this, to us is the key and the most important thing if we ever had a chance to come to Hong Kong.
SOMA's exclusive collaborative drinks are available now until Sept. 18th at Hyatt Centric Victoria Harbour Hong Kong.
