Satisfy Your Coffee Cravings With These Vegan Friendly Cafés in Hong Kong

Satisfy Your Coffee Cravings With These Vegan Friendly Cafés in Hong Kong

Gone are the days when vegans would struggle to look for food and beverage establishments that can cater to their preferences. Time has shown us that enterprises are willing to accommodate those with special dietary needs, even if this means overhauling or changing things up in the menu or offering options that are usually hard to find.

In Hong Kong, vegans will be glad to know that there are a number of cafés that can tend to their diets. Because who says those living a plant-based lifestyle can't enjoy coffee and other treats like the rest? These cafés in Hong Kong are known for being vegan friendly, so do check them out when you have the chance!

The Coffee Academics

The Coffee Academics has been around in Hong Kong since 2012 and in that short amount of time has gone on and established itself as the region's leading specialty coffee player in the city. Today, it has branches in Singapore, Thailand, Mainland China, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Korea.

You'll love its signature espresso-based selections, such as the Manuka, a velvety latte with raw New Zealand Manua honey; the Okinawa, a cappuccino blended with dark brown sugar from Okinawa, Japan; and the Steam, an ice steamed espresso where the sugars in the coffee are emulsified for a frothy texture. Vegans have the option to request for plant-based milk in their coffee, choosing from brands like Bonsoy, Califia Almond, and Oatly for just an additional HK$6.

Sweetpea Café

Sweetpea is a 100% gluten-free dedicated café serving not just coffees and other specialty drinks but also cakes, breakfast, and brunch! Sweetpea offers your usual black coffee like espresso, Americano, and long black, but we recommend you check out its other special coffee options, such as the piccolo, cappuccino, bulletproof latte (made of coffee, coconut butter, and dairy or non-dairy milk), and rose latte (made of coffee, rose essentials, and petals), among others.

While Sweetpea offers soy and oat milk options, we recommend vegans to go for its house- made vanilla cashew milk to go with its coffees! Don't forget to also check out its signature vegan chocolate cake and vegan purple sweet potato coconut cake.

Little Cove Espresso

Little Cove Espresso in Sai Kung is an all-day breakfast and lunch café that serves specialty coffee, tea, Mediterranean-inspired food, and desserts. Little Cove Espresso has a wide range of coffees on offer, from the usual espresso, ristretto, long black, and cappuccino to cold brew, hand pour, bulletproof coffee, and a coffee tonic, among others. It also has non- coffee drinks available, such as matcha latte, turmeric latte, and chocolate beetroot latte. Vegans will love this café as they have the option to choose from different non-dairy milk, such as soy, almond, and oat!

LN Fortunate Coffee

LN Fortunate Coffee is another vegan establishment in Hong Kong. We recommend this café in Sai Ying Pun if you want something hearty to go with your cup of coffee. Choose among its coffee like the soya cappuccino, soya flat white, soya latte, espresso, and Americano, and feel free to swap your soy milk for almond milk if that's what you prefer. Meanwhile, its Fortunate Set offerings, which are served with a salad and potato wedges, will have you choosing among delicious dishes like vegan black pepper slice bread, vegan pork cutlet, and mushroom grilled vegan burger bread!

Vego Coffee

Vego Coffee in Tsim Sha Tsui is a pet-friendly vegan café that offers brunch and plant-based coffees. Vegans will be glad to choose among its vegan espresso, Americano, latte, flat white, and espresso tonic, among others. There are also non-coffee offerings like the caramel charcoal latte, matcha latte, and chocolate latte! Food options range from the mouthwatering vegan tuna and avocado homemade sourdough bread to the Peking vegan duck and vegan matcha waffles with fruit, syrup, and cream.

Oceania Cruises Reimagines Fine Dining on their Newest Guest Ship, Allura
20250210 Oceania Cruises Photo by Oceania Crusies

Oceania Cruises, the world’s leading culinary- and destination-focused cruise line, is introducing new menus for The Grand Dining Room in the line’s newest 1,200 guest ship, Allura, which will launch in July 2025. These reimagined menus present more than 270 brand-new recipes across all three meal services, set apart by refined flavors, modern techniques, and elegant presentations.

The open-seating Grand Dining Room aboard each line is the heart of the Oceania Cruises culinary experience. Some of their newest features include a Signature Eggs Benedict section for the breakfast menu, a lunch menu inspired by chic French bistro dishes, and a reimagining of beloved classics for the dinner menu.

A Breakfast Tradition, Perfected

The Breakfast in The Grand Dining Room has been renewed and revitalized with eloquent presentations, balanced proportions, and more than 30 new recipes. The Signature Eggs Benedict Section takes center stage in the menu, offering a number of variations to the classic breakfast fave, such as the Eggs Benedict Florentine, layered with creamed spinach, crispy bacon, and a velvety hollandaise; and Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict, featuring a smoked salmon beneath the buttery sauce.

