Cats offer that unconditional love and affection that some humans may lack. They are always there to greet you when you awake from slumber or return home. Whether a welcome purr or a snuggle up on the couch, our feline friends can't help but add joy and wonder to our lives. If you're thinking about adopting a cat, explore your options with some of the best cat rescue organizations in Hong Kong.

Lifelong Animal Protection (LAP)

For almost two decades, LAP has been saving neglected cats and dogs in Hong Kong by providing rescue centres that double as a meeting spot for eager adopters and foster families to connect with their potential companions. Established by Sheila McClelland, the group has since grown to facilitate cat adoption as well as fund a spay-neuter-release project targeting feral cat colonies on Lamma Island.

For those inclined to felines, their cat adoption centre is located on First Street in Sai Ying Pun and has been a long-time host for shop cats from around the neighbourhood and yonder that have nowhere else to go after their resident stores close down.

If you might not be ready to commit yet, but would like to lend a helping “paw” to the foundation, the centre is also open to volunteers who can offer their expertise in helping the charity to grow, with more information and signups available here.

Hong Kong Cats Charity

Saving needy animals from the streets and rescuing purebreds abandoned for their health issues, the Hong Kong Cats Charity is a local non-profit rescue force. Based in Sai Kung, the organisation works to rehabilitate their four-legged inhabitants whilst finding them caring forever homes by sharing profiles of each cat or kitten on a social media directory. Their adoption fee starts at a minimum of HK$1,200 in order to cover the cost of vaccinations, Frontline anti-flea treatment, deworming, desexing, and microchipping, to ensure that each cat is in a healthy and happy condition before leaving the residence. Get in touch via [email protected] or by phone through the number (+852) 5131 3921 to learn more about the adoption process.

Location: Hong Kong Cats Charity, Tan Cheung Village, Sai Kung Tuk, New Territories

Paws United

Coinciding with the regrettable pandemic boom in animal adoption as a result of lockdown loneliness, Paws United Charity first launched in February 2020 as a cat re-homing initiative with an adoption centre in Repulse Bay. Providing animals with quality care, with grain-free food from sponsors Canidae, and letting the felines roam free around their venue, the charity provides attentive in-house care to ensure that all kitties are able to be in their prime health.

Cat adoption costs begin at HK$1,500 and includes a de-sexing operation. Peppy volunteers will accompany you at the centre to help guide through the adoption as well as to educate on the important ins-and-outs of being a cat-owner.

Hong Kong Paws Foundation

First established in 2005 by founder Kat, and managed entirely by volunteers, the Hong Kong Paws Foundation is a dedicated animal welfare organisation that helps neglected cats and dogs by providing healthcare and a halfway home. Their cat residence is located in Tin Hau and plays host to many adorable cats of all shapes and sizes. Stay updated by following their Facebook page to find out when they are hosting their next adoption pop-ups at Discovery Bay.

Kirsten’s Zoo

Providing aid to cats and dogs as well as less common domestic species like hedgehogs, rabbits, and terrapins, Kirsten’s Zoo hosts animals with the hopes of preventing more unwanted pets from ending up in dangerous environments. Their cat sanctuary is a modestly sized one, and is supported by Acorn Vetinary Hospital, providing a safe place for their cohort and preparing them for successful re-homing. Those who want to take part in making sure these furry friends can have a better life, but yet aren’t able to foster or adopt can consider making a monetary donation or sponsor the group here, or apply to help the charity operations by filling in this form.

Location: Kirsten’s Zoo, 20/F, 88 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong
