Tony Leung and Andy Lau Join Forces for New Crime Movie, ‘The Goldfinger’

The Hong Kong cinema industry is buzzing with excitement as Tony Leung and Andy Lau reunite for the first time since the release of “Infernal Affairs III” with the highly anticipated 2023 crime thriller "The Goldfinger." Directed and written by Felix Chong, who also helmed the Infernal Affairs trilogy, the movie is set for release on Dec. 30.

Set primarily in the 1980s, "The Goldfinger" is a crime drama that follows the rise and fall of a Hong Kong conglomerate called Jiali Group and its chairman Cheng Yi-yan, portrayed by Leung, who undergoes a 15-year investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. Lau will play as an ICAC investigator.

The plot is reportedly based on the 1980s Carrian Group scandal — a multibillion-dollar corporation that fell out of grace several years after its rapid expansion.

Leung, who made his Hollywood debut in "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" last year to critical acclaim, returns to Hong Kong cinema after four years. The roles of good and bad guy will be reversed this time around, with Leung playing as the founder of a criminal conglomerate and Lau as an ICAC investigator. The movie also stars some of the biggest names in Hong Kong entertainment, including Simon Yam and Charlene Choi.

The partnership between Leung and Lau dates back to 1984, when they were seen on-screen in "The Duke of Mount Deer."

With a production budget of HK$350 million, "The Goldfinger" is one of the most expensive films made in Hong Kong cinema. Fans of Hong Kong cinema won't want to miss this crime thriller, which promises to be one of the biggest hits of 2023.
