Giant Panda
Where to find them: Giant Panda Adventure
Amazing Asian Animals I Waterfront
Probably the cuddliest creatures to have ever graced the planet (no offense to the other animals on this list, of course), Giant Pandas are the epitome of cute with their large eyes, rounded figures and trademark black patches.
Ocean Park Hong Kong currently has two Giant Pandas named Ying Ying and Le Le who are both very well-cared for. You can pay them a visit in the Giant Panda Adventure at the Waterfront where you can watch them munching on bamboo sticks or just hanging out with their neighbors from the temperate forests of Mainland China.
You can also sign up as an “Insider” and get an even closer look into the daily routines of the panda’s caretakers and learn more about their behaviors and eating habits. The best part? You will even get the chance to feed them a snack!
The Giant Panda Discovery program is priced at HK$780 per participant (HK$663 for Ocean Park Annual Membership holders) and available from 2 PM to 2:50 PM, Wednesdays to Mondays. For more details, click here.
Did You Know: Giant pandas need a food intake of 4,300 to 5,500 kilocalories per day to survive. That’s like 20 bowls of rice or 20 hamburgers! We love a cutie with a big appetite!
Red Panda
Where to find them: Giant Panda Adventure
Amazing Asian Animals I Waterfront
The Red Panda may be smaller in size, but its cuteness level is up to par with even the largest of the Giant Pandas. These furry omnivores are about the size of a house cat and are playful and social creatures. In the wild, they're usually playing together in groups such as frolicking through the trees or rolling around in the grass (C.U.T.E.).
Ocean Park Hong Kong gives you a chance to become a “Red Panda Keeper” where you can interact with them and experience the work of caretakers firsthand! It’s the perfect opportunity to learn more about them and how to help conserve red pandas in the wild.
The program is priced at HK$1,180 per participant (HK$1,003 for Ocean Park Annual Membership holders) and available from 11 AM to 12 PM, Tuesdays to Sundays. For more information, click here.
Did You Know: Red Pandas have an extra thumb that juts out from their wrist bone. This sixth digit helps them grasp bamboo stems. Giant Pandas have them too! Side question: Who do you think will win in a thumb wresting battle?
Capybara
Where to find them: The Expedition Trail
Rainforest I Summit
Furry creatures that can swim? We want to see it. Capybaras are semi-aquatic mammals native to South America. These cute creatures with plump pig-shaped bodies, short legs, and webbed feet are closely related to guinea pigs and rock cavies and are very much like beavers with how great swimmers they are.
Get to know them at The Expedition Trail where they lurk beneath the leaves of the rainforest alongside other awesome creatures such as toucans, the kinkajou, and the brightly colored poison frogs.
Did You Know: Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world and are fantastic swimmers! They often spend their days in the water to cool down and can even stay underwater for up to five minutes, which proves useful when hiding from predators. (Honestly, same. We’d lounge by a pool all day to hide from our responsibilities.)
Asian Small-Clawed Otter
Where to find them: Panda Village
Amazing Asian Animals I Waterfront
Have you ever seen those viral otter videos? We know you thought of it and smiled just now! Well, the good news is you can see a real one at Ocean Park and bask in all their adorable cuddliness in the flesh!
Watch the smallest otters in Asia frolicking in the waters and catch them demonstrating their hunting skills at the Panda Village.
Did You Know: Asian Small-clawed Otters are monogamous creatures, which means they have only one mate at a time. They often form groups and live with their extended families.
Meerkat
Where to find them: Little Meerkat and Giant Tortoise Adventure
Whiskers Harbour I Waterfront
Popular for their upright posture, Meerkats are squirrel-sized mongooses that live in South Africa. Their slender bodies, pointed faces, tiny ears, and dark eye patches are just some of the characteristics that warrant them a spot on this list. There’s just something about small creatures standing upright like a human that makes us coo.
Meet them up close for HK$480 (HK$408 for Ocean Park Annual Membership holders) and be captivated by this energetic bunch as you try your hand as a caretaker, feed them, and simply enjoy being in the presence of the cutest creatures in the African savannah.
Did you know: Meerkats are extremely social creatures and live together in burrows where they keep safe from predators and the African heat. They only go outside in the day to hunt for food, but back in the burrow, other adult meerkats stay behind to watch over their young because rumor has it that rival meerkat mobs will eat them if given the chance. (YIKES!)
Gentoo Penguin
Where to find them: South Pole Spectacular
Polar Adventure | Summit
From the time we watched “Happy Feet” our lives were never the same. We don’t think penguins need an introduction when it comes to their cuteness factor. Just one look at them waddling across the rocks will have anyone break into a smile. These little tap dancers — we mean arctic creatures, have bright orange beaks, white feathered caps, and peach-colored feet that make them stand out against their Antarctic habitat.
Ocean Park provides guests with an opportunity to interact with Gentoo Penguins through two exciting activities. The Penguin Expedition is an immersive program guided by caretakers which allows you to interact with them and even feed them and take memorable photos!
Prices are at HK$1,180 per participant (HK$1,003 for Ocean Park Annual Membership holders) and available from 10:45 AM to 11:45 AM, Wednesdays to Mondays at the South Pole Spectacular.
You can also take part in the Penguin Feeding program where you can feed them with your own hands and take a closer look as they have a good meal for HK$80 (HK$68 for Ocean Park Annual Membership holders). For more information, click here.
Did You Know: Gentoo Penguins are the fastest bird swimmers with a speed of up to 36 km per hour!
Arctic Fox
Where to find them: Arctic Fox Den
Polar Adventure I Summit
This cutie patootie may look like your regular canine friend but these tundra predators survive in one of the harshest environments on earth! Visit the Arctic Fox Den and see how these furry creatures adapt to the extreme cold and learn more about their behaviors and the impact of humans on their natural habitats. Unlike the others, this one doesn't have any interactive activities (for obvious safety reasons) — but honestly, "If not friend, why friend-shaped?"
Did you know: One of the most fascinating things about arctic foxes is that they are camouflaged throughout the year. Their fur changes colors from dark brown in the summer to white in the winter — talk about cool!
