Starbucks PH Supports Youth Education Through Community Store

In Maysilo Circle, Mandaluyong City, Starbucks Philippines has opened its doors to more than just coffee lovers. The global coffee chain's second community store in the Philippines is serving up a fresh blend of social responsibility and literacy promotion. Good news is, you can help! For every cup of coffee you buy, a portion is contributed to youth education and community development.
This new Starbucks Community Store, which opened its doors this August, builds upon the success of the company's first community store in Abad Santos, Tondo, launched in September 2023. While both stores share the core mission of supporting youth education, the Maysilo Circle branch features a key difference that kids will love.
"We continue to evolve the concept and see how we can further our advocacy for youth empowerment. This idea really came about through our partnership with Mano Amiga," Jamie Silva, Starbucks Philippines Senior Manager for Marketing, Digital Customer Experience, and Loyalty, explained.

What’s new? For one, the Maysilo Circle branch is home to Starbucks Philippines' first Community Library. This cozy reading nook is designed to foster a love for reading among young visitors, offering a diverse collection of books that showcase Filipino values and experiences alongside international titles.
"We've identified that growing the love for books at an early age is what really helps a child in its literacy," Jamie noted. "This concept is really just trying to get the community more involved in raising that awareness."
The carefully curated book selection reflects a conscious effort to promote Filipino literature and culture. Silva highlighted, "Topics are largely around Filipino values and cultures because a large portion of the collection [are books] written by Filipinos, by Filipino authors and illustrators. But we also had to add in a few international titles."
This focus on literacy aligns with Starbucks Philippines' partnership with Mano Amiga, an organization dedicated to enhancing education for children from low-income communities.
“We are thrilled to work with Mano Amiga for our second Community Store, as their mission aligns with our values and commitment to advancing youth education in the communities we serve,” Starbucks Philippines President Noey Lopez said. “Through this meaningful partnership, we are helping to create a brighter future for the Filipino youth.”

Through this collaboration, Starbucks will launch two programs in October 2024: Raising Readers and Raising Leaders. “Raising Readers” aims to “promote literacy through storytelling, arts and crafts, and nutritious meals.” Meanwhile, “Raising Leaders” offers “leadership training, life skills workshops, scholarships, and school placement support.” Both initiatives will benefit underprivileged youth at Nayon ng Kabataan in the Welfareville community of Mandaluyong City.
Beyond these programs, a portion of the proceeds from the Maysilo Circle Community Store will directly support Mano Amiga's efforts. Jamie emphasized the importance of this model: "It just means that for every cup you purchase, there is a portion of that sale that actually benefits the community."
The community store concept goes beyond mere aesthetics. While the store features a custom mural by Manila-based artist Tara Soriano titled "Of Books and Beans," its true distinction lies in its impact on the local community.
Jamie explained, "Aesthetically, it starts with a doorknob. But more important than the visuals, it's really the portion of sales that comes from this store, that directly benefits the community through our partner NGO."
This approach not only supports local initiatives but also encourages customer involvement. "It's also a great way of getting the community involved," Jamie added. "It's something that we believe in and we're looking to replicate going forward to support these community stores."

Starbucks Philippines' commitment to community service extends beyond its community stores. The company has been actively involved in various social impact programs across the country. Through its FoodShare program, launched in 2022 in partnership with Grab and the Philippine FoodBank Foundation, Starbucks has donated over 1.3 million food items nationwide.
Starting October 2024, select Starbucks stores in Mandaluyong will donate rescuable food directly to the Welfareville community. Additionally, Starbucks Philippines is collaborating with Gawad Kalinga to bring Kusina ng Kalinga+ to Welfareville, an initiative that empowers local parent volunteers to prepare nutritious meals for children in public schools.
"We've been doing food share for more than two years," Jamie shared. "We've been in partnership with Gawad Kalinga for two years as well. We've already prepared more than 236,000 meals."

The company's efforts extend to environmental initiatives as well. In partnership with Planet Water, Starbucks has built five aqua towers providing safe drinking water for children in communities outside Metro Manila.
Jamie also highlighted Starbucks' long-standing partnership with Hope in a Bottle. "For many years, we've been partnering with Hope. Every time you buy a certain amount of Hope Bottles, it actually sponsors classrooms. We also have five classrooms already that [were built] through the sales of Hope in a Bottle."
As Starbucks Philippines continues to expand its community-focused initiatives, the company is exploring ways to further engage customers in these efforts. Jamie mentioned the possibility of introducing community service and volunteer opportunities for customers who want to make a positive impact.
The Maysilo Circle Community Store represents a significant step in Starbucks Philippines' ongoing commitment to social responsibility and community development. Fans of their brews should check out this unique Starbucks branch to encourage your kids to read, admire Tara's mural, and most importantly, invest in the future of the community.
