Family Weekend Activities Around the Metro and Beyond

Super ParkPhoto by Super Park PH

You know what they say, a family that has fun on the weekends together, stays together. Okay, maybe that’s not exactly how the saying goes but it’s true that spending quality time together creates a sense of camaraderie and has several beneficial effects for both adults and children, increasing everyone's overall well-being.

Looking for new bonding activities with the fam or do you simply want to jazz up your rest days? Whether it’s a long or regular weekend, we’ve rounded up some activities you can try together to make the most out of your weekly breakers.

Take a Historic Tour

If you don’t know already, Manila is a tourist mecca brimming with eye-catching attractions, massive shopping malls, and culinary hotspots. There’s just so much to see and do in this bustling city that people sometimes forget that amidst the modern skyscrapers and shopping district still exists the 450-year-old walled-city upon which this modern city was built.

Go on a walking tour around Intramuros, Manila’s oldest district, where Hispanic influences still thrive as reflected on its cobbled streets and ancient landmarks. Be transported back in time as you and your family explore the old city walls and visit popular destinations such as Fort Santiago, Casa Manila, and the Manila Cathedral. You can book a walking tour package or DIY your way through this exquisite district.

Entrance fees to each site is currently priced at P75 (adults) and P50 (Students/Children/Seniors). For the complete details of other attraction fees, available payment methods, and operation hours, click here.

Get Lost in a Museum

Some people spend their entire lives in one place and still feel like a tourist. Nothing bad about that. Only means there are more chances for you to explore and get to know your home city.

And what better way to do that than immersing yourselves in a museum? If you’re looking to know more about the country’s rich history, and its political and cultural figures, the National Museum of Natural History offers that and more. Housing anthropological, archaeological, and visual arts collections, it’s easy to lose track of time as you immerse yourself in the stories of each display.

P.S. Admission is FREE!

Only an hour or two drive away, Tagaytay is one of the more popular day-trip destinations due to its slightly cooler climate and scenic views. Plan a picnic overlooking the Taal Lake at Picnic Grove; go on a ride or two at Sky Ranch Tagaytay amusement park; or treat the whole family to a luxurious weekend stay at TagaytayHighland’s ski resort-inspired cabins.

Try Glamping!

Can’t decide between outdoor and indoor activities? Why not book a glamping getaway and do both? Glamping combines the words “glamorous” and “camping” and describes an outdoor getaway that includes amenities one would usually find in a full-service hotel or resort. Families looking for a relaxing vacation while also expecting to get in touch with nature are sure to get the best of both worlds while glamping.

There are several glamping sites near the metro, specifically in the provinces of Cavite, Laguna Batangas, Rizal, and Zambales. One of which is The Park Silang, a resort that redefines glamping with their state-of-the-art tents and private jacuzzi pools. Nestled in a secluded area with open natural spaces, it provides the perfect calming environment to unplug and recharge. The site is located between Tagaytay and Laguna, making it only an hour away from the metro and close to other attractions for families to check out.

Oh, and did we mention they are also pet-friendly? Now, bringing your fur babies along sounds like a plan!

Glamping tents start at P8,525 per night with Standard Rooms at P2,100.

It’s also a unique bonding opportunity that allows everyone to spend quality time together from measuring ingredients to decorating desserts.

You can totally DIY at home! But if you’re looking to make it an experience, Bakebe offers co-baking spaces and lessons through their innovative app for as low as P688. Tools and ingredients will be provided and all you need to do is bring the whole fam, get on the app, and bake your way to amazing treats!

Lagen Reimagined: New Chapter in Filipino Luxury and Cultural Storytelling

The Boat House1Photo by Lagen reimagined

If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping to a private island where nature, heritage, and design combine as one, Lagen Island in Palawan is about to make that dream even more extraordinary. This September 2025, El Nido Resorts will unveil Lagen Reimagined, a sweeping transformation of its beloved sanctuary in Bacuit Bay, now reborn as a 42-keyretreat that honors Filipino craftsmanship and quiet luxury.

