Hi Jessie! Can you give us a brief introduction about yourself?
Hey! I’m Jessie Ric, 24, a singer-songwriter from Baguio City, Philippines. Also, a chronically frustrated law student. Right now, I feel grateful and am truly enjoying a wonderful phase of my life pursuing my love for music!
When did you begin liking music? What ignited your passion for the craft?
When I was a kid, my mom used to own a portable cassette radio that played in our home 24/7. That constant stream of music became my early exposure to music, and since then, listening to music and its different genres has become part of my everyday routine.
I’ve always wanted to make music since I was 14. Listening to my early music influences like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Kesha was a big part of me dreaming to become a pop artist. Watching how they moved people with their art inspired me to dream of doing the same, and that passion has grown stronger over the years.
You made your debut with the track ‘Slow Control.’ How was it making this song, and how did it feel to be able to unveil your music to the world for the first time?
Making “Slow Control” was both exciting and nerve-wracking. Honestly, I had been delaying my debut for a while because of shyness and the fear that people wouldn’t like it or that I’d have to conform to trends just to fit in. It was a mental battle of wanting to stay true to myself but also feeling the pressure of what’s popular out there, but when I finally decided to release the track, it felt surreal — like a piece of me was out there in the world for everyone to experience.
I felt vulnerable but also proud, thanks to my producer, Charles, for letting me share my story and sound in my own terms and ways and reminding me that I am finally stepping into who I am meant to be. Debuting as an artist was so far the biggest step I’ve made in my life.
You also have a new single! Can you tell us what ‘Rooting’ is about?
Rooting is my second single for my upcoming debut EP, “Self-Study,” which I describe as the core of the mini album. It’s about finding strength and support within ourselves, capturing the essence of being grounded in life’s biggest challenges and obstacles. The song also reflects on the struggle of staying rooted when life feels unstable, drawing inspiration from the turbulence of my early 20s. It’s a powerful reminder of resilience, self-reliance, and the importance of inner strength during times of uncertainty.
You'll also be releasing your very first EP, ‘Self-Study,’ on Nov. 15. What was the inspiration behind this album? Any behind-the-scenes stories you'd love to share with us?
The inspiration behind “Self-Study” came from a very personal place, deeply tied to my childhood dream of becoming an artist. I’ve always wanted to express myself through music, and this EP is my way of honoring that dream, a sign of a new beginning for me. It’s about embracing who I’ve always wanted to be while reflecting on the lessons and growth I’ve experienced in my teenage years and now in my early 20s.
The best behind-the-scenes moment for me was being in the studio with my producer Charles during our recording sessions. Those moments of connection, filled with “Aha!” and “Yes!” moments, were truly special. It felt amazing to collaborate and see the songs come to life, often leading to breakthroughs that shaped the sound of the EP.
What’s your favorite track in the album, and why?
Every track on “Self-Study” is unique sonically, each offering a different vibe and message. However, if I had to choose one, it would probably be “Rooting,” which [was released] on Oct. 25. This song really resonates with me because it encapsulates the themes of growth and self-discovery that are central to the EP, making it a personal favorite. But I also believe that the unreleased songs from the EP are the ones to watch for. They hold a special magic that I can’t wait to share!
What do you think is the most challenging part of making music and being in the industry?
I think connecting with people can definitely be one of the toughest challenges in the music industry. Finding the right audience often takes time and effort, and it can feel overwhelming, especially as an up-and-coming artist trying to reach out and make genuine connections. Additionally, I think the social media landscape also plays a huge role in promoting music, which gives me anxiety in creating content, but I believe everything takes time; it’s possible to create a meaningful connection with the right people who resonate with your music.
Since you are new to the music scene, is there a particular path that you’d want to take/genre you’d want to explore?
I really want to carve my own unique path in the music industry. I’m excited to explore different genres without placing limits on my creativity. With queer artists starting to take the scene in OPM (Original Pinoy Music), it feels like a pivotal time for more diverse voices to emerge in music. Every artist has their own story. I aim to express myself in ways that set me apart, bringing something fresh to the table.
Who are your greatest inspirations in the music industry, and how did they shape your own craft?
One of my greatest inspirations in the music industry is SB19. When I started making music, it was their music and their journey as an artist that really resonated with me and played a huge role in my decision to step out of my comfort zone and pursue my music career. Their ability to connect with fans and express their authentic selves through music encouraged me to embrace my own creativity and share my story. They opened a whole new door for aspiring artists, showing that with passion, perseverance, and patience, we can break boundaries and succeed. Watching them thrive has truly inspired me to pursue my dreams in this industry.
If you were given the chance to collaborate with another artist, who would it be and why?
I would definitely choose SB19 on my top list; they have been a significant inspiration for me since they debuted as a group. On an international level, I would love to work with Tyla. Her fresh sound and dynamic approach to music perfectly align with my desire to explore different genres.
You shared previously that you made your very first song when you were 14. What would you like to say now to 14-year-old Jessie?
I wanted to thank him for choosing to follow his dream and risking it all, that his courage to express himself through music and to start this journey at such a young age has laid the foundation for everything that I am today. I want to tell the 14-year-old me that every step, no matter how small, is part of the journey. Keep dreaming big, embrace uniqueness, and never lose sight of the burning passion to become the next BIG THING in the industry. I’m proud of him.
What’s next for Jessie Ric? Any gigs, shows, or music we should be looking forward to from you soon?
I’m so excited to release my debut EP, "Self-Study,” which will be available [on Nov. 15]. I’ve prepared incredible visuals for people to experience my own world of music. I can’t wait to hit the stage and do live shows too. Stay tuned!
2025 is going to be an incredible year for me and for my music. It’s going to be a journey, and I hope you can join me!
