Women who don’t give up until the end, who don’t let their colour and status define them nor believe they can excel in a male-dominated society — there are many types of women worth celebrating. As we enter Women’s Month this March, one way to find inspiration and feel empowered is by watching female leads do their thing (and be good at it). Here are some movies and series you can watch on Netflix!

‘Unbelievable’ (2019)

“Even with people that you can trust, if the truth is inconvenient, they don’t believe it.”

Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape” written by Ken Armstrong and T. Christian Miller, and their 2018 book “A False Report,” “Unbelievable” is a true crime mini-series about a string of rape cases in Colorado and Washington State. It follows the story of Marie Adler, a teenage sexual assault survivor who was accused of lying about being raped, and two female detectives who are out to uncover the truth after investigating eerily similar attacks.

Starring Toni Collette, Merritt Wever, and Kaitlyn Dever, this true-to-life drama series was nominated for the Emmy and Golden Globe awards.

‘The Queen’s Gambit’ (2020)

“Chess can also be beautiful.”

Based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis, “The Queen’s Gambit” is a coming-of-age drama mini-series that follows the story of a young girl named Elizabeth Harmon. Orphaned at a young age, she discovers and reveals her talent in the male-dominated sport of chess. She begins her journey to become the world’s greatest chess player while battling addiction.

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Bill Camp, the drama series won multiple awards, including 11 Emmy Awards and Golden Globes awards for Best Limited Series and Best Actress.

‘Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker’ (2020)

“Hair is beauty. Hair is power.”

Based on the biography “On Her Own Ground” by A'Lelia Bundles, the TV drama is — as obviously stated — inspired by the life of Madam C.J. Walker, an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist who was recorded as the first female self-made millionaire in the United States by the Guinness Book of World Records. The series depict the story of a Louisiana-born washerwoman and how she made her fortune through developing a line of cosmetics and hair care products geared to black women.

Starring Octavia Spencer, Tiffany Haddish, and Carmen Ejogo, the drama series received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Spencer’s portrayal of Madam C.J. Walker.

‘Warrior Nun’ (2020)

“F*cks given? Nun.”

Based on the comic book character Warrior Nun Areala by Ben Dunn, “Warrior Nun” is a fantasy drama series about 19-year-old Ava Silva who wakes up in a morgue and discovers that she gained superpowers along with a divine artifact embedded in her back. She later finds that she’s now part of an ancient secret sect of demon-hunting nuns called The Order of the Cruciform.

Starring Portuguese actress Alba Baptista, Thekla Reuten, and Lorena Andrea, this action-packed series marks Baptista’s English-language debut. A second season was released on Nov. 10, 2022.

‘Enola Holmes’ (2020)

“Perhaps it’s the world that needs changing.”

Based on the young adult fiction series “The Case of the Missing Marquess: An Enola Holmes Mystery” by Nancy Springer, the mystery film revolves around the story of detective Sherlock Holmes’ teenage sister Enola (which backwards spells alone). On her 16th birthday, she wakes up to find that her mother has disappeared and left a few gifts behind, which turned out to be clues. She travels to London to find her missing mother, but she ends up getting tangled in a conspiracy instead involving a runaway young lord.

Starring “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and Helena Bonham Carter, the film became one of the most-watched original Netflix releases during its launch. A second season was released on Nov. 4, 2022.