Water Villa

Not just aesthetic, the redesign is even a cultural narrative. Each Forest Room and Water Villa is a tribute to indigenous artistry, featuring hand-carved wood, ceramic beadwork, and woven textiles created by artisans from across the archipelago. From the Batak tribe’s Giyangganan patterns to the motifs of the Tagbanua, Tausug, and Maranao peoples, every detail tells a story.

Guests arrive through a hall inspired by the paraw sailing boat, and step into spaces that blend contemporary elegance with deep cultural roots. The villas feature sunken lounges and balconies that frame limestone cliffs and turquoise waters, while interiors showcase fine woodwork and indigenous weaves curated by collaborators like NiñoFranco, Artisano Kabalan, and Create Industrial Corp.

Beyond the rooms, Lagen’s transformation includes a Dive Centre, Marine & Biodiversity Conservation Center, and a two-level wellness sanctuary with a spa garden, yoga studio, and healing pool. It’s a holistic experience designed to connect guests with nature and heritage.

Creative Director Paloma Urquijo Zobel de Ayala describes the new Lagen as “rooted in authenticity,” where every surface is an opportunity to celebrate Filipino design. The project is a collaboration between WATG, Wimberly Interiors Studio, Henning Larsen, and Ayala Land Hospitality’s creative team.

Seda BGC Might Just Be the City Staycation for Literally Everyone

Seda BGC

Bonifacio Global City (BGC) is Metro Manila’s hustle culture defined: a business district housing global corporations, a luxury shopping destination, and a foodie paradise with hidden F&B gems.

Here you’ll find people jogging at the crack of dawn before having their breakfast and changing into their corporate attire as they head into their morning meetings. The streets feel alive with possibility, and in the middle of it all sits Seda BGC — a hotel that seems to mirror BGC’s versatility.

The Beat Asia got to stay there for the weekend, trying out their Club Room to see if it could truly keep up with our varying vibes: from corporate girlie to brunch-hungry Tita to full-blown party mode.

Spoiler alert: Seda BGC delivered, with bonus points for making us feel at home while still serving a little luxury.

Seda BGC
Photo from Website/Seda BGC

From the moment we stepped into the lobby, there was a comforting familiarity in the way the staff greeted us. Nothing stiff or scripted, just warm, grounded hospitality that felt instinctive. And in a city that’s all about curated experiences and glossy appearances, Seda BGC manages to keep things real while still maintaining “premium” aura.

It’s also a location that’s both strategic and lifestyle-oriented. Whether you’re off to a conference, meeting friends for drinks, or planning to shop until you drop, everything is just a few minutes away — whether via walk or short Grab ride (while praying to the traffic gods that they will have mercy on your schedule.) Still, there’s something oddly satisfying about walking back to your hotel after a night out and realizing your room is just around the corner, a.k.a sleep can be had in just minutes.

You get the sense that the hotel wasn’t just built to look good, but that it was built with intention. From their prime location to the layout of the hotel to the tiniest details, such as the placement of charging ports and cozy seating nooks, everything makes sense without trying too hard to please.

Room with a View (and a Lounge)

We were treated to a 30-square-meter Club Room, which gave us access to the Club Lounge — an elevated perk that we took advantage of.

The room itself was sleek and modern, with warm wood tones, neutral hues, soft lighting, and a multi-purpose table where we toggled between diving deep into our hustle era and giving in to our midnight snacking tendencies. Plus, the chaise lounge by the window? Perfect for eyeing traffic or sipping coffee while pretending to be in a K-Drama.

Seda BGC
Club Room | Photo from Website/Seda BGC

Amenities were  the standard provisions of a four-star hotel (WiFi, kettle, mini bar, in-room safe, and international TV channels), but it was the vibe that stood out. It didn’t feel sterile or over-designed, just the right amount of comfort and convenience. There were cloud-like pillows that perfectly suited your head, matched with an equally soft duvet that hugged your entire body — guaranteeing that you’ll fall asleep within minutes.

