5 Institutions and Organizations that Teach Sign Language in Manila

5 Institutions and Organizations that Teach Sign Language in Manila

Spanish? Mandarin? Portuguese?

Most of us would probably love to learn a new language because becoming multilingual is better, offering a range of benefits in the corporate world. Aside from these popular languages in the world, another language you might like to learn is sign language.

Sign language is often looked at as nonessential in our daily lives, but the truth is, it helps us express the words impossible to be spoken when you’re underwater, at a loud place, and more. Most importantly, sign language helps us communicate with deaf and mute people.

If you’re interested in making social connections with them, here’s a list of where you can learn sign language in Manila.

Philippine Association of Interpreters for Deaf Empowerment (PAIDE)

With the goal of breaking the language barrier among deaf persons, PAIDE provides programs for sign language in Manila through intensive training, innovative methodologies, and ethical conduct practices.

People from all walks of life are welcome to support the PAIDE community. Through fundraising, the organization was able to manage training for public school teachers to serve deaf persons in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

Location: 89 Primo Cruz, San Jose, Mandaluyong, Philippines

Philippine Deaf Sign Language Association (PDSL Association)

In line with teaching sign language in Manila, the PDSL Association offers programs related to translation, linguistics, and language development for the deaf.

The non-government organization was founded in 2013 by deaf Filipino church leaders in collaboration with the Deaf Ministry in the Philippines. Its main objective is to share God’s word with the deaf community using their own language.

Earlier this year, the NGO was able to successfully conduct a fourth sign language Bible translation workshop online, with a total of 77 participants including individuals, organizations, and churches.

Location: 12 Big Horseshoe Drive, Horseshoe Village, Quezon City, Philippines

LINK Center for the Deaf

LINK Center for the Deaf is the brainchild of four people (two special educators, a child psychologist, and a counselor) whose advocacy is to bring out the great potential among deaf people, especially children.

Due to poverty and disability, most deaf children face double marginalization in society. The organization was formed to create a bridge between these children and education, delivering special services that will empower them to lead their own lives.

With the help of other institutions, LINK organizes social responsibility activities, seminar-workshop for teachers, art programs, and psycho-spiritual development.

Location: 2nd Floor MQI Bldg., #42 Esteban Abada St., corner Rosa Alvero St.,Loyola Heights, Quzeon City, Philippines

Manila Christian Computer Institute for the Deaf (MCCID)

Serving the deaf community since 1993, Manila Christian Computer Institute for the Deaf teaches sign language using Filipino and follows English proper on written exercises. They also share Bible-based values and Christian work ethics for future deaf workers and entrepreneurs.

To ensure conducive learning, the MCCID built a facility for sports and recreational activities, specially designed training manuals and exercises for the deaf, Free Wi-Fi access, and job placement assistance for qualified graduates and trainees.

Location: 145 Mayor Jose F. Diaz Ext., Purok Dos Sitio Buntong Palay, Bgy. Silangan, San Mateo, Rizal, Philippines

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Manila

The prestigious De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Manila shows its support for deaf people through the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS).

The program specification of Bachelor in Applied Deaf Studies (BAPDST) is a ten-term degree that “allows the Deaf learner to study their own identity, language, culture, and communities so that they are able to work, lead, mentor, volunteer, and advocate for their rights, self-determination, and work for the realization of their full potential, ensuring that the Deaf heritage is preserved and culture valued and nurtured.”

Best Head Spa Treatments in Manila for a Self-Care Date
Head spa Photo by Strokes Wellness Spa/Website

In our fast-paced and stress-filled lives, we all need a little pick-me-up now and then so finding ways to unwind and rejuvenate is essential and is one of the highest forms of self-love.

There are a ton of ways to care for ourselves from massages and facials to manicures and pedicures, but we’re here to tell you all about the latest rejuvenation ritual that’s been making its rounds on social media.

A "Head Spa" treatment isn’t just about relaxation. It’s a specialized scalp and hair care experience! It’s a spa treatment that goes beyond the typical shampoo, conditioner, and scalp massage, one that originated in Japan and is a process designed to nourish your scalp, revitalize your hair, and most importantly — calm your mind

In a head spa experience, you will usually be asked to lie down on your back with your hair draped over a basin. From there, the therapist will perform several treatment steps from shampooing and scrubbing to gentle massaging using a variety of hair oils and cleansing serums. A standout feature of this treatment is the arch-shaped rinsing mechanism that moves over your head with flowing water, which creates a deeply relaxing sensation.

