Hong Kong Airlines has launched seasonal flights to Yonago and Hakodate in Japan in response to an expected travel surge this winter season.
The two-month winter service is available until February 2024, covering Lunar New Year travel peaks.
According to the airline, the inaugural flights to Yonago and Hakodate saw over 400 travelers embarking on their winter holidays to these popular Japanese destinations. To make it more convenient for travelers, a shuttle bus service has been dedicated between Yonago Kitaro Airport and Yonago City on flight operation days.
Hong Kong Airlines' launch of its first-ever seasonal service to Hakodate solidifies its position as the sole local airline offering direct flights between the two cities, further enriching the airline's diverse range of travel options.
Hong Kong Airlines rolled out its first scheduled flights to Yonago in 2016. Meanwhile, Jevey Zhang, Chairman of Hong Kong Airlines, said the inaugural flight from Hong Kong to Hakodate reached more than 90% passenger capacity, reflecting tourists' interest in exploring Hokkaido. The airline also flies three times a week to Sapporo, another popular winter travel destination among Hong Kongers.

Hong Kong is best known for its neon signages, dim sum, and of course, Disneyland. But for those who call the city home, Hong Kong is much more than that. It is an amalgamation of memories, a cacophony of sights, sounds, tastes, and noises.
Amidst the organized chaos, Christina Ko, a local writer, psychic, and wellness advocate, finds life spread throughout years’ worth of memories.
“For me, Hong Kong was about growing up eating Sunday dim sum with extended family, holding the latest ‘Old Master Q’ comic that my mom would buy to keep us kids occupied throughout the meal,” she recalled.
It was about teenage years spent roaming Causeway Bay sipping on bubble tea, playing Puzzle Bobble in smoky arcades, and learning Cantonese at “Lunch K” [lunchtime karaoke] sessions. “Back then, we knew which bars in Lan Kwai Fong didn’t check for IDs, and my best friend and I spent afternoons buying broken heart necklaces at the underground mall in Sugar Street,” Christina added.
Today, her love for the city is further underlined by the launch of her self-made oracle deck, Mali Mali Home, which is available at her spiritual space, Good Peoples.
A useful guide in life, oracle decks such as Christina’s can be used as a tool for decision-making or grounding.
“[Oracle decks] are a form of solace, a sense of direction, a trigger for creativity. You draw a card, and it gives you advice, inspiration, or maybe even a kick in the ass (that you probably needed at the time),” she shared.
Alongside creative meditation, breathwork, readings, and workshops, Good Peoples offers this tributary oracle deck to those seeking clarity via Hong Kong’s nuanced lifestyle. In fact, the name “Mali Mali” is inspired by the playful Hong Kong phrase that parallels magic’s “Abracadabra."
“The phrase itself doesn’t have a written form but is familiar when said,” Christina explained. “When I looked into it, some sources suggested that it was an adaptation or bastardization of the Buddhist chant, ‘Om Mani Padme Hum,' which we can repeat as a form of purification or connection to our inner selves.”
Consisting of 33 cards, Mali Mali Home invites locals and foreigners to explore their life paths through city scenes. From polaroid images of Hong Kong’s minibuses and milk tea, Mali Mali Home delivers energy that inspires, soothes, and invigorates. Its only irony comes from how it was birthed. “I first came up with the idea of Mali Mali Home when Hong Kong was at its lowest,” Christina admitted, recalling the pandemic and the year before. At the time, people had shuttered themselves in at home and were ultimately fearful of the future. “We were wondering if we would die of a disease we thought we’d already conquered [SARS in 2002],” she recalled.
But despite the circumstances, Christina affirmed that Mali Mali Home is a testament to hope, “Hope that a bauhinia flower on a tree could remind us to bloom, that the sight of an illegally built rooftop awning might encourage us to take a little risk, or that a plate of rice rolls would allow us to create our own bold flavors."
Since then, Mali Mali Home has inspired many among the psychic's inner circle – and is used by Christina herself during her readings for other people. A keen observer of everyday life, Christina had formerly worked as an editor for a luxury magazine.
“When you interview and write about people for as long as I have, you can’t help but be fascinated by the human psyche,” she mused. "And when you interview celebrities, you can get as little as four minutes to get to know them before you write about them – so you try to read them intuitively, from how they walk into the room to how they chew a sandwich. From there, I started getting readings for myself – astrology, Bazi, numerology, Akashic records. And then, one Sunday morning last year, after a retreat, I woke up, and [realized] I was psychic.”
