KINO/24 German Film Festival Begins in Hong Kong This October

Cinephiles and German film lovers sit tight! This October, the Goethe Institut is presenting the 26th edition of the German Film Festival, KINO/24, soon to be shown across four venues in Hong Kong.
Spanning ten days from 10-20 October 2024, this autumn program will highlight contemporary works by talented, established. and emerging directors from Germany and the chance to discuss their films with them face to face.
Films in the festival include Thomas Aslan’s latest film Scorched Earth, which was featured in Berlinale 2024 program, Chris Kraus’ 15 Years, and Jochen Hick’s documentary Queer Exile Berlin, which follows six young queer people from different parts of the world who have relocated to Berlin, some out of necessity, some by choice.
Make sure to stay after the screening of Queer Exile Berlin, as Jochen Hick will be answering audience questions virtually via video chat.

Kicking off the festival is Beyond the Blue Border, directed by Sarah Neumann, which examines the quest for freedom and absurdities of life under East German rule in 1989.
Other films include EVERY YOU EVERY ME by Michael Fetter Nathansky, and Sara Summa’s European road movie Arthur & Diana. Summa will also be attending both screenings of Arthur & Diana, so don’t miss the chance to ask her your burning questions after the screening!
This year, KINO is extending beyond Germany to include German-language films, such as 8 DAYS IN AUGUST (Samuel Perriard) and Andrea Gets Divorce, by Austrian comedian Josef Hader. Hader’s film will be presented in collaboration with the Austrian Consulate General Hong Kong.

This year, KINO is paying tribute to Oscar-nominated German actress Sandra Hüller, whose recent performances in Anatomy of a Fall and Zone of Interest have put her on the map as one of the leading actresses internationally in contemporary cinema. This Actress in Focus spotlight will feature five films that Hüller has starred in, such as Zone of Interest, Toni Erdmann, Exile, and In the Aisles.
Ticket prices for the afternoon and evening showings vary by venue: HKD$85 at Hong Kong Arts Centre in Wan Chai, HKD$95 at both Broadway Cinematheque in Yau Ma Tei and Premiere Elements in Kowloon, and HKD$70 at Hong Kong Film Archive in Sai Wan Ho. You can buy tickets here.