It’s the tiny details, honestly: blackout curtains, bedside lighting that was bright enough for reading but warm enough not to interrupt your wind-down, refillable shower toiletries instead of single-use bottles, a spacious shower with good water pressure, a sink wide enough to hold your skincare and makeup without having to stack them like a Jenga masterpiece, and a concierge service that almost immediately picks up your call to address your needs.

Seda BGC Club Lounge

Seda BGC
Club Lounge | Photo from Website/Seda BGC

Then there’s the Club Lounge. Open to guests staying in Club Rooms, this quiet space offered breakfast (same buffet as Misto minus the live stations), afternoon tea, and cocktails in the evening. The views and drinks were fantastic. But the true perk was finding a quiet place in the ultra-busy city.

Even though the hotel sits right in the middle of BGC’s buzz, the lounge offered a respite from all the hustle and bustle. Whether you just want some teatime alone while recovering from a late-night out or doing a quick Zoom call, the room was exactly what you needed while ensuring you’re not disconnected from the action.

A Buffet Deserving of a Slow Morning

We’ll say it now: the breakfast buffet at Seda BGC’s Misto Restaurant is worth waking up for. None of the “meh” filler stuff that makes you do two more laps before even filling up a single plate. The buffet does include classics (hello, good ol’ fashioned bacon and hash browns), but it also features a noodle soup station (which includes Laksa!), an egg station, bread, salad, and cheese station, as well as Filipino favorites: Taho, Danggit, Champorado, and Lugaw.

Despite being a hotel breakfast, the vibe was surprisingly laid-back. Chairs were so comfortable that they encouraged lingering — the kind of breakfast that rolls into brunch, especially after a night out. The noodle soup station was our surprise favorite; nothing sobers you up quite like a hot bowl of beef broth with noodles and plenty of greens.

Pro tip: You can also opt to get your breakfast at the Club Lounge. Same offerings, shorter lines, less chaos, and stunning skyline views. Perfect for that quick mental gratitude list or just a short moment of reflection before you start tackling your day’s to-do list.

We also noticed how quietly efficient the service was. Even with a decent crowd, tables were cleared quickly, new dishes came out fresh, and coffee refills were offered generously and almost immediately. It’s the kind of service that makes you feel well taken care of without being hovered over.

Side note: Taho should be a requirement in every hotel’s breakfast buffet moving forward. It’s comforting, nostalgic, and frankly, it just completes a Filipino breakfast experience.

Straight Up Nights and Cozy Amenities

Seda isn’t just a place to crash, however. It’s designed so you don’t have to leave if you don’t want to. Straight Up, their rooftop bar, is a must-visit even if you’re not checked in. The ambiance is child but elevated (pun intended), with a view that pairs perfectly with their curated cocktails.

Though the pool was closed for renovation during our stay (set to reopen by the end of August 2025), the hotel still offered solid staycation alternatives. The gym was well-equipped and clean, and we appreciated the option for in-room massage services — a small detail, but a huge plus for those who want to decompress without stepping out.

Also, this cannot be overstated: they have parking. In BGC. For free. If you know, you know.

All in all, the on-site amenities hit that sweet spot between convenience and quality. Need a breather from your meetings? Book a massage. Want to sweat out last night’s negronis? The gym has you covered. Need a low-stakes hangout spot before bed? The Club Lounge is quiet and comfortable.

A Hotel for All Moods

What makes Seda BGC stand out isn’t one single wow factor, but how effortlessly it adapts to your needs. Families, business travelers, couples, and even your typical barkada will all find something that clicks here. It’s one of those well-curated hotels where you feel just as comfortable in your casual fit as you would dressed to the nines.

You could spend the day in meetings and come back for a quick workout before dinner. Or maybe take the kids to the Mind Museum and High Street for shopping before a swim and an in-room massage. Maybe you danced all night at Xylo and now all you want is taho, strong coffee, and silence. Seda gets it. It’s ideal for in-betweeners; those who want a little bit of everything without the commitment to either. Want to have drinks at Somewhere Quiet, shop at Nitori in Mitsukoshi, and still get eight hours of sleep? Seda makes it possible.

You can dip in and out of the BGC lifestyle without burnout.