Several "scalp facials" have popped up in Manila, offering one type or a combination of therapies. From the Chinese Head Spas that apply traditional Chinese medicines to detoxify your scalp to Korean Head Spas that make use of calming essential oils and water or steam therapy, all these treatments share a similar goal: to better your hair health from the roots, alleviate tension, and simply give you a moment of blissful escape.

This love month, why not take yourself out on a self-care date with a calming Head Spa treatment? Here are the best places you can get them around Metro Manila.

Skalp

Skalp Head Spa deems itself the “premier destination for luxurious scalp care and head spa treatments in the city.” The first to offer Japanese-style Head Spa services in the Philippines, Skalp Head Spa combines Japanese head spa techniques with modern wellness practices that improve scalp health and stimulate blood circulation through unique massage techniques.

Skalp offers three personalized treatments: The Skalp Relaxation, which allows you to indulge in their soothing Skalp massage using their specially crafted candle oil infused with coconut and rosemary. It includes waterfall therapy and a rejuvenating neck and shoulder massage. The process takes around 90 minutes and is priced at P3,800 per session.

The Skalp Renewal is their deep exfoliating treatment so it’s a great option if you’re experiencing scalp problems. The session involves scrubbing, Skalp steam, waterfall therapy, and a nourishing Skalp mask that will ensure your scalp feels refreshed and renewed. The process takes around two hours and is priced at P4,800

If you want to get the full package, we highly recommend the Ultimate Skalp Experience, a three-hour session that takes you on a 20-step journey of calm and relaxation, a combinations of the first two services. This is priced at P5,800. Skalp also offers pre-natal scalp massage services tailor-made for moms-to-be.

For bookings, click here or contact +639166979664. As they only have limited capacity for Head Spa treatments, they require a P1,000 deposit to secure an appointment.

Location: Skalp Head Spa, 2F Wilson Park Square, San Juan 1500

Operation Hours: Monday to Sunday, 10 AM to 10 PM

Jelly Skin Lab

This Korean Head Spa, facial, and nail salon just opened last December at Uptown Parade, and it’s already becoming a crowd favorite with its prime location and relaxing treatments.

Jelly Skin Lab offers both Head Spa treatments and Scalp Tonic treatments. The former focuses more on scalp care and relaxation so you’ll be spending more time on the shampoo bed while the latter targets scalp issues.

One of the best parts about Jelly Skin’s services is that the treatments come with aromatherapy. They offer a variety of products in their aromatic hair care line, all of which have their own distinct functions and benefits. There’s the Rosemary line which reduces hair loss and promotes hair growth; the Tea tree line soothes the scalp and helps control dandruff; and the Quinoa line adds moisture to the hair, strengthens it and repairs any damage. On top of all those benefits, they also smell really good!

The Head Spa treatments are also divided into three: The 8-step Detoxify,” the 12-step Purify and Renew,” and the 15-step The Ultimate Hair and Scalp Indulgence.” The latter services include a scalp tonic treatment so we highly recommend getting at least the 12-step for a fuller experience. All services include shampoo, massage, and water therapies, and can range from an hour to three hours per session. If you enjoyed their treatments, some of their products like the shampoos and aromatic oils are also available for purchase at their store, so you can treat yourself at home!

Prices depend on your hair length and start from P2,680. You can check out their price list on their Instagram page. For bookings, you can DM them on IG or contact them at +639549847571 or 0283652042.

Location: Jelly Skin Lab, 2F Uptown Parade, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig

Operation Hours: Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 9 PM

It’s a gorgeous and tranquil place that immediately sets the tone for relaxation. Whether you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up or a full day of pampering, Strokes offers one or a combination of their treatments to give you that radiant glow after each session.

Their “Scalp and Head Spa Retreat Treatmentblends Japanese massage and the restorative techniques of a Korean Head Spa, offering a holistic approach to scalp treatment. Their unique 20-step process starts with a thorough scalp detox, followed by a Japanese acupressure massage that extends to the neck and shoulders, relieving tension and improving blood circulation. We’re already sighing just thinking about it!

