In celebration of Earth Day 2023, local food bank Feeding Hong Kong has launched its first Community Network program aimed at raising awareness about food waste and food insecurity issues in Hong Kong.

The Feeding Hong Kong Community Network has assembled 14 food brands, restaurants, and food delivery platforms to bridge the gap between food providers and communities in need.

Food waste is a growing problem in Hong Kong. The latest report by the Environmental Protection Department on municipal waste found that out of the 3,400 tonnes of daily local food waste generated, 68% comes from households, with the remaining 32% coming from companies and restaurants.

As the sole accredited member of the Global Food Banking Network, Feeding Hong Kong is working to launch social media campaign: “#CAN5CAN”, to encourage the local community to take action in reducing food waste.

The #CAN5CAN challenge encourages participants to donate five canned foods that are within their shelf life, and nominate two or three peers on social media to take part. A total of 16 collection points are set up where members of the public can donate quality food items.

Found of Feeding Hong Kong, Gabrille Kirstein, expressed her hopes that the Community Network Program will help the public’s awareness of existing food waste issues and encourage them to practice sustainable eating lifestyles.

In a simultaneous push to echo the theme of this year’s Earth Day celebration, “Invest in Our Planet”, Feeding Hong Kong hopes to encourage people to take small steps towards living a sustainable lifestyle across the board.