Since honing her intuitive gifts – which she maintains is a gift given to all humans – Christina has learned a lesson or two.
One, that intuition entails both trust and forgiveness. “I spent so many years as the vaunted editor of a luxury magazine and held myself to such high standards that I could never allow myself to be wrong, to be out of control, or to be truly free,” she recalled. But on the day she told herself those magic words – “I forgive myself” – Christina realized she was able to access her intuition, her imagination, and her connection to the world around her.
“Intuition is never wrong, but it plays a long game. So you may think you’re wrong, that you’re a fool for believing something, but one later down the line, you will understand that your intuition was leading you somewhere you didn’t know yet.”
Christina also imparted that despite the misconception of “psychic powers," humans aren’t necessarily meant to know the future in great detail.
“Anything that we see [through oracle or tarot readings] represents the most likely reality based on all of the intentions, decisions, and circumstances of right now. And the reason that this reality is being presented to you in a reading is so that you can decide if that’s what you want. And if you don’t, you simply set your intention to change course, and it is done. Ultimately, I believe in free will, and I encourage my customers to as well,” she said.
Now, as Christina continues to grow the community of Good Peoples, she’s letting her intuition lead the way.
“I’m a one-person business and I’m also about to launch a new channeled energy healing session that works through the chakras to clear emotional blockages and physical issues,” she revealed.
“Ultimately, everything I do at Good Peoples is held together by the twin themes of wellness and creativity. So whatever comes out of 2025, it will be fresh, new, wild, and fun – because my perspective is that life and healing should be a good time," Christina concluded.

Who can resist the cuteness of pandas? In Hong Kong, giant pandas are more than just attractions – they represent a rich narrative of diplomacy, conservation, and cultural significance. These black-and-white bears have become symbols of Hong Kong’s connection to China, as well as its commitment to wildlife protection.
With recent milestones like the birth of panda twins and the arrival of new panda residents, the story of pandas in Hong Kong continues to evolve, capturing the attention and hearts of millions. Whether you’ve already seen them or are planning a visit to Ocean Park to witness them up close, you’ll want to learn more about the history of giant pandas in Hong Kong. Uncover their journey and see how they’ve thrived in this quick trip down memory lane:
The story of Hong Kong’s giant pandas began in 1999, when China gifted An An and Jia Jiato mark the second anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover from British to Chinese rule. As symbols of peace and friendship, the pandas exemplified China’s practice of “panda diplomacy,” in which the gifting of pandas has long served as a goodwill gesture to strengthen ties with other nations.
An An and Jia Jia quickly become beloved residents of Ocean Park, captivating locals and tourists. Jia Jia, a female, became famous by earning a place in the Guinness World Records as the oldest panda in captivity, living to the impressive age of 38 before her passing in 2016. Meanwhile, An An, her male companion, lived until the age of 35 before passing away in 2022.
The pair’s longevity and presence in Hong Kong have helped raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and even kickstarted a local interest in panda care.
A second pair of pandas arrived in Hong Kong in 2007, Ying Ying and Le Le, further reinforcing the importance of pandas as national treasures. After living in Ocean Park for 17 years, Ying Ying made headlines on August 14, 2024, by giving birth to twin cubs. At nearly 19 years old, Ying Ying became the world’s oldest first-time panda mother, a testament to the successful breeding efforts at Ocean Park. The popular theme park is committed to panda conservation, providing a hopeful future for the vulnerable species.
In September 2024, two new pandas — An An and Ke Ke — were welcomed to Ocean Park as a gift from Beijing. These pandas bring the total number of pandas in Hong Kong to six, further boosting the city’s efforts in conservation education and sparking renewed interest in panda-related tourism. As Ocean Park continues to expand its panda program, the new arrivals are expected to play a role in attracting visitors and supporting panda preservation initiatives.
Without a doubt, giant pandas have strengthened Hong Kong’s connection to China. The cuddly and gentle creatures have become beloved icons, drawing millions of visitors to Ocean Park. With six pandas residing at the theme park, Hong Kong remains committed to breeding and conservation efforts as well as raising awareness about the importance of protecting endangered species and promoting environmental sustainability.