There’s a hospitable genius to its flexibility. It doesn’t try too hard to be trendy or too minimalist to the point of being clinical. Instead, it sticks to what works: good service, cozy spaces, and thoughtful offerings. Ultimately, it’s the consistency that wins you over, as we’ve also tried staying at Seda Manila Bay and had an equally wonderful experience. You know what to expect each time you visit a Seda hotel: a clean room, good service, solid sleep, and a comforting breakfast. It’s the hotel equivalent of your favorite barista knowing your coffee order before you say it.

Would we stay again? Absolutely. Whether you’re here for business, leisure, or both, Seda BGC proves that you can be in the middle of the chaos and still find your own little pocket of calm. It’s the kind of stay where you end up mentally planning your next staycation there soon after you check out, and that’s the ultimate sign you had a good stay.

Book your stay here, or email them at [email protected] or call them at +63279458888. For more updates, information, and exclusive offers, visit their website and follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Location: Seda BGC, 30th Street corner 11th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, Metro Manila 1634

Commuters and cashless payment enthusiasts, rejoice!

Visa contactless payments are now live at MRT-3 stations, giving over 350,000 daily commuters a faster and more secure way to pay—no more fumbling through your pockets for cash or queuing long lines for tickets!

Since its start on July 25, 2025, passengers can simply tap their Visa credit, debit, or prepaid card, or any Visa-enabled mobile device, directly at the turnstiles. This new feature is part of Visa’s continued support for open-loop transit systems in the Philippines, in partnership with GCash and the Department of Transportation.

“We’re proud to bring Visa contactless payments to MRT-3 and help modernize everyday commuting for millions of Filipinos,” said Jeff Navarro, Country Manager for Visa Philippines. “This marks a significant step in building a more connected, cashless future for public transport in the Philippines. Through our partnership with the Department of Transportation and GCash, we’re enabling faster, safer, and more seamless journeys for commuters across Metro Manila.”

This move seeks to improve commuting experiences for more than 350,000 Filipinos who take the rail line every day. It’s a step forward in modernizing public transport and improving everyday commutes—one tap at a time.

Our Stay at Quest Plus Conference Center Clark

A week before our stay at Quest Plus Conference Center Clark, the hotel made check-in seamless with a smooth pre-registration process. We received a link that let us generate a QR code for the Express Check-In /Check-Out machines in the lobby — super convenient, too!

Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, the machines were out of service (tough luck!). Still, the check-in process was as quick and easy, thanks to the friendly and accommodating staff who stepped in right away and made us feel at home.

Another thing to mention was Quest Plus Conference Clark’s incredible hospitality and service. A standout is their free shuttle service to different places close to the hotel — including a service to and from their parking spaces, even if it was just close to the hotel lobby!

We stayed in a Deluxe Room, which welcomed us with cozy and charming interiors that immediately felt inviting. The 22 sqm room didn’t feel too tight, especially with the large rooms that opened to views of the swimming pool and let in a soft stream of natural light in the room. The windows also had wood sliding shutters that perfectly blocked out sunlight and gave a sense of privacy and security.

The deluxe room with two single beds.

At the center of the room was a plush, queen-sized bed that’s complemented by a comfy sofa bed on the side — perfect for lounging, especially if you’re the type who avoids sitting on the bed in “outside clothes.” The bathroom was aptly sized with all the essentials laid out. We did wish it had a bidet, but for a one-night stay, it was more than enough.

Across the bed is a small workspace, ideal for catching up on emails or last-minute meetings if you’re on a business trip. The wardrobe also had enough space to hang your outfits, with a little bit of space to spare for other things.

Quest Plus Conference Center Clark’s Amenities and Facilities

Quest Hotels and Resorts is known for their curated experiences and little pleasures that fuel “Your Quest For Life.” At Quest Plus Clark, that philosophy comes to life through their warm, inviting spaces that balance comfort and functionality with ease.

And of course, it won’t be a hotel stay well-spent if you don’t try at least some of their amenities!