The morning menu also offers a creative variety of rotating selections, including a zucchini waffle with smoked salmon and yogurt sauce, breakfast sliders with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon on brioche, and the Mexican burrito filled with scrambled eggs, sausage, guacamole, and cheddar

La Brasserie Lunch Experience

For lunch, The Grand Dining Room transforms into La Brasserie, offering authentic French bistro-inspired dishes. The menu also features a rotating vegetarian main course, an artisanal cheese plate, and a curated charcuterie platter

Remarkable dishes include the Blanquette De Veau à L’Ancienne, a veal stew simmered in a creamy sauce with vegetables and fragrant pilar rice, and the traditional Coq Au Vin, featuring a chicken braised in red wine and paired with tagliatelle pasta.

Classic American favorites are still a mainstay, including the Oceania Cruises signature cheeseburger, made with ground chuck steak, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and onion on a homemade bun, and the French dip sandwich, crafted with thinly sliced roasted striploin and a rich beef jus inside a buttery roll.

An Artful Approach to Dinner

The Grand Dining Room’s dinner menu is refreshed with more than 200 new recipes, blending refined influences from global cuisines with a modern, balanced approach. It includes a section of Chef’s Recommendations, spotlighting dishes hand-selected by Chef Quaretti and his team of Executive Chefs.

New appetizers include a Scallop Panna Cotta with caviar, delivering a delicate contrast of silkiness and briny depth, and Pâté en Croûte Arlequin paired with a mango chutney mousseline, balancing a rich flavor with a bright, tangy finish. A Sautéed Duck Foie Gras escallop boasts a luxurious depth of flavor and a contrast of sweet and savory, complemented by a rhubarb compote, gingerbread crouton, and hibiscus flower sauce.

Entrées include a slow-cooked Korean BBQ beef short rib with a deep, umami-rich flavor, complemented by bok choy and pickled vegetables, and a decadent Seafood Vol-Au-Vent, scallops, shrimp, salmon, and black mussels delicately enveloped in puff pastry and paired with a velvety mustard sauce and tender green asparagus.

The Allura, Oceania Cruises’ Newest Vessel

The Allura is the eighth vessel in the Oceania Cruises’ fleet and is also the line’s second 1,200-guest Allura Class ship. Her sister ship, Vista, launched in May 2023 and was met with great global acclaim.

The Allura boasts one chef for every 10 guests, meaning half of the onboard crew is dedicated to culinary experiences. In addition to the new menus, food and wine pairing experiences are also available for guests, including demonstrations during exclusive Sommelier’s Choice and Cellar Master’s Classic Wine Pairing Luncheons.

Experience Harmony and Tranquility in Central’s Soho at NIWA
NIWA 1 Photo by NIWA Hong Kong

Enjoy a journey through Japan’s finest seasonal flavors right in Central’s Soho

Nestled in the vibrant culinary enclave of Central, Hong Kong, NIWA is a tranquil oasis in a city that never sleeps. Every detail, from its minimalist design to its carefully curated Omakase menus, is crafted and inspired by the harmony of a Japanese zen garden and is thoughtfully curated to create an immersive dining experience that celebrates the beauty of stillness.

A Space Designed for Tranquility

Once guests step into NIWA, they are greeted with an atmosphere that is a sharp contrast to the swarming city outside. The space is a masterclass in minimalist elegance, accommodating up to 19 guests, and was designed by Yuki Yasukagawa’s design house based in Hong Kong, Design East.

The restaurant's aura of serenity comes together with clean lines, soft lighting, and natural materials. Plants placed strategically add a touch of greenery, evoking a sense of organic calm. The harmonious design also reflects the heart of NIWA’s philosophy: to create an environment where every detail is in accord and the mind can rest.

“NIWA” means “zen garden” in Japanese, embodying the spirit of the restaurant. It is a space where food and surroundings encourage a deep connection to the senses, allowing guests to take pleasure in not only what’s on the plate but also the peace within the space itself.

Japanese Omakase Meets Culinary Craft

The Omakase experience at NIWA highlights the artistry and ingenuity of the chefs. Each dish is a contemporary masterpiece reflecting the philosophy of precision and creativity, and the chefs’ meticulous attention to detail and deep respect for the culinary arts.

NIWA’s Omakase is beyond a simple showcase of premium ingredients; it is a celebration of the beauty of ingredients elevated by innovative techniques and thoughtful presentation.

