Duan Chun Zhen Opens New Branch at Wong Chuk Hang’s THE SOUTHSIDE
Renowned Taiwanese beef noodle specialist Duan Chun Zhen is expanding its culinary legacy with its new branch opening at THE SOUTHSIDE in Wong Chuk Hang. This marks the fifth location for the Duan family, known for their soulful noodle dishes that blend Sichuan spices and flavors with the essence of Taiwan’s vibrant hawker stalls.
The story of Duan Chun Zhen begins with Duan Chun Zhen herself, who arrived in Taiwan from Sichuan in 1945 and started selling authentic Sichuan ingredients and braised delicacies from a humble bicycle stall. Today, the restaurant continues this tradition in memory of their grandma Duan, offering a range of Sichuan dishes from heirloom family recipes.
For an assortment of different savory delights, their Marinated Meat Platter (HK$98) is a must-try. This platter features a selection of savory delights like beef tripe, slow-braised beef shank, and braised egg, alongside dried tofu slices and mushrooms. Or enjoy individual cuts like their Marinated Beef Shank (HK$78) and Marinated Pork Trotter (HK$78).
Of course, we can’t talk about Duan Chun Zhen without mentioning their signature Taiwanese beef noodles. Their hearty Beef Noodles with Shank, Tripe, Tendon & Sliced Flank (HK$108) and Braised Beef Shank Noodles (HK$86) feature a broth perfected over 18 hours to achieve a rich, aromatic flavor. The beef, slow-cooked for 6 hours, is so tender it falls straight off the bone and melts in your mouth. Customers get to choose between two types of noodles – thin noodles or wider, chewy handmade noodles, both perfect for soaking up their delicious house soup, making every bite a burst of flavor!
Their Rich Chicken Broth Noodles with Drumstick is another standout. During the creation of the broth, an entire chicken is simmered for 6-8 hours at high heat in ginger, rice wine, and spices. Their Slow-cooked Chicken Leg Dry Noodles with Sichuan Chili Sauce (HK$88) is the dry noodle option with a fragrant, Sichuan numbing spice that packs a punch.
Meanwhile, Duan Chen Zhen also offer smaller appetizers with medicinal properties such as the Pork Intestine Thin Noodles and the morish Spicy Duck Blood Cellophane Noodles.
You definitely don’t want to miss out on the desserts! Indulge in traditional Taiwanese delights like Mini Glutinous Rice Balls with Ginger Sauce and Tofu Pudding (HK$30). For something seasonal, try the Sweet Black Sesame Soup (HK$35). And if you’re a fan of taro, you’re in for a treat with options like Coconut Milk, Black Sugar Boba, Purple Sweet Potato Paste, Taro Paste and Taro Balls (HK$48), or the classic Taro Paste, Taro Balls, and Red Bean Soup (HK$30).