We took a quick stroll around the hotel to explore the amenities before trying them out ourselves. From our room, we spotted the pool area — and to our surprise (and delight), it had foam machines running every few minutes during the day. Swimming suddenly looked less like an Olympic sport and more like a fun, mini party for kids and kids-at-heart.

We did stop by for a short swim at night, and it was still a great experience even without the foam machines. One side of the pool had a volleyball net and some rubber balls, where people could play while wading in the water. The pool wasn’t that deep either, with the kids’ pool going as deep as 2 feet, and the adults’ pool going for about 5 feet.

People could also enjoy some food and drinks by the poolside too, which is great if you’re only there for the vibes and a quick yap session with your friends.

Next stop: the Equinox Fitness Center, located on the ground floor. And honestly? It was enormous for a hotel gym. Equipped with top-of-the-line gear, it had everything from barbell zones and free weights to a solid cardio section and machines for resistance and functional training. There’s even a private studio space for stretching, yoga, pilates — everything.

And if you’re someone who has to get a workout even while on staycation (a.k.a. us), this gym is chef’s kiss. Truly the best we’ve seen in a local hotel.

Quest Plus Clark is conveniently found right across the iconic Mimosa Plus Golf Course, home to two 18-hole courses designed for both seasoned players and casual golfers alike. The destination was hailed as the “Philippines’ Best Golf Course” in the 2024 World Golf Awards — while Quest Plus Clark also bagged the title of “Philippines’ Best Golf Hotel” in the same list.

To our dismay, we didn’t get the chance to visit the course this time, but that just gives us more reasons to come back!

In-Room Dining and the Breakfast Buffet at Mequeni Live

A hotel stay is never complete without sampling their in-house food and beverage offerings. For us, we started off with their In-Room Dining because what’s better than poolside lounging followed by food in bed, right?

Fresh from our dip in the pool, we decided to go for a treat. Scanning the menu, the 6oz Angus Beef Burger and Pepperoni and Parmesan Pizza instantly caught our attention. With just one quick phone call, our cravings were on their way.

In about 20 to 30 minutes, our food arrived — warm and incredibly appetizing. It’s the kind of comfort meal that definitely hits different when you’re cozied up in a bathrobe in a warmly lit room.

The serving size was perfect for two people, with the Angus beef burger cooked to medium well perfection and a side of Fries for a crunch. The Pepperoni and Parmesan Pizza was seasoned well, too.

In short, we loved it. The flavors were right on the money, and the convenience of it all was great. That said, we do wish the In-Room Dining Menu offered a bit more variety. Including some of the hotel’s signature dishes would be a great touch, giving guests the chance to experience the best of Quest Plus’ F&B offerings without having to leave the comfort of their room.

The next morning, it was time to try out the Breakfast Buffet at Mequeni Live, Quest Plus Clark’s in-house all-day buffet. Just by the entrance, Mequeni Live had a guide that detailed their slow and peak hours to give diners a tip on when to drop by.

After a quick workout at the Equinox Fitness Center, we headed straight to the buffet — rolling in just before 9:30 AM — and found the restaurant still busy with diners. Inside, the space was glowing with warm yellow lighting, accented by the inviting shades of brown, beige, and white. The interiors were modern and sleek, giving the feel of understated elegance that made breakfast a little more elevated than your usual one.

The layout was interesting too: we were greeted first by the dessert and sweets section (which included a Filipino kakanin section!), while the rest of the buffet stations were set on a slightly elevated floor. Despite this tiered setup, the flow was still easy to navigate through and was without the awkward shuffling.

The Omelet / Eggs station is one of the stations at Mequeni Live, offering different ways to cook your eggs and other breakfast viands.

The spread itself was generous and mouth-watering, with classic Western options like bacon, eggs, sausages, and hashbrowns, alongside Filipino favorites like longganisa, tuyo, corned beef, and more. There were also some Chinese comfort foods, a noodle station, soup station, and more — there was something for every kind of breakfast person.

Of course, we didn’t miss out on trying out famous Kapampangan viands such as the Chorizo and Chicken Tocino. Our take? We wish the Chicken Tocino had a bit more flavor and could have been cooked a bit more, though that just might be our preference talking.