You can experience this ultimate Head Spa retreat for P5,000, which lasts about 90 minutes. For bookings, you can contact +639177298058 with the details on this booking request form

FYI, they have a February 2025 promo where you can get 10% off on any of their services for a minimum spend of P2,000. Reserve your slot today 'til Feb. 16 to avail!

Valentine’s is right around the corner! While many Christians will attribute the celebration to the Roman St. Valentine’s, the historic holiday is thought to have its roots in an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia. In particular, Lupercalia was a celebration of the coming of spring, as well as of rebirth.

But despite its hazy history, there’s no doubt that people of all countries and ethnicities love the day. It is, after all, a celebration of love! The date itself is especially popular in the Philippines and is in fact the most popular wedding date among Filipinos.

If you’re among those with a beloved to spend the day with, it's only right to treat him or her to gifts, cuddles, and plenty of love. But if you’re looking for something quirky and offbeat, then do consider getting them one (or more) of these fun bouquets

Belo Sculpts Confidence with Customizable Weight Management Program
Photo 2 Photo by Photo by The Beat Asia

There’s always that sense of guilt post-holiday season, after splurging on the finer things in life and overindulging in delicious at Christmas parties and family gatherings.

But as the holidays are winding down, we’re here to remind you that it’s the perfect time to recalibrate your fitness goals and reassess your health and beauty journey. New Year, New You, right? And what better way to do that than to get back into shape?

Belo, one of the Philippines’ leading medical aesthetic clinics, just launched the “Belo Body Reset” program which allows you to take hold in your own hands your beauty journey and define what beauty looks like for you. Designed to address individuals’ diverse body goals, The Belo Body Reset is a personalized, sustainable, and medically-supervised weight management program. The program helps you achieve and maintain your body goals through healthy and safe means and provides treatments that you can realistically maintain consistently over an extended period.

Now you might be thinking, is it just another slimming treatment? Dr. Vicki Belo, renowned dermatologist and visionary of Belo Medical Group, hosted an intimate gathering at her home in Makati last Jan. 27 to introduce the new program, defining it as more than just a way to slim down, but to achieve whatever body shape you believe reflects your true and beautiful self.

A Safe and Sustainable Way To Be Beautiful

As with any medical treatment, the program starts with a consultation. We’ve got to speak with one of the doctors at the event and the first thing he asked us was, “What is your goal? What do you want to achieve?”

This question encapsulates what the Belo Body Reset program is all about. It focuses more on weight management and learning how to achieve and maintain your desired weight goal or body shape. The consultation is then followed by an intensive lab test to check your history and other physical signs and symptoms. This part emphasizes safety and you can be assured that any treatment you undergo in this program is medically-supervised and safe for you. Dr. Vicki Belo explained that before they recommend treatments to their patients, they always look into their history to know if there are any underlying issues.

She said, “The reason why we did this was because we wanted everybody to be safe. We do a complete checkup on you. We do your thyroid because sometimes the reason you can’t lose weight is because your thyroid is just sluggish or sometimes it’s a mitochondrial problem. The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell and it metabolizes everything.”

Afterward, the doctor will then create a suitable program for you that may include one or a combination of their treatments. Dr. Hayden Kho further summarized the Belo Body Reset as a program involving three things: injectables, infusions, and devices. It doesn’t mean, however, that you have to take all three. Each program is tailor-made for individuals and you can choose what works for you. More importantly, what is comfortable for you. There are three main programs in the Belo Body Reset:

Program 1 is “A Dose of Change” which is ideal for those seeking sustainable weight loss. This program combines target therapies to help reset the body and achieve a healthier, more energized life. This includes sessions for Semiglutide, an injectable weight loss aid; Exilis, a painless slimming treatment done by a machine that melts unwanted fat; and the Body Reset Drip, which gives you a metabolic and energy boost.

Program 2 is ideal for those who want to focus on fitness improvement and tighten the skin. “The Lean Path” involves contouring treatments such as V-Contour Ultra and Prime Contour X, which will give you a more toned physique.