Visit the pandas at Ocean Park Hong Kong, 180 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong. For more information, visit their website and follow the pandas on Instagram.

Shenzhen is just a stone's throw away from Hong Kong, making it an appealing destination for both locals and visitors. This vibrant city has much to offer, whether you want to try out local food, visit a spa while enjoying affordable rates, or shop in one of the electronic markets.
However, getting from Hong Kong to Shenzhen requires some preparation. Understanding visa requirements and the various checkpoints can make your journey smoother. This guide will walk you through all the necessary steps, with special attention to the visa application process and border crossing procedures.
Visa Preparation
Before traveling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, the first step is to understand the visa requirements, as they differ based on your nationality. Citizens from certain countries may enter China without a visa for up to 15 days. Ensure you have the latest information on the visa type you want to apply for, application processes, and necessary documents. Prepare valid travel documents; check your passport and double-check your visa to avoid being stuck at the border. Don't forget to bring some local currency (CN¥) for little purchases and transportation.
144-Hour Visa-Free Transit
Citizens of 53 eligible countries can enter Shenzhen via Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and stay for up to 144 hours (6 days) before exiting Guangdong Province through one of 36 designated ports. Requirements include a passport valid for at least 3 months and a confirmed onward ticket to a third country within 144 hours.
5-Day Visa on Arrival (VOA) for Shenzhen
Most European and developed countries are eligible for a 5-day VOA in Shenzhen, including the US, UK, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, Korea, and others.
VOA is for single entry only and cannot be extended
Applicants must apply in person upon arrival at the border crossing
During the 5 days, travelers cannot leave Shenzhen for other mainland cities
Chinese Tourist Visa
Those not eligible for visa-free entry or VOA must apply for a regular China visa, either in advance from a Chinese embassy/consulate or while in Hong Kong. A multiple-entry visa is recommended if you plan to frequently travel between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Applications can be submitted at the Visa Application Service Center in Hong Kong or filed through travel agents, but the latter option may incur additional costs. Long-term non-Chinese residents of Hong Kong are eligible to apply for a five-year travel permit, making it easier to enter mainland China.
Choosing a Border Crossing Point
The border crossings between Shenzhen and Hong Kong have several convenient transportation options, each meeting different needs and preferences of travelers. For instance, Luohu is popular for its metro connection, while Huanggang is less crowded and operates 24/7. Be aware of the border hours to avoid being stranded after closing time. Stay updated on any changes to border policies or requirements, especially during peak travel times or holidays. Here’s an overview of the main modes of crossing the border:
Hong Kong MTR and Shenzhen Metro
Route: Hong Kong Downtown - Lok Ma Chau (Hong Kong MTR East Rail Line) - Futian Port - Futian Checkpoint (Shenzhen Metro Line 4) - Shenzhen Downtown
Duration: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours
The Hong Kong MTR East Rail Line provides a direct connection to the Shenzhen Metro, making it the most frequently used method for crossing the border. Travelers can choose to disembark at either Lok Ma Chau Station for Futian Port or Lo Wu Station for Luohu Port, depending on their destination in Shenzhen. This route is efficient, with seamless transfers between the two metro systems, allowing quick immigration processing.
The high-speed rail is another popular option, especially for those starting their journey near Hong Kong West Kowloon Station. With around 80 trains operating daily, this service is ideal for travelers heading to Shenzhen North or Futian stations. The journey is notably fast, taking only about 15-20 minutes to reach Shenzhen.
Ferry Services
Route: Hong Kong International Airport / HK Macau Ferry Terminal - Shekou Cruise Center / Shenzhen Airport
Duration: Approximately 1 hour
Ferry services provide an alternative route across the water, with terminals located at Hong Kong International Airport and the HK Macau Ferry Terminal. In Shenzhen, passengers can arrive at either Shekou Cruise Center or Shenzhen Airport. This option is particularly scenic and can be booked up to 30 days in advance.
Bus Services
Route:Various appointed stations in Hong Kong to designated stations in Shenzhen
Duration: About 1 to 4 hours
Buses are a flexible option, with over 150 cross-border coaches operating daily from various locations in Hong Kong, including direct services from the airport. The duration can vary significantly depending on traffic and the specific route taken.
