Hello World: Best Coding Camps for Kids in Hong Kong

Knowing how to write code, algorithms, and puzzles is a skill not taught in school, but considered a vital life skill in the workplace. Children learn math, science, and English literature, but computer science or coding is rarely an option for students studying the IB or GCSE curriculum in Hong Kong.
Coding camps have popped up all over Hong Kong in recent years in anticipation and prediction of parents eager to have their children study a valuable work skill often neglected in the classroom.
We compiled some of the best coding camps and schools in Hong Kong for parents who want to see their kid become the next Zuck!
Preface
Preface is one of Hong Kong’s largest and most developed coding schools for children aged 3 to 12, with certified trainers from MIT in the U.S. Young coders and computer scientists are able to register and undertake 16- hour courses (of three stages) in interactive apps ScratchJr, MIT Scratch, and App Inventor.
A 16-hour course covers the basics of all applications used within the one-on-one classes, with tuition fees starting at HK$12,800. A full 48-hour course stretched over several weeks covers every stage in a programme and is priced at HK$38,400. Private classes allow parents and children to customise schedules according to one’s daily schedule, and to personalise the curriculum with the students’ current coding abilities.
Students aged 3 to 5 can train up math skills and problem-solving abilities through coding puzzles on ScratchJr in the “Fun with Code” course; aged 6 to 8 students can become familiar with solving problems in a programmatic and logical way using Scratch in “Grow with Code.”
For students aged 9 and up, Preface’s “Innovate with Code” programme introduces children to using App Inventor to develop skills in the real-world workflow in app development and pursue further opportunities to study computer science in education.

Koding Kingdom
Partnered with Microsoft and Cisco, Koding Kingdom is flexible with schedules and class material in the range of programs offered to children exploring coding. Regular classes from Monday to Sunday are held at both campuses, as well as summer, October, Christmas, Chinese New Year, and Easter five-day holiday coding camps.
Their most popular courses delve into topics such as Vex Robotics, white-hacking, AI, and syntax-based programming. Hackathons, where students are taught a coding language and then required to break into a computer system to uncover secrets, are held monthly in their dedicated Cyberport hub, Whampoa, and Causeway Bay.
Each program is split up into 10 weeks of classes for students aged 4 to 12+. Standard classes last 1.5 hours long and cost HK$550.
Whampoa campus: Koding Kingdom, 6/F Harbourfront Landmark, 11 Wan Hoi St, Hung Hom, Kowloon
Causeway Bay campus: Koding Kingdom, 8/F, Lee Theatre Plaza, 99 Percival Street, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
Cobo Academy
At their two campuses in Wan Chai and Whampoa, Cobo Academy offers in-person classes in block-based programming, mobile app and game development, web programming, and VR classes for children aged 4 to 15.
Students in “intern” classes (aged 4 to 5) will be introduced to coding languages Cobo and Scratch, whilst upper primary and middle school- aged students will become familiar with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python.
Classes are taught interactively with projects relating to coding mods for computer games and VR graphics. Each term covers 10.5 hours of seven lessons and costs upwards of HK$5,250.
Wan Chai campus: Cobo Academy, 6/F, Yam Tze Commercial Building, 23 Thomson Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong
Whampoa campus: Cobo Academy, 6/F, Room 7, Harbourfront Landmark, 11 Wan Hoi St, Hung Hom, Kowloon
RoboCode Academy
Led by Dr. Jackei Wong of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, RoboCode Academy aims to empower young students in Hong Kong to learn more about STEM subjects outside the classroom and developing skills in problem-based learning through simple programming apps such as Minecraft Python, Scratch, and Neuron.
Four sets of classes are offered for child-coders at their three campuses: “Achiever” (age 4 to 5) engaging children in coding “by achieving simple missions,” , “Builder” (age 6 to 8) learning programming concepts through interactive apps and robots, “Creator” (age 9 to 11) encouraging “creativity via coding to solve real problems,”, and “Developer” (age 12+) developing skills in programming languages “with challenging projects.”
If your children are anxious or unprepared about the world of coding, free one-hour STEM education trial classes are offered at their centres in Kowloon Bay, Shatin, and Tseun Wan.
Kowloon Bay campus: RoboCode Academy, Unit 1306, 13/F, Telford House, 16 Wang Hoi Rd, Kowloon Bay, Kowloon
Shatin campus: Unit A, 16/F, Kings Wing Plaza 2, 1 On Kwan St, Shek Mun, Shatin, New Territories
Tseun Wan campus: Unit 1311, 13/F, Grand City Plaza, 1-17 Sai Lau Kok Rd, Tseun Wan, New Territories