The breakfast was absolutely filling, and if we had some more space in our stomachs, we could have come back for seconds.

Check Out Thoughts

Now for the final verdict: would we choose to stay at Quest Plus Conference Center Clark again? 10s across the board, yes!

Quest Plus Conference Center Clark is a must-visit whenever you’re at Clark; it’s the perfect place for a fun staycation if you’re looking to take a break from Metro Manila. From the charmingly decorated rooms, the amazing amenities, and the incredibly satisfying food at the In-Room Dining and at Mequeni Live, it hit all our must-haves for our stay.

Beyond the hotel’s comfort and service, Quest Plus Clark’s thoughtful sustainability efforts also deserve a shout-out. For one thing, the hotel has phased out the use of single-use plastics, opting for more eco-conscious alternatives such as providing a glass pitcher in every room and water refilling stations on every floor.

That was something we really appreciated during our stay at Quest Plus Conference Center Clark, and it is one thing hotels could also do to be more mindful of our environmental impact.

If you’re looking for an amazing stay at Clark, then Quest Plus Conference Clark is the hotel you should stay in.

Students Get 50% Discount on PH Trains Through Established Student Lanes

MRTPhoto by The Department of Transportation/Facebook

Some good news for student commuters! You can now get a half-price fare discount at MRT-3 and LRT-2’s dedicated student lanes.

Last month, it was announced that the student fare discount across all railways will be raised from 20% to 50%, and will be effective until 2028. However, it’s only available for single-journey tickets, so students are still required to line up at the booths to claim the fare reduction.

Following the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., student laneswill now be in place at MRT-3 and LRT-2 line stations to eliminate queuing and avoid inconveniencing passengers.

We shouldn’t make verification difficult for student discounts, so the flow of passengers will be more efficient and students won’t be late for school),” said Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.

On the other hand, the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), which operates the LRT-1 line, will be implementing queuing systems instead to manage passenger flow and minimize delays for students availing the fare reduction.

Hopefully, this new queuing system will make commuting easier for students and improve overall efficiency across all railway stations in Metro Manila.

Here’s Why the Philippines is Becoming a Halal-Friendly Destination

20250703 Salaam 2025Photo by Department of Tourism Philippines/Facebook

The Philippines is no longer treating halaltravel as a niche — and the recently concluded Salaam 2025 Halal Travel and Trade Expo proved just that.

According to the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2025, the country is “steadily positioning itself as a Muslim-friendly destination by strengthening its capacity to welcome Muslim travelers.” These efforts include expanding access to Halal-certified food, integrating Muslim-friendly features in key tourist sites, and launching nationwide initiatives to improve hospitality — from halal accommodations to cultural awareness to cater to the needs of Muslim visitors.

Held at the Quantum Skyview, Upper Ground B of the Gateway Mall 2 in Quezon City, the Salaam Expo brought together tourism boards, Muslim and halal product providers, health practitioners, hospitality groups, and cultural organizations from across the Philippines.

More than a showcase of goods and services, the expo was a collective statement that affirms the Philippines’ readiness to welcome more Muslim brothers and sisters from around the world. The event highlighted the collaboration between the public and private sectors in creating more inclusive, halal-friendly Philippine tourist destinations.

But what exactly does “halal” mean, and why does it matter in tourism?

Often associated with Islamic dietary laws, the term “halal” is used beyond food. It refers to what is permissible or lawful in Islam, encompassing ethics, lifestyle, business practices, and daily routines.

In travel, “halal” doesn’t just mean what’s on the menu; it also includes access to prayer spaces, modest accommodations, respectful service, and experiences that align with one’s faith. While halal travel is rooted in Islamic values, it isn’t exclusive to Muslim travelers — it’s a thoughtful way of traveling that can be enjoyed and appreciated by anyone, regardless of their religion.

Held from June 27 to 29, 2025, the three-day expo was a celebration of Filipino Muslim identity, respect, and inclusivity, bringing together halal brands and regional leaders to spotlight their goods and services.

