It’s Here! Citybus Hong Kong Drives the First Hydrogen Bus on the Island
Local bus company Citybus Hong Kong has successfully rolled in the first hydrogen bus on Hong Kong island. With a total of five units, the hydrogen buses are currently operating on Citybus route 20.
This marks a huge step towards sustainable and green living, as the bus emits nothing but water.
It also boasts advantages over the typical diesel and electric buses as the hydrogen bus only takes 10 to 15 minutes to charge for a 400-kilometre journey. It also has a compact battery, which allows enough passenger space, just like a diesel bus, and ensures a lower risk of accidents.
Although the bus company has admitted that there’s still some work needed to sustain the hydrogen buses, including obtaining green hydrogen as Hong Kong still relies on grey hydrogen from natural gas or methane, hydrogen buses are also way more expensive to produce compared to electric buses, and there are concerns about leakages.
Currently, passengers can hop on these buses only on bus route 20, but Citybus plans to expand it to 20A and 22M routes after its initial phase.