The omakase menus are both offered at lunch (from HK$580 for 14 courses) and dinner (from HK$1,580 for 22 courses). The menus are seasonal, while also maintaining a selection of signature creations that embody the restaurant’s dedication to craftmanship. Their sushi is a testament to this commitment, using Aka Shari, a red rice vinegar rice blend that is not common in other restaurants. The blend mixes two rice varieties, Uonoma-shi and Nishiki rice, ensuring the balance of texture of stickiness and a reflection of the chefs’ thorough attention to detail.

The Snapper Sashimi highlights the finesse of knife skills, with delicate slices of Japanese fish paired with yuzu vinegar and a subtle hint of spice, letting the fish in its purest state shine. The Charcoal Grill Eel is also proof of the culinary team’s artistry, with its gentle smokiness achieved with charcoal.

The Caviar Sea Urchin Hairy Crab is where craft meets indulgence, a luxurious trio enhanced by Japanese white vinegar jelly and adds a precise tang to balance its richness. The Slow Cook Abalone with Abalone Liver Sauce is where NIWA’s commitment to umami mastery shines, with a velvety sauce enveloping each grain and evoking the essence of the sea.

NIWA’s culinary artistry is its balance; each dish is carefully made to highlight the intrinsic flavors of the ingredients while allowing its true essence to shine. A standout feature is NIWA’s use of Binchotan charcoal, which adds unique depth and smokiness to its dishes.

The Thick Cut Wagyu Ox Tongue Amiyaki (HK$450) and Hokkaido Scallop Isobeyaki (HK$120) are prime examples of how the Binchotan charcoal enhances the dining experiences, allowing the thick, rich, marbled beef to melt in the mouth with each bite.

Seasonal items, like the fresh mitten crabs, bonito, and oysters, are carefully selected and prepared with the utmost detail.

A Unique Vegetarian Menu

NIWA proudly presents a full vegetarian menu apart from its traditional offerings to standout in Hong Kong’s dynamic foodie scene. Designed with careful guidance to the Buddhist-vegetarian principles, the menu does not use root vegetables such as garlic and onion. Inspired by the traditions of a kaiseki meal, vegetables are sourced directly from Japan, chosen at their seasonal peak for the best flavor and quality.

Each dish is crafted in honor of the purity and essence of the ingredients, true to the philosophy of simplicity, balance, and meticulous craftmanship that NIWA upholds.

Moments of Stillness to Enhance Your Dining Experience

NIWA encourages its guests to slow down, savor the moment, and be mindful amid their busy lives. It is a space where the sensory experience of eating and tasting food becomes an act of reflection

Should you like to visit, NIWA welcomes guests to make their reservations at least two days in advance. For more information, do check out NIWA’s Instagram page.

On Feb. 6, 2025, The Beat Asia hosted our inaugural live edition of the Delish Guestlist podcast at Artifact, featuring Germaine Woon, Founder of The Foundry Asia

For the past decade, Germaine has built a thriving career, leading high-profile brands like MICHELIN, luxury hotels, and Asia’s 50 Best Bars. She has also mentored over 20 marketers, creatives, and communications professionals throughout her career.

Founded in August 2023, the Foundry represents the world's most highly acclaimed restaurants (many of them Michelin-starred), hotels, and food technology brands. Their esteemed clients include NARISAWA, Zuma Hong Kong and Phuket, Little Bao, and Mostly Harmless, among many others.

Germaine

Woon recounted how her journey in Asia’s F&B industry first began and provided insights into the challenges and setbacks they faced along the way, as well as the story behind her agency’s success.

Starting her career in hospitality and nightlife marketing, Woon transitioned into F&B, eventually founding The Foundry Asia, which represents culinary legends and top bars across nine APAC cities

Germaine shared that The Foundry’s name reflects the concept of building strong foundations through essential building blocks. This vision extends to its dynamic team of former top hospitality PR professionals and marketers, all united by their creativity and passion for food, drink, and culture.

“The Foundry is not just PR, it's not just social, or marketing. That's what I love about it,” Germaine said. She emphasized the team’s strong relationships as a key to their success, "Every person on my team is extremely strong in something, but they're also strong in every single area of PR, marketing, collaboration, and networks.”

When asked about the core message she wishes to communicate to consumers with her agency, Germaine stressed the importance of building a brand that prioritizes people, growth, and hospitality. “We always put people first. About 80% of what we do revolves around communication with our clients and customer relationships,” she explained.

Woon highlighted the importance of deliberate planning in The Foundry's creative campaign strategies. “When you create events, it's extremely important to look at the lineup. The people we choose are very deliberate. This adds depth and value for sponsors. Nowadays, events are often transient — people create, run, and dump them. We focus on the brands and long-term impact.”

Looking ahead, Woon revealed 17 events already planned for 2025 and team travels across Asia.