Across the Quantum Skyview event floor, halal-certified brands, Muslim-friendly destinations, cultural performances, and meaningful conversations came together to create a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the future of halal travel in the country.

Most of the exhibitors were from the food industry, a nod to the Department of Tourism’s efforts to position the Philippines as a top culinary tourism destination. Highlights include the province of Sultan Kudarat, one of the leading coffeeproducers in the country, Fatima’s Halal Restaurant, the first Filipino halal-certified restaurant in Manila, Mama Sita’s, and Maggi.

Also present were key players like the Islamic Da’wah Council of the Philippines, Inc., as well as hospitality giants Megaworld Hotels & Resorts, Robinsons Hotels & Resorts, and Dusit Hotels & Resorts — each one showcasing their commitment to Muslim-friendly service and halal-friendly offerings.

Beyond the booths, products, and promotions, Salaam 2025 was ultimately about fostering trust, respect, cultural understanding, and a more inclusive future. Throughout the three-day affair, numerous known personalities, such as Samira Gutoc and Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, graced the event and shared words that left a lasting impression on the attendees.

During the closing ceremony, Department of Tourism Undersecretaries Maria Rica C. Bueno and Myra Paz Valderrosa Abubakar, along with Marites Maguindra, Director of the Ministry of Trade, Investments, and Tourism of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), offered reflections on their shared vision for the future of halal tourism in the Philippines.

“Today, we reaffirm that Muslim-friendly tourism is not a niche; it is an essential part of a more sustainable, respectful, and people-centered tourism industry,” shared Usec. Bueno during her opening remarks. “We have seen that Muslim-friendly tourism is already thriving in many corners of our country, ready to be discovered, appreciated, and supported.”

She went on to detail key initiatives led by Usec. Abubakar under the Department of Tourism, including capacity building and recognition programs for Muslim-friendly establishments, halal culinary development, and strategic collaborations with certifying bodies and tourism stakeholders.

She also highlighted that the Philippines will be hosting the ASEAN 2026, with plans to conduct a series of trainings for tour guides and frontline tourism workers in the host destinations, to ensure a deeper understanding of Muslim travelers.

Marites Maguindra, the Director of the Ministry of Trade, Investments, and Tourism of the BARMM, shared how moved she felt by the growing national talks around halal and the strong turnout of exhibitors at the expo, saying that “Halal is truly for everyone.”

She strongly emphasized that while the BARMM has long led halal efforts in the country, the goal has never been to keep it regional.

“We are not alone [as the BARMM region] when it comes to talking on halal,” she said. “But we always ensure that the Halal program doesn’t just speak for the region but will truly encompass the interests of the entire Philippines. Because this is very important to Muslims inside and outside the BARMM, but also for the economy of the Philippines.”

USec. Myra Paz Valderrosa Abubakar on the first day of Salaam 2025: Halal Travel and Trade Expo

Abubakar closed the affair on a hopeful and appreciative note, thanking everyone who took part in the event. “Your presence here is a resounding testament that the Philippines is more than ready to receive our Muslim travelers both locally and abroad, to give them the best that we can offer,” she said.

“The Philippines has come a long way in the realm of halal industry friendly tourism, but just as I always say, ‘Malayo pa, pero malayo na.’ Much has been done, but there is still so much to do. It is my fair belief and hope that all of you here will remain with us as we do more, win more, and achieve more in our journey in making the Philippines a premier destination for our Muslim travelers.”

Final Thoughts

As Salaam 2025 ended, it was clear that the event was more than just a regular expo — it was a turning point for Philippine tourism. It was a reminder that halal tourism isn’t just about policy, products or services, but about the people.

While the path to becoming a truly halal-friendly country is still far, the Philippines is slowly moving forward to that goal with intention. Echoing the words of USec. Abubakar, there is still so much to do and to learn, but everything is slowly coming together.

With events like Salaam 2025, the Philippines is not only opening its doors to Muslim travelers around the world but is embracing a future built on cultural understanding and respect. The Philippines is known for its warm hospitality, and initiatives like this show that the country is committed to making every traveler feel at home.
