Get Your Festive Fix with The Matcha Tokyo PH's Holiday Offerings

Care for a little something green for dessert? One of our favorite matcha hotspots just launched new traditional Japanese sweets and flavors that are sure to make this Christmas extra joyful!
This holiday season, The Match Tokyo, known for its 100% organic matcha brews, features a classic Japanese treat and delightful new drink flavors. Introducing the Warabi Mochi, a Japanese confection that’s every bit as yummy as your regular mochi but with a more jelly-like texture. This unique dessert is also featured in two new drinks blended with their signature matcha flavor.
The Beat Manila visited their newest branch at Opus Mall to get a taste of their seasonal delights and we’re highlighting all the offerings that you should try on your next visit!
A Christmasy Confection: The Warabi Mochi
Everyone loves mochi. This traditional Japanese dessert made from glutinous rice has become a popular dessert among Filipinos, probably because this sticky rice treat is similar to some of our fave local snacks like the Biko and Sapin-Sapin or even the beloved Chinese staples Buchi and Tikoy, which you can get all-year-round.
If you haven’t heard of Warabi Mochi don’t worry, you’re not alone. Warabi Mochi — or simply warabi — is a dessert made of bracken starch dusted with nutty roasted soybean flour and drizzled with sweet kuromitsu syrup (black sugar syrup). Japan has many types of “mochi” but unlike the typical mochi made from rice, the warabi has a more jelly — almost slime-like — texture. It’s chewy, but it dissolves pretty quickly so it literally melts in your mouth! You won’t have to worry about this one getting stuck in your teeth, but it does make you finish your dessert a little bit faster.
Warabi is one of the lesser-known types of mochi outside of Japan but now you can try them at The Matcha Tokyo because the café is currently featuring this unique flavor in three new desserts!

The Kinako Warabi Mochi is a warabi coated in kinako (roasted soybean flour) powder and served with cookie butter sauce and brown sugar syrup on the side. This dessert has a pretty beige color like sand and is the closest to the original warabi flavor.
The Matcha Kinako Warabi Mochi, on the other hand, is dusted with matcha kinako powder, adding that familiar bright and fresh matcha taste. You can add more of that flavor by dipping it in the matcha and brown sugar syrup it’s served with on the side.
If you want something a little bit sweeter, the Chocolate Warabi Mochi is coated with cocoa powder and served with a gooey chocolate sauce and brown sugar syrup on the side.

All three desserts are equally unique and good, but if we were to choose a favorite, the Kinako Warabi Mochi stood out due to its nutty and cookie flavor. We especially loved how it tasted much like a Biscoff dessert as the cookie butter sauce was akin to sweet caramel. You can get these delightful confections for P295. Can’t get enough of its sweet dips? Because trust us, you’re going to want more. Additional sauces are at P35 each.
Sip Into the Season: Featured Warabi and Minty Drinks
If Spring brings in Sakura flavors, this winter season, The Matcha Tokyo café is highlighting Warabimochi-inspired beverages and mint flavors that give the holidays a refreshing take.
The Iced Warabi Matcha Latte is your regular rich matcha latte infused with plain warabimochi, while the Iced Kinako Warabi Latte is made from soybean powder and kinako warabimochi. Visually, these two drinks are more than pretty to be on your IG feeds, with their green and brown color combo reminiscent of sprawling grassy plains. There’s just something about seeing them that instantly makes you feel relaxed.

Taste-wise, we liked the Iced Warabi Matcha Latte more given it was on the sweeter side and you can really taste the rich matcha, while the Kinako Warabi Latte had a more muted taste. It’s still refreshing though, like milk tea without the added sugar. Depending on your preferences, both drinks have their distinct flavors and have warabimochi at the bottom, which we thought was a delightful addition that made us think of tapioca balls. You can get both drinks at P280.

The Matcha Tokyo also launched two minty drinks for the holiday season. The Matcha Mint Frozen Latte (P280) is for peppermint lovers, a drink topped with snow-white whipped cream and sprinkled with dried cranberries and a side of matcha sauce. Pour the matcha sauce over the cream to create your own Christmas tree! This drink was indeed refreshing and almost too pretty to consume! It was as if Mt. Fuji got a Christmas makeover.
If you’re looking for something warm perfect for the cozy weather, the Hot Matcha Mint Latte (P260) provides that familiar peppermint flavor we all know and love, blended with their signature rich matcha and topped with some dried, scarlet cranberries. Safe to say, if you’re a mint lover, you better head on over to The Matcha Tokyo and get your fix today!

The new holiday lineup is available at all The Matcha Tokyo branches in the metro: Mitsukoshi Mall, Gateway 2, Opus Mall, Ayala Malls Veris North, Parqal, and Robinsons Magnolia.
