The Top Indian Restaurants You Should Try in Hong Kong

It seems that Hong Kong simply cannot get enough of Indian food. We are lustful for cheap curries hidden in buildings, takeaway snacks we can munch on the road, Michelin-starred fine dining treats, and the spice that kicks in our body every time we munch.

To celebrate the plentiful supply of fantastic Indian restaurants in the city, we have rounded up our favourite restaurants serving up Hong Kong’s best Indian food, catering to every budget and diet.

New Punjab Club

The world’s first Michelin-starred Punjab restaurant New Punjab Club located on Wyndham Street is a verifiable must for Indian cuisine lovers to explore the rich flavours of the Punjab region sandwiched in between India and Pakistan. Expect authentic post-colonial Punjabi dishes at this Soho restaurant with high-class service.

To sample chef Mitra and Sidhu’s new creations and the finest of New Punjab Club, we recommend ordering the Tamatar Ki Chaat (HK$198), Malai Tikka (HK$248), Tandoori Batair (HK$208), Mughal Room Makhani (HK$278), Kashmiri Gosht Pulao (HK$428), and Mango Phirnee (HK$128).

Location: New Punjab Club, World Wide Commercial Building, 34 Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong, +852 2368 1223

Chutney

Also on Wyndham Street, known for its powerful hold of the city’s best Indian diners, is Chutney Tandoor House, which houses an impressive menu importing the recipes of India’s multifield coloured regions and cuisines indigenous to specific locales. The independent restaurant is led by chef Virender Kumar, curating a familiar palate of north Indian cured meat, curries, and vegetable dishes using the restaurant’s two authentic tandoors.

We highly recommend ordering the Chutney Butter Chicken (HK$198) to sample Hong Kong’s best butter chicken curry, Keema Pav (HK$188), Hariyali Fish Tikka (HK$228), Malai Paneer Tikka (HK$188), Rajasthani Laal Maas (HK$208), and a couple Tandoori Rotis (HK$30) to soak up floating juices.

Location: Chutney Tandoor House, 4/F, Carfield Commercial Building, 77 Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong, +852 2330 0027

VEDA

Hong Kong’s first vegetarian hotel venue, VEDA commits to encourage casual meat eaters to explore powerful flavours made with Indian spices and ingredients in plates that forgo meat protein but not flavour. Its vibrant dishes, both in colour and flavour profiles, prove that vegetables have the power to create robust umami flavours in absence of meaty proteins.

For the full experience at VEDA, order Silk Route Momos (HK$98), Samosa Chaat (HK$118), Black Dhal (HK$148), Khao Suey (HK$118), and Chai Masam Burnt Cheesecake (HK$95) to share with a trusted foodie companion.

Location: VEDA, 2 Arbuthnot Road, Central, Hong Kong, +852 3755 3067

Bengal Brothers

Inspired by the West Bengal creation of the kati roll, Bengal Brothers is the first quick pit-stop diner in Hong Kong to ingratiate oneself with the flaky and buttery streetside snack, typically filled with skewer-roasted kebab meats hugged in paratha bread.

If you swing by its cool Wan Chai venue, we highly suggest you order the BB Classic Roll (HK$98), Achaari Paneer Roll (HK$88), or Tamil Pepper Beef bowl (HK$108) for mains, and Sweet Potato chaat (HK$55) and Kerala Fried Chicken (HK$60).

Location: Bengal Brothers, G/F, 6 Johnston Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Bismillah Kebab House

Housed inside the famous Chungking Mansions, Bismillah Fried Chicken, BFC for short, is Hong Kong’s rivalling answer to Kentucky Fried Chicken, but with an Indian-cum-Turkish twist. It sells succulent grilled beef, chicken, lamb, and cod fish out of its first-floor store and has done so for 27 years. The store regularly tops lists for the Mansions’ top easy eats for lunch and early dinner.

We highly recommend BFC’s Tandoori fish with chips (HK$110), chicken with rice (HK$50), chicken karai curry (HK$120), and its classic BFC special, a simple dish of chicken with chips for just HK$60.

Location: Bismillah Kebab House, Shop 75, 1/F, Chungking Mansions, 36-44 Nathan Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, +852 2722 5733

From an extensive list of chaats, starters, street food nibbles, and tandoor plates, Chaiwala is armed to serve every necessity and liking.

Its affordable weekday lunch sets starting from HK$149 are worth a check-out, whilst the Aloo Tikka Chaat (HK$110), Bombay Fried Chicken (HK$100), Tandoori Hari Gobi (HK$140), Dal Maharani (HK$120), Old Delhi Butter Chicken (HK$150), and Mutton Biryani (HK$165) are what Chaiwala does best!

CHAAT

Led by famed restaurateur and chef Manav Tuli, Michelin-starred CHAAT joins the traditions of classic Indian street food with slow-cooked tandoor classic plates to the fine dining scene in Hong Kong. The Tsim Sha Tsui-based restaurant occupies three tandoors and a dedicated storeroom for spices to curate some of the finest Indian dishes found in the city.

For the real Michelin Star experience, we recommend sitting down for the tasting menu (HK$988 PP), consisting of sumptuous plates of raj kachori, baked samosa with jackfruit meat, tandoori wagyu beef cheek, Old Delhi butter chicken, himachali mahani, prawn pulao, boondi raiata, garlic naan, spice-infused aged basmati rice, and masala chai creme brule.