Lastly, program 3 is “Peak Performance” targeted at those with active lifestyles and who are aiming to achieve a lean, muscular physique with minimal body fat.

“Body reset is a hyper-personalized program. I cannot simply say ‘This is it.’ [Do] you want to restart your body or start the year well? I always compare myself to a priest. You come to me and confess your sins. *laughs*” Dr. Vicki joked, reiterating that the program is completely up to you and that the Belo team is here to support and guide you through it.

Experiencing The Reset

If you’re still wondering if it’s worth it embarking on this beauty journey with Belo or if it even works, take it from Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray, who graced the event as the brand’s ambassador. The beauty queen told us all about her experience with the Body Reset program, and how it helped her achieve her body goals.

“The Body Reset is almost like a partnership that collaborates with you asking, 'What is it that you envision for yourself? What does your best self look like for you? And how can we help you achieve that?'” she said.

“It was quite educational for me when I was able to talk with Vicki and the doctors at Belo. They took my labs so it was medically supervised, and that education process gave me the feeling of being equipped as I’m taking steps toward being my best self. I just felt so guided.”

As a model and public figure, Catriona pursues and maintains an active lifestyle to stay in shape and keep herself healthy. She told us about how she tries to move every day, incorporating workouts into her busy schedule or turning them into social gatherings. She admitted to being a fan of Pilates, and would often go running or play pickleball with friends. This shows that proper diet and exercise are needed in order to fully take advantage of the program.

“I try to be sustainable about it. Consistency is a big thing. I really want to tone and tighten. Those were the two words that I wanted to achieve for myself,” she shared. “It’s a comprehensive type of approach. It needs to go hand in hand [treatments and exercise].”

Other beauty queens also graced the couch session with Dr. Vicki such as Miss Universe Philippines 2022 and 2023, Celeste Cortesi and Michelle Dee, who both received love and care from the Belo team which gave them the confidence to put their best foot forward when they were still competing.

“I tried to lose the weight myself first, but I needed that extra love. You really need the assistance. If you have Belo, you will always stay beautiful and youthful,” Michelle said.

Throughout the Q&A session, Dr. Vicki also gave the floor to some of their patients who went under the program and boasted amazing results. While listening to these success stories, you can see that Belo isn’t in the business of merely wanting you to achieve a certain beauty standard but rather encouraging you to strive for the body in which you feel the most beautiful, confident, and comfortable.

“We’re just here to help you,” Dr. Vicki said. “Please don’t feel pressured to do anything. We’re not trying to make you feel ashamed that you don’t have the body of Catriona or anything. It really comes from my heart, sincerely from my own struggles. I needed help then and I had no one to help me. So I became my own mentor. If you need us, we’re here.”

Exion

The Body Reset Program is a testament to her desire and promise to guide those who wish to slim, tighten, tone, or all of the above through non-surgical energy-based treatments. One of which is the Exion, which he had to privilege to try. The Exion is a 4-in-1 skin platform that melts unwanted fat and tightens the skin. Think of it as Exilis 2.0. The machine can be used on your targeted body parts such as legs, back, abdomen, and arms. It can also be used for your face to reduce double chins or wrinkles.

The treatment itself is painless and more relaxing as the device is rolled across your body, emitting heat and slight vibrations. It was like getting a massage except you know you’re also melting fat at the same time. There’s no downtime or any pain after, which proves just how non-invasive these treatments are.

Other favorite machine services they're currently offering include the EmFace, their non-surgical facelift, and the EmSculpt NEO, which is ideal for muscle toning.

5 Dietary Supplements Women Can Take to Stay Healthy
Laura adai Jh Ns4h73db0 unsplash Photo by Laura Adai/Unsplash

While they aren’t meant to be taken as medicine, dietary supplements are a useful health tool for millions worldwide. This is because studies have consistently shown that some diets are lacking in important nutrients; while this can be due to cultural norms, for some it can also be due to dietary restrictions or limited access to nutritious foods. It can even be due to a medical condition wherein the patient simply needs more calories or nutrients.

For whatever reason that the diet may be lacking, supplements are here to provide what’s missing. For adult women, these are some of the most important supplements you may wish to consider taking, especially as we age. But don’t forget! It’s always best to consult with a doctor before adding to or taking away from your current lifestyle or diet.

Multivitamins

The pandemic has certainly taught us how important multivitamins can be. Multivitamins are designed to carry a range of important vitamin requirementsfrom Vitamin A to Zinc – and can support a healthy lifestyle. With a good diet and exercise, multivitamins can increase energy, strengthen the immune system, aid memory, and support overall health. Taking them consistently is important to see the full benefits.

A fantastic option for multivitamins is one that the entire family can take! For that, look at none other than Mary Ruth’s. This US-made, vegan supplement brand has finally landed in the Philippines, and for good reason. Their wide range of supplements include the ever-popular Liquid Morning Multivitamin which can be taken by babies as young as one year old to adults older than 14. It includes everything you might need and covers common nutrient deficiencies such as Vitamin C for immune health, folate for red blood cell formation, thiamine for energy conversion, and even biotin for hair. As it comes in liquid form, it’s also easy to ingest and can be taken as is on an empty stomach, or even mixed into juices for fickle children.

Iron

Did you know that iron deficiency anemia is common among Filipinos? While pregnant women are most likely to experience it, older males are susceptible as well. This can often manifest as tiredness, fatigue, sallow skin, and or shortness of breath. This may be due to the rice-heavy diet of Filipinos; unfortified rice often carries phytate which is in fact an antinutrient and inhibits iron mineral absorption.

Nature’s Bounty offers local customers two iron supplement options to choose from. They carry “Gentle Iron” capsules with 28mg of iron and standard iron capsules with 65mg. Both will be effective in battling iron deficiency but dosage will depend on the needs of the patient as well as their age and weight. Remember, it’s always best to consult with a doctor before taking additional supplements.

Collagen

Collagen has been the hype word for a couple of years now. While most people choose to take this supplement for beauty purposes (i.e. to avoid wrinkles), collagen can also help improve joint health and muscle mass. As a protein, collagen helps in building important connective tissues that make up the skin, bones, muscles, and cartilage. Unfortunately, collagen production does slow down at around 1% per year starting in our mid-20s which is why it’s important for some to take supplements.

Vitanature+ is a leading Thai health brand that offers many different kinds of collagen to support their consumers. One of their most popular new offerings is the V-Collagen Gummies which is made with 500mg of fish collagen peptides, 60mg of melon extract, and 20mg each of Vitamin E and C. They taste just like candy which makes it easy and fun to eat!

Calcium

With the growing number of people turning to veganism, it’s become clear that calcium supplements are becoming necessary. A vital requirement for strong bones (which can weaken due to age), calcium supplements are also a good option for lactose intolerant patients who may not be able to consume milk or dairy. To protect against osteoporosis, calcium supplements may be helpful alongside proper diet and regular exercise; calcium can also help to increase bone density.

There are many different kinds of calcium available on the market, most of which is calcium carbonate (which is popular due to its affordability). It may surprise you to know that calcium carbonate is in fact, derived from fossilized coral reefs, animal skeletons, and or marine shells and may contain harmful heavy metals.

That’s why lately, people have been turning to a different source of calcium: that sourced from algae! Studies have shown that calcium from algae has better bioavailability than calcium carbonate and can be absorbed by the body better. It’s also a more sustainable option as algae is abundant and can be harvested simply by hand.

Those turning to algae calcium can look to Super Nutrition, which offers algae-based calcium made from Icelandic red algae and a mix of fruit and veggie extracts such as those from organic carrots, broccoli, raspberry, and pomegranate.

Folic Acid

A B-vitamin that’s incredibly important for cell growth and function, folic acid (also known as folate) is critical for prenatal care. Even the healthiest pregnant woman is encouraged to take folic acid supplements to support the healthy development of their babies, especially during the early stages of pregnancy. Some doctors even recommend starting folic acid supplements up to three months before conception to ensure that the body is equipped during these crucial times.

Folic acid can help reduce the risk of birth defects and works hand-in-hand with other B-vitamins such as B-6 and B-12 to control high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that can lead to heightened risks of heart and blood problems.

Thorne’s Basic Prenatal Capsules are a good choice for mothers-to-be as they emphasize folic acid but also add other necessary vitamins into the formula. With one capsule, women are also upping their intake of Vitamin A, C, D, E, and K along with folate.
